Fan power begins to flex its muscle

1098

I am sure Neil Doncaster’s job is full of stresses and strains but this week will probably be a breeze.  Fans of every club in the league appear to be in uproar at the resolutions for an Insolvency Transfer Event to be voted on later this month. Infuriating everyone is surely better than infuriating most but leaving one group happy.

Fans of 11 SPL clubs have reacted in horror that the league seek to introduce a facility to allow a liquidated club to phoenix straight back into the top tier of Scottish football.  Fans of Rangers, while along with administrators and bidders for the club are publicly opposed to liquidation, are outraged that this new facility to allow a new club entry to the SPL should carry a sporting and financial inhibitor.

For clarification: the inhibitor is there to ensure clubs have a modicum of moral hazard against gaining an unfair advantage before ditching creditors and their old skins, and emerging in the SPL with player registrations from another club but without the debts or consequences of mismanagement.

Rangers US and Singapore based bidders seem unperturbed by the proposals.  Paul Murray’s Blue Knights consortium has curiously lost its tongue.  Maybe this helps explain all those years when the EBTs were unopposed by the former Rangers board.  Silence, not even an utterance!

There remains three possible outcomes to this issue:

The proposed SPL resolutions will be passed, allowing a Newco straight entry to the League.

The resolutions will fail and the SPL board will vote a Newco into the league anyway.

The resolutions will fail and the SPL board will deny Newco a place in the league.

Celtic Quick News first flagged this scenario in October last year when we predicted Newco would be given a parachute into the SPL, opposed only by Celtic.  As the key resolution (2A) requires only 8 votes I still expect this to happen, despite the ‘Bring it on’ view of many Rangers fans to the prospect of starting again from Division Three.

As the financial penalty resolution (2B) requires 11 votes I expect this to fail and no financial penalties to be imposed.

The question for Kilmarnock, Dunfermline, St Mirren, Inverness, Motherwell, St Johnstone, Hibs and Kilmarnock (don’t tell me they’ll not try to get two votes, they have a huge mountain of debt to service and have every right to demand two votes) is, will they listen to their fans or their bank manager?

Dundee United and Hearts, like North Korea, appear convinced of their own superior wisdom and, like a North Korean missile, could head off in any random direction to demonstrate their contempt for clubs scared of providing satirists with material.  They could easily vote themselves into a Gorgie-Tannadice League, if they could agree on a Gorgie-Tannadice/Tannadice-Gorgie naming convention.

For now, if you care about any of this, participate in the online SPL Fan Survey.  We’ll soon find out who runs Scottish football, fans or the Bank of Scotland! One additional point about democracy, it carries responsibility. In this instance, stopping Newco means fans of all remaining clubs have to step forward in increasing numbers to buy season tickets. This is the cost of sporting integrity.

  1. When we are saying that the Gang of Ten will sell their soul for a couple of quid anyone know what sort of attendance Aberdeen/Hibs will have tomorrow?

It kills me they bring a maximum 9000 for a semi-final and if they win suddenly there are 17000 wanting to come along…

  2. Is he having a laugh mentioning Sporting Integrity?

ST MIRREN chairman Stewart Gilmour has given his backing to planned Financial Fair Play rules, telling SPL rivals: “It time to live within your means.”

SPL boss Neil Doncaster has drawn up a list of rule changes which will crack down on clubs who spend more than they earn.

Saints chief Gilmour and fellow club chairmen will be asked to vote on the proposals at a league board meeting on April 30.

Among the planned changes are steep points penalties and prize-money reductions for sides who suffer an ‘insolvency event’.

The move comes in response to the £134million cash crisis which dragged ousted SPL champions Rangers into administration.

And Gilmour has hinted he will back the plans when time comes for him to cast his ballot.

The Buddies chief and Saints’ board risked their own hard-earned cash in order to secure the Paisley club’s future.

They cleared around £3.3m worth of debt and left a lasting legacy in the shape of a brand new £12m stadium and state-of-the-art training ground.

St Mirren also took their medicine as they cut their playing budget year after year – and now Gilmour says other sides must do the same.

He told Express Sports: “We haven’t discussed the proposals as a board yet but I have had a quick look through them.

“In terms of dealing with clubs who go into administration, liquidation or who do not play their players’ wages, my initial reaction is that these proposals are a positive way forward.

“We have to tighten up the rules because when clubs are not living within their means, it damages the sporting integrity of the league.”

Among Doncaster’s proposals are plans to increase the number of points that will be docked from sides who go into administration.

Currently, teams calling in outside help to get their finances back on a level footing face a 10-point deduction but that could be increased to 15 – or possibly even a third of the club’s points tally from the previous season.

Other proposals being mooted are future punishments for clubs suffering a financial meltdown which will see them face 10-point deductions per season for two years, as well as prize-money fines.

Gilmour added: “I do think the proposal to increase points penalties is a good one.

“A 10-point penalty for sides like St Mirren, Inverness and Kilmarnock is a lot more severe that it is for sides like Rangers and Celtic. It’s about making the punishment fit the crime.”

St Mirren were also left unhappy after Hearts snapped up striker Craig Beattie just days before announcing they couldn’t afford to pay the rest of their squad – but the new rules could prevent that happening in future.

The former Celtic man then played a crucial part as the Jambos knocked Danny Lennon’s side out of the Scottish Cup and Gilmour said: “As a club, we were aggrieved that Hearts were able to sign a player after they had failed to pay their players. We found that quite strange.

“I’m told that was only able to happen because the SPL rules were not well-enough written to deal with something like this. So that has to change.”

  4. Neil Lennon has refused to comment on SPL proposals which could hand Celtic a clear advantage over Rangers in the next two seasons.

Lennon said: “Look, I’m not going to comment on that at the minute.

“I think it’s only fair that we wait and see how things develop whatever happens to Rangers over the next two to three months and when that does happen or it materialises then I will comment on it then.”

  8. The irony of all of the bluster and nonsense is that and newco rangers will be unlikely to get everything done in time to come close to starting next season with no team / stadium / season book / corporate sales / TV deal etc etc etc….never mind in a league with no sponsor and with no club shirt sponsor / commercial team themselves etc etc etc

The court cases with eliis / whyte / others / HMRC will run and run……

Anything considered by the SPL will only be second guessing what might be possible outcomes for the rotting carcass of the club formerly known as Rangers….

Well said Neil, land the trophy’s and then give them the soundbites they are desperate to get.

We will have to play well to win the Cup, so that means being fully focused and having the right attitude when we go on to the pitch. If the Celtic players want to win it badly enough, they will win it.

There appears to be 2 Celtic teams these days. One starts off pressing high up the park, and moves the ball at a fairly quick tempo. The other one doesn’t. One team played Killie at hamper. The other team played Killie in Kilmarnock.

If the wrong version plays against hearts, I would suggest that we likely won’t win.

Glad to hear Regans response. I e-mailed him and Platini when the issue first arose and Paul asked us to act. I have not had the courtesy of a response but it is good to know that the SFA are indeed aware at least of the issue of political interference. I just hope it doesn’t bite Celtic on the bum when UEFA take an interest.

I think the fact Neil gave him a 3 year contract straight away suggests to me he is going to be a belter of a player. I think the management team know what they want to do with him and I’m sure next season he will play a prominent role in the first team.

Ultimately, you may well be right and he fizzles out but I thought it was significant he was on the bench last week when he got to experience Celtic winning a Championship. Who would not be inspired by the performance of the Celtic fans last week. ;)

  18. Ibrahim is a central playmaker. Can’t see him getting a regular game unless he is spectacular when given a chance, we’d need to change our formation to allow him to play or he’d need to gain a combative strength to his game.

I’ve seen him a couple of times in the development games and he’s looked a class apart at times, will be interesting to see how he gets on if he gets his chance.

You were in my thoughts too VP…….

  23. Auldheid so a club needs to provide 3 years audited accounts to get an SFA licence.

We know Rangers are already in breach of this. You also pose the question how can a completely new entity that has never kicked a ball and no history of audited accounts gain a licence?

So why are the SPL going to all this trouble.

They would need all these rules only if a Newco with an SFA licence applies.

The only way I can see this happening is by buying up another Senior Scottish club. Remember the enquiries at St. Mirren. What if another club has been set up for a buy out.

Looking at the Third Division,.one team jumps out as an obvious. Third bottom of the league……..Clyde.

Buy them out for a couple of million and we have Clyde Rangers.

It may be a fanciful theory. It does tick a number of boxes.

We might not win anyway – I’m sure you’ll agree Celtic have no devine right to win every game. Hearts are always up for it, so we’ll have to be prepared for a battle.

In terms of the League Cup final – Celtic did not play badly on the day, and Kilmarnock certainly played well, they took one of their chances and we didn’t. And although I was disappointed we lost, I think Killie deserve some credit for their performance.

I just think there is a bit of a myth regarding Celtic and big games. Our biggest match of the season was November 6 at Fir Park – Motherwell were second in the league and we were 15 points behind the Huns.

Celtic won 2-1. The following week we travelled to Inverness and won 2-0 in another massive match. We beat Rangers in December to go top of the league after clawing back that 15 advantage – yet another massive game won.

We lost at Ibrox a few weeks ago when we were 21 points clear of the Huns with eight games to go. While any defeat by Rangers is annoying – in the overall scheme of things it was no big deal.

They had their day in the sun – but we are the champions and that defeat is meaningless now.

  25. Celtic Champions Elect – really what a response – your unquestionning attitude reminds me of our very own press. Celtic need to act – they better had or else Celtic may be in more danger that Rangers.

Uch whats the point trying to debate with you – there’s nothing in there.

  26. Speaking to an Orc today I asked how much he had contributed to their fighting fund.

His answer was “If I had a tenner that needed watching and there was only 3 people to watch it.

    1. David Murray

    2Craig Whyte

    3 Mark Dingwall .

I would give Murray & Whyte £5 each to hold for me that way there is a chance in a million I would see some of my money, With Dingwall there is no chance, I would not trust him a far as i could throw him”

Deary deary me how much do they think of dingbat if they would give Murray & Whyte their last before him, And he claims to speak for their fans .
