Eye’s oversight

596

You could be forgiven for losing track of Scottish football issues of governance, accountability and oversight, there are so many fronts to engage on. On the heels of CQN approaching Private Eye on the subject of Resolution 12 (granting of licences to participate in Uefa competitions), the newspaper today wrote about the recent Offshore Game Report on the SFA’s dealings with oldco Rangers’ tax affairs, the SPL Commission into Rangers, as well as the awarding of Uefa licences in 2011.

This is what functioning oversight looks like. Organisations with a platform to analyse those in power do so. In the Scottish goldfish bowl, we import oversight from London, which makes accountability difficult and, ultimately, makes governance ineffective.

No review of the Nimmo Smith Commission will take place until the Supreme Court has had their say, but any hopes of accountability you have at that point will rest in interest in the matter from London. We simply don’t have the structures in place here.

  1. Roy Keane was wrong to put down Aiden publicly, but what he said was correct.

Aiden has done more in the game than most of us supporters could ever dream off.

When you see clips of him as a youth , he had the potential to be a Ronaldo or a Messi.

But he didn’t grow as a team player that would improve at the top level of the game.

Having paid multi millions for him Spartak Moscow didn’t renew his contract .

He couldn’t get a game in a very poor Everton team.

Punted out on loan to SWFC he wasn’t deemed good enough to make their play off squad.

    He simply hasn’t progressed.

He holds onto the ball to long.

He allows the opposition to regroup and get behind the ball again .

    He slows down attacking play.

Yes he can’t do a step over , but there is rarely any end product that hurts the opposition.

He has scored against Rangers , won titles and cups at Celtic .

    Played in the CL.

He was our most exciting prospect since Paul McStay.

But let’s leave it at that.

  4. When Joey Barton made his comments about Scott Brown a week or so back, the Scottish media lapped it up and gave it maximum publicity, with not one cautionary word about an incomer “fanning the flames” or “stoking the fires”.

Here’s a prediction for you. Now that Scott Brown has finally reciprocated with his own barbed response, at least one prominent Scottish scribe will condemn the “tit-for-tat” jibes for stirring up trouble on the terraces, or words to that effect.

Mates told me about Aiden when he was 12 .

I would have loved him to kick on.

Nevertheless , within a couple of minutes of coming on last night,he did enough to provide a new threat and challenge for the Italians .

I think that`s what his role was intended to be .

When Aidan had the ball for us, he invariably had 2 markers, occasionally 3. The failure was in the tactics not to exploit the space.

The simple answer is, it won’t be dead until the Res12 guys say so. Anything written that is based on STV Grant’s article is nonsense, simply because his story is based on UEFA’s response to his questions about Res12.

It is not based on the UEFA response to the Res12 guys.

Grant either does not understand Res12 at all, or has wilfully misled people by asking UEFA about an investigation of Rangers. Res12 has nothing to do with an investigation of Rangers.

    Wait for the Res12 guys.

  13. Had to pop down town this morning for a few minutes, everyone seemed to be smiling about something, must be a good joke doing the rounds.

  14. Very well done, the boys in green last night. After their poor show v Belgium, I had my doubts. Although Italy were not at full strength, they were formidable opponents. It was good to see Hoolahan, a clever player, go from zero to hero in 2 minutes. McGeady, too, played his part. I put the TV on hold after the goal, then FForward 8 minutes later, as I thought they might run out of luck . Great viewing. So also was the earlier6 goal draw.

Ireland took 4 points against Germany in the group stages, and might have the character to upset France who cheated them last time. Good luck, anyway !

  15. It seems most of the big hitters ended up in one side of the draw which gives a great opportunity for the likes of Belgium or even Wales to get through to the final .

  16. Belgium were mugged by the Italians first day but since then have looked really good, could easily go on to win this tournament

Loved the video of Irish Fans singing a lullaby to a French baby on a crowded train, some other Irish Fan in the background starts a more raucous chant and a real Dub accent can be heard saying “Hey Hey Keep it down, we have a baby here, keep it down or I’ll box the head off ye”, said in jest it must be said..

  17. Bamboo –

The morning after Wales won their group, I stuck £10 each-way on them to win the competition. I got 66/1 which effectively gives me 33/1 against them just reaching the final.

  18. Brilliant bet, Auld Tam, They should definitely take care of Norn Iron, so just 2 games from the Final.

  19. What, no fitba tody? Not good enough. Some game last night though. The Italians, as is their way, just sat back and challenged Ireland to score. For a very long time it didn’t look like they were good enough to do so, but perseverance won out in the end.

I’m still not keen on the new format. Teams getting through after one win and two defeats doesn’t seem right somehow. And the draw for the latter stages has now turned out very uneven. Italy v Spain with the winners likely to play Germany. France and England in the same half of the draw.

We could see a surprise finalist form the other half. Croatia perhaps?

  20. I don’t know Gordon, I think we have France & then Iceland to come after that so don’t rule us out.

  21. CORKCELT,

Love your optimism! Well why not? There will be surprises.

I can’t see Iceland beating England but I can see them scoring. The English defence is so poor that Farmfoods could probably get a couple of goals.

  22. traditionalist88 on

Brilliant for Ireland last night, a totally deserved win! Not sure how the ref/linesman missed that foul on McLean but irrelevant now.

I’d take McGeady back. He has a bit of magic and plays the game the way it was intended, even though he can frustrate the life out you such as that cross straight into the keepers hands last night.

On his day hes a crowd pleaser and makes things happen. I’d trust BR to get the best out him and take the appropriate action if he was having an off day.

He’d be a great option to have in the squad, certainly an upgrade on Forrest and Mackay-Steven right away.

James McClean reminds me of Stephen Pearson a little. Lots of endeavor and intent but lacking a little on end product. Had a good game last night though and a lot to be said for a guy that can carry the ball and the whole team up the pitch in under 30 seconds

    =============

I know. But I’d trust BR to get the best out of him. We know what he is capable of. His stock is low right now, but he still has the ability. A great option to have – too much natural talent is suppressed these days with over cautious play but as I say, I;d be interested to see what Rodgers could get out of him.

An instant upgrade on a number of players currently on our books.
