Face a lame duck manager who’s lost the dressing room or an interim

542

Given a choice, you would rather a rival pitch up to play you with a lame duck manager who has clearly lost the dressing room, than sack him and allow players and coaches an opportunity to disavow some of his more glaring errors.  Rene Weiler took Anderlecht to the Belgian title in May, his first season at the club.  But, when he was sacked yesterday, they sat ninth in the Jupiler table with just two wins and eight goals in seven games.

They have a cup game away to lower league Westerlo tomorrow, the third consecutive away game in a series of four, before Celtic come to town in eight days.  The Anderlecht board’s hope is that they can remain in the cup, then pick up a win against Waasland-Beverent (seventh, but on the same points as Anderlecht), in an attempt to stabilise the club before the crucial Champions League game with Celtic.

By any measure, Anderlecht have been rubbish this season, but they will employ the weapon all rubbish teams have, that of an embattled underdog who is capable of raising standards by exception.  Their performance at the Allianz Arena last week, where 10-men gave Bayern Munich some nervous moments, is an indication of what we are likely to face next week.

The game in Brussels is not only our most important game of the next week, it’s the most important game between now and December, when Anderlecht visit Celtic Park.  Despite their historical-comparative rubbish status, Anderlecht are better than any team we will face in Scotland.  Notwithstanding that, our objective has to be a win in Brussels.

I was there at Hampden when Paul Wilson scored twice as we won the Scottish Cup against Old Airdrie in 1975.  Paul was an exciting player during an era when our star was fading.  We enjoyed the thrill of seeing a breakthrough, flamboyant, talent emerge.  I still recall that header against Spain which seemed to affirm Paul as the genuine article.

The four years after nine-in-a-row finished was an era of decline.  Kenny Dalglish carried the team to an extent we have never really acknowledged as a club, or a support.  But Jock Stein’s period of pre-eminence was long gone before Paul Wilson and his contemporaries made their mark.  Paul moved on in 1978 to little fanfare, as Celtic finished fifth and Stein was asked to leave the dugout.

On his death yesterday, he was noted as a trailblazing player of Asian descent in British football at a time when inclusivity was not a term society was familiar with.  He was that, but for me, he was a young and powerful Celtic striker who put the ball in the net with ease.

Win tickets for Ibrox

Our raffle to win two tickets to the Celtic end at Ibrox for Saturday’s game ends at midnight TONIGHT!!  If like me, you’re stuck without a ticket, this is your chance.  Celtic sponsor and all-round good guys, Intelligent Car Leasing, provided the tickets to support our work with Mary’s Meals.

As you will know by now, over 3,000 children in Malawi and Liberia eat a school meal each day because of money raised by CQN’ers.  This improves lives in a profound way.

To enter the raffle, answer this question:

Which Belgian team will Celtic face in this season’s Champions League?

Please donate a minimum of £5 to this MyDonate page. Then forward your confirmation email with your answer in the SUBJECT LINE to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Winner will be informed early tomorrow, so make sure you include adequate contact information.

Many thanks to you and Intelligent Car Leasing.

  1. MMHOME & Gorbals.

There is a train running regularly from Malaga down To Fuengirola, It stops at all main resorts & is a cheap hassle free way to get from resort to resort.

As a few of the lads said earlier the John Lemon just off Bonanza Square in Benalmadena is one of the top Celtic Bars in Europe. It;s definitely the one to go to. I’ll be there for the Anderlecht game.

If you like Indian cuisine and are in Torremolinos which is just alongside Benalmadena , there is a restaurant just off the main Square there called the Kathmandu which is superb.

There is also a cracking Chinese Restaurant in Benalmadena it’s a fixed price eat as much as you like job.

For the main course you select the raw materials and bring them to the Chef and he cooks them over right you.

Can’t remember the name of the place but if you leave the train Station in Benelmadena walk past the Catholic Church & keep walking for about a half mile you come on it, same side of street as Church.

I know that is a shite way to give directions but maybe Auldheid or some guy more familiar with the area might know the place I’m talking about & might post the name on here.

  2. Mmhome: John Lemon pub is up near the train station which is a good walk from the beach area so check your location before you set off.

There are lots of restaurants all the way from Torremolinas to Fuengirola. The 120 bus will get you to all sea front areas.

La Carhuela between Torremolinas and B’madena and Los Boliches in Fuengirola are my favourite areas to eat out in. Timmys in Torreblanca (200 yards from railway station) is another good Celtic bar.

  3. Saturday’s referee is ………………………

Can anyone supply a satisfactory end to that sentence?

I’ve been trying for the last 10 minutes!

  4. Corky

There are Chinese called the Wok Buffet all over the area, they are what you say and great value if you can put it away, every chance that’s what it’s called :-)

    HH

  5. Lads thanks for all the feedback i have it all jotted down :-)

Gorbalstam i might just have a long stroll up to the John Lemon bar in the afternoon in time for kick off

Corkcelt i may bump in to you on Wednesday and have a beer or two. I do like an indian so that is a great help.

Almore thanks for the bus number that will be a help as i dont hire a car when away. Planning to take a trip down to Gibralter one day also.

    HH

  6. Corkcelt,

The restaurant isn’t called “Kubla Khans Crazy Mongolian Stir Fry” is it ?

(Probably not) but there was a place in Houston called exactly that, and they did the same with the main course there – fill up a bowl with whatever you wanted, pick two sauces, and then the Chef asked if you wanted rice or noodles ( about 4 different varieties of each ), and it was cooked there and then on a hibachi grill and brought to your table steaming.

    Bloomin’ lovely it was…..

    :-)

  7. Pena has gone from £4.5 mill according to BFDJ, to £2m according to the fat gardner in a week, and here’s me thinking he was the bestest player that has ever graced scotland’s soil.

  8. I was interested to see the hotel plans last night.

After the attempt by the Council to block the plans for the Celtic Shop a few years ago under the pretence that “it would harm other shops in the area” I’ve heard that there are plans to rush through a new hotel up near the new Police Scotland building.

This may be another attempt to block expansion by claiming there is no need for Celtic to have a hotel as there will be another close by.

Has anybody else heard anything regarding another hotel development?

  9. This is from bbc website

The players are out at Ibrox, and kick-off is imminent. Likewise at Easter Road…

I could have sworn it was at firhill

  10. Hunderbirds are Gone on

You seem to have got quite a bit of good advice already. I have stayed where you are going to….good place. For the match I would go for John Lemon though some also like the Madass and Auldheid I think goes to a place just down from the Madass. For eating I would recommend Bar 76 and Sabatinis which are on the main road just past McDonald’s. Also Hong Kong Aberdeen on Palm Tree Avenue just round the corner from you. I also like Palm5 for a drink and above that is Panorama – both on the front about a 10 minute walk along as well as Lime and Lemon which is just along from them. Check Trip Advisor and see what you think. Hope you have a great trip.

  13. Even Hun commentators on radio scotland are astounded at ref’s pro rangers decisions. Jyust wait till Saturday!

  14. The train station nearest to John Lemons is Arroyo de La Miel or Honeyburn to Scots.

It’s a 15 min walk to JL but downhill all the way and level on the way back because you don’t notice the hill.

If in Torremolinos or Benalmadena at Marina area the 121 bus to Mijas passes Bonanaza Square, so get off there and JL is 5 mins walk at most. Find the church just above Bonanza which isn’t obvious from the bus as it’s hidden by buildings and with church door on your left walk up hill and JL is on right about 100 yards.

I was thinking of going there for Anderlecht game but looks like it’s gonnae be mobbed :) :)

  17. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Hard to see a future as a professional footballer for Windass.

He seems to have problems with basic motor skills like walking… and, eh… standing.

  18. For all you Bhoys that missed out on meeting Mike in Toronto in Glasgow, I can confirm that he is real. I can also confirm that, he is as expected, a proper gentleman and excellent company. Knowledgeable, passionate about his team, loved his time in Dublin, Belfast ( and the people who took the time to take care of him whilst there ) and most definitely not a beer drinker :-)))

Safe Travels Mike, and look forward to seeing you back in Glasgow, preferably inside Celtic Park next time.

P.S. Don’t cross Big Mike…..he knows some baaaaad people ;-)
