Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

    I read a good post earlier from someone mentioning the carve up by the ‘G8’ teams of the UEFA coefficients, tv payouts etc.

    Maybe PL could organise a boycott of UEFA competition with other marginalised teams from europe, until there is equal distribution of money.

    A boycott (straight out the left field), or even talk of a boycott could force UEFA’s hand into equitable sharing. If the top leagues threaten to form their own crappy super league, it could be the catalyst for change we need where small leagues amalgamate and we form our own league and association.

    It’s like the labour Party – always being attacked and allowing the elite to set the narrative and agenda, shifting everything continually to the right.

    Time to stand up celtic, or we will never see a top player at Celtic park again, except in a pre season friendly. Think it’s bad now? In three years it will have deteriorated another huge chunk. We will be lucky to sign the likes of Ciftci when up against english division 1 and 2 teams.

    In ten years time once the USA, Russia, Turkey, Japan, China etc get their football going efficiently, we’ll be as relevant as Third Lanark.

    Celtic’s tipping point is already in the post; a few more years of this and even with the huns around, we’re finished in any meaningful european context.

    Revolution Now!!!

    That would be us getting the thrashings Malmo will.

  3. Look on CQN, what Roy Keane thinks about Celtic.

    Of course, the usual suspects will say….what does he know.

    FLEAGLE188. Two ways you can look at it I suppose in that section we would have got a few thumpings or it would have been great to see those teams in the flesh.I think the second one would have been good. H.H.

    Well, let’s see what you COULD have won;

    Paris St Germain Real Madrid Shakhtar Donetsk Malmo

    Well Done, Pedro!

    Never mind, the nights are starting to draw in. It’ll soon be time to fire up the old undersoil heating on your driveway, eh? Brother Walfrid must be turning in his grave seeing you do that.

  6. the glorious balance sheet on

    A few years back I would have looked at that Malmo draw and been completely sickened, gutted at missing out on Real Madrid and the rest.

    Now though I`m actually grateful that we didn`t make it through. That’s how much my expectations have been lowered. I know we would have got absolutely mauled in that group.

    A bullet dodged.

  7. Thegreenman….

    No, don’t agree Ronny looked terrified before the match. Quite the opposite in fact. Looked very determined and confident his players would do the job.

    He is a very good performer in front of the camera and in front of the hacks.

    Just my opinion.

    However….

    After the match he looked plain, unadulterated angry! This gives me hope!

  8. What a silver lining eh….at least we wont get pumped six times.

    Ha…its fecking ridiculous

  9. 22mil lost this year, how much did we lose last year despite UEFA handing us 2 attempts at getting our hands on the CL jackpot. Lets call it 35mil in total. No mention of accountability for this shocking loss of income. Everyone knows in any business outwith Celtic someone’s ars* would be severely booted out the door for rank incompetence. Go and lose a couple of grand for your employer and see how long you stay in a job! Now as fans we are basically told to adopt a Mowbray like attitude and ‘take it on the chin’ as that’s the way it is, can’t compete with the English leagues and yet smaller teams than Celtic from small leagues seem to do ok. Meanwhile we continue to watch our best players sold and replaced with players of lesser ability. Problem with the ‘buy raw potential develop and sell for profit’ strategy is that after the departure of VvD we haven’t anyone in our squad worth anything, in football terms that is. For the strategy to work we need to ‘find a gem’ every season or so. The last player we had that fell into that category was Jason D but he wasn’t even Celtic player so all we achieved was adding X millions to the worth of a player that another team will profit from. A total rethink on how and why we acquire players is called for. No one can stop a good player wanting to leave for the bright lights of Norwich or Southampton but they really do have control over the quality of the replacement brought in.

    I have never seen Ronny so angry during a game it was easy to lip read some of the words coming out his mouth and they were not complimentary

  16. My suggestion is this; If you are happy to see Celtic plum the depths of mediocrity, and can accept that kind of football.

    “THERE’S less than 24 hours to go until Celtic discover their UEFA Europa League group stage opponents with the draw scheduled to take place in Monaco tomorrow at 12.00noon (Celtic Park time).

    With memories still fresh from last season’s dramatic Europa League meeting with Inter Milan in Paradise and the prospect of facing opposition from the likes of Villareal or Borussia Dortmund this time around, fans are guaranteed even more exciting European football at Celtic Park in the coming months.

    Regardless of the opposition, there’s nothing more exciting than a European night in Paradise and a 2015/16 Season Ticket is the only way to guarantee your seat for all the big occasions.”

    “It’s just over 24 hours since Celtic discovered their UEFA Champions League fate, having been soundly beaten over two legs by Malmo of Sweden.

    With memories still fresh from the capitulation to Malmo (both in injury time at Paradise and away in Sweden), the prospect of facing opposition from the likes of Villareal or Borussia Dortmund is f*cking frightening. Our fans (aka cash cows) might get one or two exciting 2nd tier European football at Celtic Park, but, by and large, the games will be pretty unglamorous (or embarrassing if we draw said Villarreal or Dortmund) and will take place at inconvenient times on Thursday nights.

    Regardless of the opposition (don’t worry that we are missing out on European football’s elite), there’s nothing more exciting than a Champions League night in Paradise, however, with (or without) a 2015/16 Season Ticket you are guaranteed as many seats for all the Europa League matches.”

  21. We have to move on from the Malmo fiasco. Important few days coming up. Our Europa opponents tomorrow, an important League game Saturday and deadline day next Tuesday. I want a group that gives us the best chance of reaching the knock out stages. I want a good show and 3 points against St. Johnstone and I want rid of Derk and a new left back and striker by Tuesday. Also if Virgil goes a big tough centre half to replace.

    P.S. The CL money is gone no use crying over spilled milk, I’d rather be winning games in the Europa rather then getting pumped in the Champions League.

Lennoxtown well bought and paid for.what do you want players to go to Barrowfield which has good pitches ,but thats about all,no modern day facilities.which is a disgrace,but for that to happen,i think it would be down to fans again,for that to be upgraded,because Dermot Desmond him being so tight wont do it.so put this to bed that lennoxtown is no good,its the quality of players,which is the problem.and maybe maybe coaches to.and i see Stevie May is going out on loan from Sheffield Weds, do you think he would be ok with Celtic.

    “setting free the bears Nobody is asking for £6.0 million strikers, we are asking for some reasonable investment in much needed areas of the team”

    I am afraid they are. You may not be but CQN posters are. What is reasonable spend? How much more than what we spent on Balde, Pukki or Scepovic? Put a figure on it and we’ll see what we are talking about.

    At the moment, I frankly don’t beleive the posters who think they are calling for just a moderate amount more of spending, nor do I believe they would be satisfied when that was spent and our fortunes remained unchanged.

    antipodean red at 9:51 am

    “setting free the bears,

    It really depends on the manner in which you spend the money allocated. We have signed the following in the past five years, full-time or on loan. Bangura, Pukki, Lassad, Miku, Broziek, Boeriggter, Scepovic, Guidetti, Berget, Tonev, Ciftci, Zaluska, Gershon, Balde and Wakaso. There’s a team and almost a bench worth of absolute dross. Who scouts these guys? If you run a business and you were to continue bringing in contracts that either lost you money or failed altogether, your position would very soon be under pressure.”

    Of course we did recruit badly (BTW- you missed out Mouyokolo and, more tellingly, Berget) but that is inevitable when you are shopping in the punt/prospect market, which is where we speculate to accumulate.

    Alongside those duds bought by thos sackable dud scouts and recruiters, you have very good recruitment of Wanyama, Foster, Van Dijk, Bitton and Gordon”

    You have decent purchases in Lustig, Izzaguire, Ledley, Commons, Armstrong, Johansen and Mackay Stevens”

    You might even have promise in a Janko or a Scott Allen.

    So any manager does not judge the failures only but considers all in the round. If you or any other thinks they have a better method or track record for identifying football talent well there’s a well paid industry out there- Give it a go!

    However, forgive my scepticism as I have never seen any poster on here continually pick winners and never pick a dud. Someone must be hiding their light well if there are better judges out there.

    “We have stumbled by dross teams in the SPL these past few weeks, the worst Kilmarnock team in maybe 25-50 years, the worst Dundee Utd team that I can ever remember watching. ”

    The same judgements were being made after Legia/Maribor. I think with more justification at that time. Yet the season ended with a highly effective domestic campaign and a high level of SB renewals- I have been hearing the promise/threat of 20k supporters since WGS’s 2nd year in the job.

    Since GS’s last season (2008/2009) we have gained £65m in transfers, and laid out £57m.

    So we’ve made an £8m profit in 8 years from transfers fees only (this does not count wages, which obviously means we’ll have made a huge loss)

    ~~~~~~~~~~++~~~~~~~~~~
    KEVINJOHN,
    As usual,the wages costs of players bought are thrown into the argument.
    Why are the wages costs of players sold never factored in?
    As an example,Johansen was bought at the same time as Ledley was sold,and apparently for about the same money. There’s no way Johansen is getting anywhere near what Ledley was getting.
    In addition,our cost-cutting over the years has seen our wage bill rocket. I’ve yet to see an explanation for that.
  30. Stairheedrammy on
    We performed well in Europe this season up until that lasts minute goal from Berget. Once in Sweden we played nowhere near our potential and our experience CL players seemed overawed by the occasion and did next to nothing in the game. It’s a disappointment yes, it’s the end of the world no. We have no Devine right to win and like anyone else can have off days. Unfortunately this one happened at the worst time possible.
    I’d rather we had banked 30+ million which would (SHOULD) have allowed us to start buying decent proven players. If a few pumpings at the hands of the Euro giants on the road to our building a team able to qualify and compete rather than capitulate in Europe was the price i’d take the pain for a season or 2, and i assume most tims would also. EL worth heehaw money wise, which means little or no investment in the team and as someone else already mentioned if we draw a Spanish or German team in the euro losers league a real pumping is just as likely as if we played Barca in the CL. The only difference being the soothing lubrication of the CL KY gel (cash) pouring into the CP coffers
