Eye’s oversight

596

You could be forgiven for losing track of Scottish football issues of governance, accountability and oversight, there are so many fronts to engage on. On the heels of CQN approaching Private Eye on the subject of Resolution 12 (granting of licences to participate in Uefa competitions), the newspaper today wrote about the recent Offshore Game Report on the SFA’s dealings with oldco Rangers’ tax affairs, the SPL Commission into Rangers, as well as the awarding of Uefa licences in 2011.

This is what functioning oversight looks like. Organisations with a platform to analyse those in power do so. In the Scottish goldfish bowl, we import oversight from London, which makes accountability difficult and, ultimately, makes governance ineffective.

No review of the Nimmo Smith Commission will take place until the Supreme Court has had their say, but any hopes of accountability you have at that point will rest in interest in the matter from London. We simply don’t have the structures in place here.

    Agreed.

However, it`s a dying concept imho.

Too many nationalists with diametrically opposing views.

    A house irreparably divided.

Correct, apply the rules, as with Dundee United this season, and he did win the five. Not sure Martin himself sees it this way, but it’s not up to him!

    Hi everyone,

I’m a bit of a longterm lurker and never normally post anything here but I thought some of you guys might be interested in coming along to an event I’m running. It’s an event looking at sport and digital. Completely free to attend and we’ve got a couple of interesting speakers from Fanduel and QTV Sports. We might have a couple of other speakers in addition to this, so it should be a good evening. Everyone is welcome! We’ll be in the basement of Blackfriars from 18:30 next Thursday. Good we excuse for a beer to talk sport and digital…we’ll be finished for 8 if you’re watching the quarter final that night.

You are correct – the thing that occupies the minds of those in the seven countries of former Yugoslavia is now membership of the EU and not war.

Of course there are imperfections in a union of 500 million that stretches from the Alantic Ocean to the Russian border – however after forty years it is still work in progress – we must let our children and grandchildren finish the job.

Maybe Brendan will tell him to run it down,Celtic will give him half the earlier fee as a signing-on.

    #############

I enjoy reading your posts Mats, however I dont usually agree with too many of them and this one is falls right into that category.

Aiden was at best a bit better than average for us when he could be bothered, seen him disappear in far 2 many games to “welcome him home “.

As for him being our Ten-thirty bit of a stretch to say he Could be,its an opinion of course and mine is your bonkers mate if you think Aiden is anything like Bertie, once he finds how to tackle and make a number of telling passes in the same game, then we can talk about comparisons.

    #############.

And I would also like to thank wee Bertie for taking the time last night to present the trophy and awards to wee shades football team,he had a word of wisdom for every boy there. I never knew before hand he was going to be there , whilst we were all seated waiting for the presentation beginning, the wee mhan turned to me and said Dad is that one of the Lisbon Lions? He had spotted Bertie before I had.

Bertie has never changed, mate. He’s always been proud to be a Celtic man. Proud to have worn the shirt. Proud to have achieved so much.

I have never heard one single bad report about him in all my life,he is a total gem with the fans.

Typically,he doesn’t even realise how much he is appreciated,he thinks he owes it to us!

Legend is a big word. Bertie is all of that.

    50 Shades of Green,

i was back in Scotland a couple of weeks ago and I took my 84-year old Dad to Celtic Park for the stadium tour. It was good but the highlight was when we were in the Celtic shop and Bertie walks in, talking to everyone, tells my Dad that he knows his face and poses for photographs with us. Highlight of my day. Bertie loves our Club.

  19. Antipodean Red

” tells my dad he knows his face”.

Isn’t that a fantastic thing to say to your dear old dad!

    Wonderful story.

Just after the lions won the Cup, they came to our small village for a CSC dance.

My grandad was frail, ( mind you having fathered 14 wonderful kids, no wonder), but some of the lions went to the house to meet him. He got his best suit on and had his picture taken with them.

On my 40th, my cousin had the picture frames for me.

( my mum still talks very fondly of that night and Stevie Chalmers in particular)

I felt great, those guys are our people, they know us, not literally, but they epitomise what Celtic is. I’ve had the good fortune to spend a little time with Billy McNeill, Jim Craig and Willie Wallace, absolutely awestruck at first but they made me feel like an equal, Billy in particular, so much time and humble too. Love them

    Hope yer well S.

Off to start another day on steel city of Sheffield.

Working next door to Orgreave, scene of the miners struggles in 84.

    Housing estate now.

I find the Sheffield guys very friendly. Had to educate one or two right enough about their favouring the dark side over the hoops, but they’ve seen the error of their ways. :-)

Just as well since a few asked to adjust their hours for the England games!

The Utd v Wednesday rivalry just not as intense I find.

Odd given how long that they’ve both been in existence compared to the relatively short time of about 4 years the Celtic v The Rangers rivalry has been around.

They’re trying to get me to a game. Pick a Sheffield side. So difficult. I’ve never like Wednesday’s. Worse than Monday’s. Blue v Red?

Then again a few ex hoops in the blue.

Heads or tails really. ( Might opt for Rotherham as a compromise )

  25. ON SCOTT BROWN IN THE RANGERS STRIP.

Before signing for Hibs as a Youth ,Scott Brown played for Foulford Royals boys club.

The photo of him in the Oldco strip was taken as a team photo , as it was the team kit for Foulford Royals.

Scott Browns Mum & Dad separated when he was a young boy.

His Mum remarried a wonderful bloke from the Fotheringham clan.

Scott has an older cousin called Kevin Fotheringham.

He played for Rangers at youth team level and signed pro forms.

Scott used to go and watch Kevin play for Rangers youths , with his stepdad and Kevin’s father.

This is where the stories come from that he used to watch Rangers.

Scott didn’t go and watch many professional matches because he was always playing.

If he had a slight leaning as a boy it was towards Hibs, but he did not regard himself as a supporter of any club.

His heart now lyes at Celtic Park.

His stepdad is a Celtic supporter.

His Mum is a Celtic supporter, but first and foremost she is a Scott Brown supporter.

She , like any parent has watched her boy play football from an early age.

She has supported him at every stage.

Never ever has Scott Brown been a Rangers supporter.
