Fixtures in 2003, 2008, and 19th C Glasgow

925

The mind is a remarkable thing.  If you ask around, you’ll find Celtic fans tell you we played Boavista in the Uefa Cup semi-final in Porto on the Thursday night, before going to Ibrox on the Saturday (it was the Sunday).

Similarly, Barry Ferguson is mumping his gums without restrain today, complaining about Rangers fixtures in May 2008.  Rangers were due to play a ridiculous number of games in May due to qualifying for the Scottish Cup and Uefa Cup finals, while catching up on postponed fixtures.

The SPL decided to accommodate them by extending the league programme until two days before the Scottish Cup final.  This final was on the last possible date before clubs were ordered to release players for that year’s Uefa European Championships, which started 14 days later.

This season has echoes of 2008 but nothing more.  Whereas clubs would have been forbidden from using certain players after the date of the Scottish Cup final in 2008, under current proposals for this year, the second bottom club from the Premiership and qualifier from the Championship will need to retain a number of players beyond their contract end date of 31 May.

Retaining players beyond 31 May will cost clubs money, and players could theoretically refuse to extend their season by a few days, which is this season’s problem.  2008’s problem was a hard deadline imposed by Uefa with no extensions possible.  The decision was out of the SPL’s hands.

Great article on the club site today marking Br. Walfrid’s passing and the struggles faced by our forefathers in the late 19th Century.  The news that the Foundation are feeding 500 of Glasgow’s homeless today continues the momentum from Wednesday night.  Well done to all involved.

    Bgx – I reckon it will be a useful way out for King. He can claim he tried but the unseen fenian hand stopped him! I don’t think he was ever really serious once he realised he couldn’t get it all on the cheap.

    Shame. I think he’d have been great for the rest of Scottish football

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Lots of powerful people hide one hand, when posing for a selfie/photo, does the “unseen fenian hand” derive from that?
    Anyone know the roots of the ufh?
    I have had a first hand account from a close friend of an SPL ref, just after ” Dougie, Dougie”. It detailed how the cabal cover their tracks. It remains as it was in Jocks day , we need to be 3 up before we can relax. As for HIbs, QoS and the rest….they have no chance in the play offs.
    might be a different name, but same location,
    late 80’s , my uncle michael , huge celtic fan who had fallen a little by the wayside, due to liking a tipple, decided he wanted to go to game.
    we kept him off it , all the way from the port till we turned into the gallowgate.
    michael decided, now he knew were we were to get off the bus and hit the first pub.
    right there.
    i was dispatched to look after him.
    at least 300 people in that wee pub.
    we were in the pub 10 minutes, when all hell broke lose as 3 guys attacked the pub with swords and machetes to kill a guy that grassed them up.
    everyone bolted for the toilets, we locked in a cubicle. nearly greetin.
    after a while it went quiet, and we all got out , passing the handless guy on the floor.
    michael sobered up.
    i stopped greetin.
    we beat hearts maybe 2-0
    next mornings SUNDAY MAIL had front page pcitures and story.
    surprisingly, no witnesses,
    barman was quoted as saying “quiet for a saturday”
  4. Just plonked my arse on the couch after getting back from Ireland.
    Today I took the Minx to Milltown Cemetery and we stood together before the graves of Bobby Sands, Pearce Jordon, Francis Ryan, Maried Farrell, Sean Savage, Dan McCann, Kieran Docherty, Thomas Begley, Crip McWilliams, Joe McCann and a multitude of others I’ve either heard about or read about.
    We then strolled the hundred or so yards to The Felons and had a drink and a bite to eat. For those of you who don’t know, The Felons on the Falls Rd was a pub that originally only allowed entry to those who’d served time for the Rebublican movement. It’s different from when I first visited it and daft Scottish people are even allowed in now!
    We’ve been to Derry where we gazed upon the brutality of the Brit army when they murderered 14 innocent civilians and wounded many more. We got to stand at Free Derry corner, the iconic image now world renowned and read about Motorman and how the Brit army tried to destroy an entire community.
    We visited Belleek. A town I’d read about where IRA volunteer Joe MacManus was killed in action. We had a few pints and an old man at the bar informed me that for him there was and is no border when I went to pay and hadn’t realised that we’d travelled back into the North. He told me that he’d never left ‘Ireland’ though constitutionally he lives in Britain.
    All of this happened while I’ve met a man that has touched me more than most others I’ve ever known.
    His name is Billy Kerr.
    Billy is a Rangers man and he’s very high up in the Masons. He’s also a convert to the Catholic faith.
    Billy is possibly the funniest, most honest, most decent man I’ve ever met.
    Billy is also dying. He has terminal cancer.
    This is nae a post about condolences because Billy is still alive for now.
    I’d love the time and the chance to talk to Billy and find out his thinking.
    I might not get that opportunity, that’s how bad things are, but I know that in Billy Kerr, no matter his allegiances, I’ve been blessed to shake his hand.
    It’s a weird thing because on the day we visited Derry, Billy was too unwell to walk ‘Derry’s Walls’ which he’d hoped to do. I genuinely felt for him.
    A strange few days but I wouldn’t swap meeting Billy Kerr for anything.
    How very strange. And how very wonderful.
    A good point for Vale,could be important at the end of the season. I’d have preferred three,but that’s because I want Swindon promoted!
  7. Bgx – sadly still applies. I’ll be glad when the rebel songs of all kinds are no more than historical reference…..
    I’ll never be glad to be fighting the same fight I was fighting when I started out!
    I too have visited the Graves of those you mention.
    Billy Kerr sounds like some and a Character, may God watch over him, now and in Heaven when he goes there.
    Keep the Faith!
    Hail Hail!
  9. jmccormick,
    It is terrible, there are many excellent Scottish Referees out there who don’t stand a chance.
    There are at least a few who shouldn’t be anywhere near that level, marks being the Grading system.
    The worst of it all, the SFA seems to be highly represented at Uefa. That is the Brotherhood from the pit of Hell.
    Collina was a genuine superstar of Refereeing, and Dallas is a great friend. The Media can really work dark magic.
    You sure know how to pack a month into a few days-sounds like you both had a great time!
    And sober enough to remember Felons this time…
  11. the unseen fenian hand was a hun term for all the ills that befell them.
    sometime around 2009 i think it started.
  15. Hamiltontim,
    Powerful post.
    You took the dear Lady to the Felons for the Irish stew frae Gearoid, an excellent place to take any Lady, imo.
    Billy, I hope HT gets you on CQN.
    Youre Welcome.
    You make good points. I am unable to say much more , betraying confidences is not worth it. However we all suspect/ know that jobs for the boys is front and centre of every failed business model. Our day will come, the fact that the poster boys for the establishment have quickened their own demise may well accelerate the day….I am always hopeful. The Collina/ ;Dallas axis is a strange one…..who gets more out of that?
