Eye’s oversight

596

You could be forgiven for losing track of Scottish football issues of governance, accountability and oversight, there are so many fronts to engage on. On the heels of CQN approaching Private Eye on the subject of Resolution 12 (granting of licences to participate in Uefa competitions), the newspaper today wrote about the recent Offshore Game Report on the SFA’s dealings with oldco Rangers’ tax affairs, the SPL Commission into Rangers, as well as the awarding of Uefa licences in 2011.

This is what functioning oversight looks like. Organisations with a platform to analyse those in power do so. In the Scottish goldfish bowl, we import oversight from London, which makes accountability difficult and, ultimately, makes governance ineffective.

No review of the Nimmo Smith Commission will take place until the Supreme Court has had their say, but any hopes of accountability you have at that point will rest in interest in the matter from London. We simply don’t have the structures in place here.

  1. BIG BIG DAY TOMORROW.

LET’S BE INCLUSIVE – LET’S NOT WALK AWAY FROM OUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS.

One of the lastest polls shows that 38% of SNP will vote leave – in essence they will vote for ANYTHING that furthers their beaten and discredited one-issue dogma.

We dodged a bullet by rejecting the economically illiterate case for separation from the UK – let’s do likewise with this similarly illiterate and obnoxious case that would tear us away from like-minded European nations.

Let’s embrace diversity – let’s be open-minded – let’s be internationalists..Not ‘Little Scotlander’ and ‘Little Englander’ insular bigots.

  2. TinyTim,

Martin will never be forgiven for Black Sunday.

Why did it come out on the day of the game (in the press) that he was leaving?

How were players meant to react waking up to that?

How were fans meant to react?

Can remember sitting in supporters bus and it was skelping down. Game a cert to be called off – Fir Park worst pitch in Scotland but, hey ho, on we go.

One nil up an Bellamy sprints thru and only goalie to beat and the Tim left back hauls him down – Straight Red Card, Linesman flagging the offence right in front of him, but wait, Dallas runs along and waves play on, then the heart sunk. We were still one nil up.

Shit only happens when people shit on you.

Buffon is a class act. Full stop.

Interesting to hear Graeme Souness, on his last night of punditry on TV3, in Ireland, refer to the team as ” we”.

He has been a star pundit since the the beginning.

Interesting to note that neither Irish channel acknowledged the part played by Aiden in the build up.

  7. I forgive Martin O’Neill for Light-Grey Sunday, and I was there.

After all he had just completed his fifth season against financially doped-up cheats, whom he had still skelped for the majority of that time.

And,applying the rules, given what we know now about the unregistered players, the team had already won the League that year before they had even taken to the Fir Park equivalent of Glastonbury, and that’s just taking 3 points off Deidclub for one unregistered player in one game.

Feel free to apply the same reasoning to season 2002-3.

Or have we simply moved on?

Tim left back hauls Bellamy back??? Are you kidding? It was that N.I. Hun Craigen that committed the foul.

Eh, no it wasn’t it was Stevie Hammell, spoke to him and Steven Pearson in Traders in the Barras a few years later. He said he was stunned at the decision, thought he was off. But, there ye go.

  9. Mats Nilloc,

depending on what poll you look at the leave vote is between 41% and 49%,

so if only 38% of SNP voters are voting to leave then I imagine its a lower

%age than voters that voted for other parties, does that make all those other voters bigots as well

  10. I just assumed that in the Brexit/Bremain Referendum, that the same rules applied.

Surely, we must be voting to bring democracy closer to Scots voters, to not share our sovereignty with foreign countries and to punish those Scottish politicians that shared platforms with those dirty Tories and pushed Project Fear.

Or does that not apply now? :-)

I’m sure drug cheat Carl Lewis has some harsh words for his coach after losing ;o)

  13. MON has the highest winning average of any manager ever of the now gone ‘Old Firm’ at 75.53%. This was achieved despite much of the toxicity at Ibrox.

Walter Smith stands at 65.52% & 62.86%. Graeme Souness stands at 64.2%%. Alex McLeish is at 65.96%. Advocatt is at 67.53%, for example.

Nobody’s perfect but he clearly put a team on the field that contributed to the crash at Ibrox. In my view.

  18. I have been telly impressed by Hendrick. He is big and strong and looks totally at home at this level. If he continues to work hard at his game he will be a great midfielder. He looks exactly the type of player Celtic need to add to the team. As for the poster who gave the disparaging appraisal of James McClean, I have to say that I would have to agree. I have watched James on roughly 20 or 12 occasions for Sunderland, West Brom and Ireland and I have not been impressed. He is not Celtic class. There was a lot of talk on here a couple of years ago by posters who wanted us to sign him but no thanks. I do admire his bravery in the stance he has taken in standing up for his republican convictions.

The %age figure you quote for Leave is a UK wide projection – 38% of SNP is of course a Scotland only vote – not comparing like with like.

In my opinion anyone who votes for either (EU/UK) separation is insular – and yes some of them will do so for bigoted reasons – whether they are Scottish or English or N Irish, they are ‘flag-eaters’ who would put ordinary peoples’ livelihoods at risk for their outdated and navel-gazing mantra.
