Failure elsewhere cannot disguise abject Celtic challenge

1009

As the darkest clouds descend over Ibrox with news that medals in their trophy room have been poinded by sheriff officers, sentiment in our half of the city is no brighter.  Celtic’s best chance to win the league this season lies not in outpointing everyone else, or seeing their principle rivals lose 10 points, it is in the complete obliteration of Rangers, allowing us to take our chances with Motherwell, who can open up a six point gap between second and third against Celtic on Sunday.

Whatever the following weeks bring for Rangers, if Celtic winning the league is a consequence, we cannot allow the title to disguise the abject failure to be competitive so far this season.

I think playing a left back at left back is just too innovative.

But I like the look of that team.

I wondered about the medals issue too. Someone suggested earlier that they are the medals to be handed out to Rangers at the end of THIS season. Ouch!

  5. Ki is the latest in a long line of examples where Celtic fans look at a guy’s face and decide it doesn’t fit. He doesn’t grit his teeth and bawl and shout or whatever, therefore he’s not of the Celtic mould.

He has played more minutes than any other Celtic player this season – this despite two return trips to the Far East between times.

He has one of the best goals/assists stats this season – 1 every 176 mins. That’s better than James Forrest, by the way. And before anyone gives it ‘Stats don’t tell the whole story’ – true, but neither do the rantings of umpteen Celtic fans.

He hasn’t played as well this season compared to last – but who has? Let’s see. There’s Joe Ledley, Lukasz Zaluska. Em, that’s it.

Look across from him. There stands the culprit!

That’s the team I would play in every game. Looks very solid to me.

I think even swapping Commons for McCourt would work.

I like Hooper and Ki but really think they have been under-performing.

my god how far our standards and ambitions have fallen!!!

maybe our ceo greatest achievement, when he eventually leaves, will be in lowering the celtics support ambition into calling for the likes of mccourt and samaras to be playing

theyre team on saturday cost 20m ours cost 6m

we bring on mccourt they bring on 3.5m striker

they have 10 players physically strong @ 6ft+

we have small physically weak players

we spent virtually nothing in close season and even failed to spend the monies gotten in from mcgeady, boruc fortune mcmanus et al

what you sow you reap but our net debt is super so i guess the happy clappers will be happy

Kojo – relax – I am not on hear to be judge and jury of other peoples views and opinions

(although I am always keen to read yours)

Like most I dont know the facts and as a consequence I look to try and understand why we are in such a state

Clearly something is wrong at our club

There are those who blame Lawell – not me – Lawell was around last year when we only lost the league by a point

Lawell was around when we won three in a row with GS

I believe there is a difference in attitude between the players and the management team this year

I do not know why – hence, my earlier post to you – I was looking for answers that probably no one knows

But we are not a happy club – there is an atmosphere around our team

If as you say Neil has lost the dressing room – there is no way back

Finally just to make my position clear – I did not think it fair to appoint Neil in the first place – its his first management job???

But I thought he did a good job last year (not winning the league will haunt him and us for ever)

but this year I think we need to change our manager

Treat Neil with dignity (after all he has been through he deserves dignity)

and leave the door open for the future – it simply is not Neil’s time

Finally Lawell needs to go get Mark Hughes (or someone of that style – a manager)

The team is good enough its not the players

I would love to be wrong!!

  16. DBBIA,

Could you blame me if I did hide in the cupboard. I’ve just found out that Kojo’s been known to roam in my ‘hood.

    Only kiddin’ Kojo ;-)

  17. Kojo,

Did we not hear people saying that last year when Lennon was appointed (beautiful friendship)?

Where we disagree is that you think Lennon must go, I’m not so sure (I just don’t know who we could realistically bring in at this point to improve things) – where we do agree is that he needs to grow some cojones and deal with the underperformers!

Lennon’s curse was to (a) take over a team with issues – over the city, Ally has taken over a team which pretty much runs itself due to Smith putting in the foundations (an Ally doing the coaching for so long) (b) have a good year last year – management is easy when things are going well, players can pretty much sort themselves out, it’s when things go badly that they look to the manager to change things or provide leadership and direction – a hard first season might have developed these skills in Lennon – I’m not sure he has this skillset yet, and having a bad year last year (which we would have been more tolerant of, given where we were when he took over and everything that went on in his personal life) would have helped! Ally still has to face these problems, but at least has the experience of McDowall (sp?) beside him, along with his 3 or so years coaching experience, in the face of adversity what with the financial situation hanging over them so long – Lennon has guys who have little coaching experience between them, and certainly none in the face of adversity! A mentor would have helped – not Baxter, but someone who had been through the hard times!

  18. Our plan to recruit young talent and sell for profit is not the problem.

It should be bolstered by spending on experience quality to guide.

There also seems to be no strategy to incorporate youth into first team.

Is there a cohesive strategy amongst all coaches from youth to first team to use same playing systems at all levels?

Now as not the time to bring in youngsters as we seem to have no properly implemented playing system and the pressure would be unfair in present circumstances.

If La well is going to continue with his failed strategy then he should see it properly implented to fruition.

If not we will continue spiralling down as a football side.

A director of football should be appointed for this task.

  19. Vinibhoy

Ignore me – just going off on one. :-)

Actually, quite a few have laid in to him recently, many forcing him to share the same ignominious chair of shame as Kayal – codswallop, good sirs!

Not sure if he’s tired (although he’d have every excuse). His laconic style doesn’t look busy enough for folk looking for a right guid player wha puts a shift in, but he’s got the goods.

  20. Bundoran Bhoy -I’ve joined your ole Movember team, but I’m not playing centre half.

South of Tunis I have no knowledge of these Candlewick knickers, but Julie might, as she has led a very interesting life, according to her anyway.

There was a good documentary on BBCR4 yesterday,I caught it by accident when I was outside trying to unblock a stank.

It was on recording studios, especially Island Records.

THose were the days, when the ole record label meant something.

Buying potential is a great idea, but you must give them experienced players to play beside or they will learn nothing and instead of improving they will go backwards.

i think ki is quality player but to win the league in scotland we do not need players like him look across the river

they have no one of ki’s quality but have won 3 titles in arow

i think ki would be revelation in spain or even down south so unfortunately i would cash in on him for both our sakes

The funny thing is we slag off Broonies headless chicken style, then Ki for not running about enough. I think we might be fickle!

  25. I was wondering.

If the huns go bust and get kicked out of the SPL, will it affect Peter Lawwell’s bonus?

  26. Fritzsong,

I agree, but suspect he’ll inevitably head down south – first decent offer we get, and we’ll get a fair few I would have thought! We should play him more now – we might as well get value out of him while we have him!

You may well be right, but that is a separate argument. How would you feel at the prospect of 11 Kayals in the side right now?

There’s always space in a team for a player of Ki’s abilities. Even Rangers (hachput) have their Wyldes, Naismiths (oh, sorry, they don’t, forgot) etc

But point taken. We need more brawn, for sure.
