Fixtures in 2003, 2008, and 19th C Glasgow

925

The mind is a remarkable thing.  If you ask around, you’ll find Celtic fans tell you we played Boavista in the Uefa Cup semi-final in Porto on the Thursday night, before going to Ibrox on the Saturday (it was the Sunday).

Similarly, Barry Ferguson is mumping his gums without restrain today, complaining about Rangers fixtures in May 2008.  Rangers were due to play a ridiculous number of games in May due to qualifying for the Scottish Cup and Uefa Cup finals, while catching up on postponed fixtures.

The SPL decided to accommodate them by extending the league programme until two days before the Scottish Cup final.  This final was on the last possible date before clubs were ordered to release players for that year’s Uefa European Championships, which started 14 days later.

This season has echoes of 2008 but nothing more.  Whereas clubs would have been forbidden from using certain players after the date of the Scottish Cup final in 2008, under current proposals for this year, the second bottom club from the Premiership and qualifier from the Championship will need to retain a number of players beyond their contract end date of 31 May.

Retaining players beyond 31 May will cost clubs money, and players could theoretically refuse to extend their season by a few days, which is this season’s problem.  2008’s problem was a hard deadline imposed by Uefa with no extensions possible.  The decision was out of the SPL’s hands.

Great article on the club site today marking Br. Walfrid’s passing and the struggles faced by our forefathers in the late 19th Century.  The news that the Foundation are feeding 500 of Glasgow’s homeless today continues the momentum from Wednesday night.  Well done to all involved.

Roy, in the footage of the game v the defunct club in 1983, watch sally & cooper’s greeting to eac other when sally is replaced by cooper.

Brian whittaker’s reaction to davie mckinnon grabbing him is also good viewing.

  5. Re Sunday

Pleased to see Ronny D switch to 442 on Wednesday after 65 minutes.

One of big challenges in Scottish football is familiarity, and unless you have exceptional players of the Larsson, McStay calibre, then the opposition can easily spend time devising formations which counter yours.

In our case, i think one or two teams, St J , ICT, had sussed how to counter our 4231, and making the switch at the time we did, threw their game plan.

I am not suggesting we should go 442 on Sunday, but, i suspect, Yogi will probably have plans in situ to counter both 442 and 4231, so , IMHO as part of our plans, we should have players prepared to switch formations ( to whatever) within seconds , and catch them cold.

On a totally different, Blur are on Jools right now – Damon Albarn is a musical genius imho, and to have led so many different leading edge bands over last 20 years is a credit to his ability

  10. Song For Marcella

    Bik McFarlane

Doesn´t seem quite so long ago,

The last time that I saw you,

Ain´t it funny how the memories grow,

    They always fold around you,

They tried to break you in a living hell,

But they couldn´t find a way,

So they killed you in a H-Block cell,

And hoped that all would turn away,

Thought that your spirit couldn´t rise again

But it dared to prove them wrong,

And in death you tore away the chains,

And let the world hear Freedom´s Song

Yet the heartache and pain linger on,

They´re still here though its so long since you have gone,

But we´re stronger now you showed us how,

How freedom fight can be won

I wish there was an easy road to chose,

To bring the heartache to an end,

But easy roads are always sure to lose,

I´ve seen that time and time again,

If you can stand by me like yesterday,

I´ll find the strength to carry on,

So let your spirit shine along the way,

And our day will surely come

Yet the heartache and pain linger on,

They´re still here though its so long since you have gone,

But we´re stronger now you showed us how,

How freedom fight can be won, if we all stand as one

Clashcitybhoy, i hope we are flexible with our formation on sunday.

If the caley players repeat their performance from last week and we improve ours from last saturday, we should win. Caley used the narrowness and condition of their Pitch to their advantage.

  14. Recently, on the 8th March outside Tannadice, I paid my tenner and joined the Celtic Trust.

Since then, I’ve been to the AGM and a subsequent meeting. When I joined it cost me a tenner but we’re now looking to see if we can get more folk to join if we lower the joining fee to as little as a pound. You wouldn’t need to do anything, you’d simply pay your pound and then be notified by email of any work being done by the trust.

All you’d be doing is empowering Celtic supporters to have a greater say in the issues involving the Celtic support.

Despite what others may have tried to tell you, the CT does a multitude of things on behalf of the support, much of which isn’t even know about.

To relieve the strain I’d ask that you mail me personally if you wish to join. All you need to do is provide me with your email, name and willingness to pay one quid.

    Yours in Celtic.

    The Time Has Come

    – by Christy Moore

The time has come to part, my love,

    I must go away

I leave you now, my darling girl,

    No longer can I stay.

My heart like yours is breaking

    Together we’ll prove strong

The road I take will show the world

    The suffering that goes on.

The gentle clasp that holds my hand

    Must loosen and let go

Please help me through the door

    Though instinct tells you no.

    Our vow it is eternal

And will bring you dreadful pain

But if our demands aren’t recognised

    Don’t call me back again.

How their sorrow touched us all

    In those final days

When it was the time she held the door

    And touched his sallow face.

The flame he lit by leaving

    Is still burning strong

By the lights it’s plain to see

    The suffering still goes on.

The time has come to part, my love

    I must go away

I leave you now, my darling girl,

    No longer can I stay.
