Eye’s oversight

596

You could be forgiven for losing track of Scottish football issues of governance, accountability and oversight, there are so many fronts to engage on. On the heels of CQN approaching Private Eye on the subject of Resolution 12 (granting of licences to participate in Uefa competitions), the newspaper today wrote about the recent Offshore Game Report on the SFA’s dealings with oldco Rangers’ tax affairs, the SPL Commission into Rangers, as well as the awarding of Uefa licences in 2011.

This is what functioning oversight looks like. Organisations with a platform to analyse those in power do so. In the Scottish goldfish bowl, we import oversight from London, which makes accountability difficult and, ultimately, makes governance ineffective.

No review of the Nimmo Smith Commission will take place until the Supreme Court has had their say, but any hopes of accountability you have at that point will rest in interest in the matter from London. We simply don’t have the structures in place here.

A quarter of the teams in the last 16 are from these islands. Amazing.

Wonder how the corrupt SFA are feeling? 5th rate at home and qualification to a major tournament as far away now as its been in the last 20 years.

Agree with mentions of Buffon,a genuine class act.Great to see.

    I’ve got to say again:

    Marin is a genius.

I think he brings the wee bhoy fitba’ fan out of me.I was as on edge counting down the clock after the goal as I get watching Celtic.I so,so,so wanted Ireland to do it and mostly for Martin. He yields so much joy from being unyielding.I love how he makes me feel warching fitba’.

I think we all expected Italy to progress further than Ireland but we now know that both have a hard task in next round

  4. Thanks for the kind words regarding my dad.

It’s been a good few years since he died but my feelings for Italy seem to get stronger as I get older.

Funny thing is as a kid I would wind my dad up and support Scotland or Britain in sports against Italy

  5. I’m a proud Scot but at the end, I was wiping away a tear or two for my second country.

    Brilliant Martin and brilliant Ireland.

  6. OK I’m back, didn’t really go for a walk in the end, just went into the kitchen & peeked through the crack in the door. I know we will likely to be hammered Sunday but tonight was our Cup Final & we will celebrate it. The Magners is in the Freezer, buzzing.

  7. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bourne, a possible double celebration for us tonight, Ireland winning and sevco fighting again

Just saw James McLean’s celebrations after the game and then in his interview telling how prooud he is of his country .

To quote Kevin Rowland from the Dexy’s track , National Pride, ‘ my national pride is a personal pride where I came from,Ireland back where I came from’

As aside , Kevin was born in England but has always been proud of his Irish roots.

Congratulations Ireland and well done MON and RK. No reason why we can’t achieve the same outcome against France.

With reference to an earlier post, BOYINABUBBLE @ 8:54 PM, I have attended previous Digital Meetup events. All have been very informative and well worth a visit.

I’ve never been to a CQN night out but I think that would be the night to end them all. Thought the prematch stuff looked magnificent with the colours of the two flags and great national anthems.

Not very confident for the Spain game , they seem to have Italy’s measure these days and cope better with Italy’s defensive style and keep their composure

  16. Thinking of what might have been if we (Celtic) had shown the guts of the Irish team in our games against Maribor and Malmo.

Well done Martin, Roy, (2) Steves and all the squad – compulsive viewing!

Scotland’s nose is pressed up against the window-pane, as all the other nations of the British Isles mix with the elite.

We all know about ‘corruption’ with the Scottish game, to this we must also add the words ‘total incompetence.

Apart from the ‘comical’ Tartan Army, no one in Scotland ‘gives a toss’ about the national team – it is now an irrelevance and an embarrassment.

Great result for ya bud. Brilliant. You’ll not get hammered mate. Tough game yes, but the fighting Irish will give it everything.

    Good luck…….

  18. Congrats Ireland, buzzing, big time.

Italy got what they deserved, thought the comments were spot on.

Why play dirty, unattractive football when you have already won the group?

Robbie Brady, Houllihan and Duffy would be great signings, would also take James Maclean.
