Extra week training in July has huge impact

2173

I was concerned about a trip to Estonia after hearing Hearts struggle in their home leg against Estonian opponents last week, so news that Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps beat Flora Tallinn was welcome, although the concern was tempered as news arrived that Hearts were three goals up in the away leg.

The lesson here is that in July, one more week’s training has a huge impact on performance.

Brendan Rodgers will be happy with how training has progressed thus far, but it’s only when players put multiple 90 minutes under their belts that they are ready for competitive action. There’s not necessarily a great deal of work to do to overcome Red Imps (no offence intended), but qualifiers come thick and fast thereafter. Despite beating Slovenian champions Olimpija Ljubljana yesterday, I expect Celtic will be more motivated for Saturday’s game against Maribor.

It gets serious from now onwards.

The 1st half team out last night would do for me in qualifiers. A few weeks more game time they will be tip top!

With fresh options of Paddy Roberts Callum McGregor and Tam Rogic we have a decent enough core.

The main improvement for me was the players looked to be playing in positions they were comfortable with and carrying out instructions they understood.

They looked like men doing a man’s job.

I’m not blind to the defensive scares last night but put that down to rustiness and lack of familiarity with system.

A lot happier after watching last night.

He loved to be in the away support whether at Pittodrie, Tannadice or Inverness and regularly announced his improbable arrival for the now defunct Glasgow derby with, as mention here already, a speedy return to his duties in Milan.

Fr Renato will be missed by many a supporter and by others at all levels in the Club who benefitted from his advice, encouragement and prayers.

As the new season approaches, if you are interested, here is a summary of the changes to the Laws of the Game this season – quite a few. As an ex ref never really minded differences of opinion but an argument based on ignorance of the Laws wound me up – like huns arguing ‘same club’ !

    This season, for example ..

    # a mistimed or clumsy challenge in the penalty area preventing obvious goal scoring opportunity may only result in a yellow card and penalty rather than an automatic red card.

    # a player being treated for minor injury does not need to leave the pitch on restart

    # ball can be kicked in any direction at kick-off

Robertson was telling all and sundry that he was aiming for his rightful place on the SPFL Board, as a club of Sevco’s standing should be represented at decision making level.

It would seem that the response from the other Chairmen/CEOs was a resounding. “Aye, right”.

The statement from the club is an attempt to convince Les Gullibles that they are actually relevant.

It’s bad enough getting held up, but when your airline has another flight scheduled for the same destination after yours, well you’d think they’d move you up to that one. Was probably full up tho anyway.

  21. EMBRAMIKE –

I know what you mean about players/officials arguing about the laws of the game.

My son was playing a youth game in Edinburgh in the 90s when the opposition were awarded an indirect free-kick inside the 6-yard box after the keeper picked up a pass-back.

As the defenders formed a wall along the goal line, the opposition manager demanded that the referee force them back the full 10 yards. The ref explained that they can’t go further than the goal-line, but the guy was threatening to pull his team off the park.

My son’s team manager intervened and backed the referee up, but the guy actually claimed they must either go 10 yards to the side, or 6 yards behind the goal. It took one of his own player’s parents to talk sense into him.

The shot was blocked and cleared and he started shouting “cheats”.

    Unbelievable.

Reading my mind, but didn’t want to state the obvious ! Took me 2 years to get vocal with refs, but have fair got ripped into them over the last couple of years.

Laws of Game are only similarity between Senior listed refs (the 10% who doe the SPFL etc) and even decent amateur refs. Their ‘motivation’ is different and have to dance to the piper’s tune – or are just plain crap, despite all the assistants and observers !!

  24. EMBRAMIKE –

I also read that FIFA are seriously considering the introduction of the “penalty goal” similar to the penalty try in Rugby.

If a player other than the goalkeeper stops a net-bound shot with his hand, the referee will be able to award a goal, withoit the need to take a penalty. I have been advocating this for years.

Perfect example of some smart arse who ‘picked up’ the rules on playground with jackets for posts !

Ex pro players / managers on TV and radio are the worst – totally clueless. Even our own Lisbon Lion Jim Craig commentating on our mid week thought that the ref had blown for ‘feet being on the park’.

Actually as long as part of the foot is on the line (heels ok) then nothing wrong with a throw in with ‘feet on the park’. Surprised me too during ref classes!

The ball would need to have passed beyond the goalkeeper first,or the rule might be subject to “interpretation”

Similar to the pass back rule.

Remember Steve Fulton tackling a hun outside the area, only for the ball to trickle back to the keeper? That kind of interpretation.
