Extra week training in July has huge impact

2173

I was concerned about a trip to Estonia after hearing Hearts struggle in their home leg against Estonian opponents last week, so news that Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps beat Flora Tallinn was welcome, although the concern was tempered as news arrived that Hearts were three goals up in the away leg.

The lesson here is that in July, one more week’s training has a huge impact on performance.

Brendan Rodgers will be happy with how training has progressed thus far, but it’s only when players put multiple 90 minutes under their belts that they are ready for competitive action. There’s not necessarily a great deal of work to do to overcome Red Imps (no offence intended), but qualifiers come thick and fast thereafter. Despite beating Slovenian champions Olimpija Ljubljana yesterday, I expect Celtic will be more motivated for Saturday’s game against Maribor.

It gets serious from now onwards.

147 mph serve by Raonic, the fastest serve of the tournament

Returned by Murray – and he wins the point!

On the basis of who was entitled to vote in the independence referendum that would probably be a fair assessment.

I wouldn’t say it’s his game plan but if Murray set out to let Raonic lead then keep pulling him back in and pipping him to sets it must be soul destroying for the Canadian,in attrition Murray is an absolute master especially with the arsenal he has in his game.

  16. A little worried of the midfield three that Brendan has used in last two games.

A big reason for some very poor performances last season and have looked more of the same in both games.

While each of them have individual talents as a collective they are mince.

The lack of service to the front players was obvious yesterday.

Brown has dig and energy but lacks creativity.

Johansen has a great engine but is indisciplined and not suited to a deeper lying role.

Bitton is good at reducing tempo and passing ball backwards or sideways.

Not one of them is good at protecting the defensive zone and all offer very little positive or creative play.

I hope Brendan is just giving everyone an equal chance to prove their worth and will be ruthless when the games begin.

The midfield in second half yesterday put in a far superior effort in second half after wholesale changes.

I’m sure if you try really hard you’ll get there
