Fixtures in 2003, 2008, and 19th C Glasgow

925

The mind is a remarkable thing.  If you ask around, you’ll find Celtic fans tell you we played Boavista in the Uefa Cup semi-final in Porto on the Thursday night, before going to Ibrox on the Saturday (it was the Sunday).

Similarly, Barry Ferguson is mumping his gums without restrain today, complaining about Rangers fixtures in May 2008.  Rangers were due to play a ridiculous number of games in May due to qualifying for the Scottish Cup and Uefa Cup finals, while catching up on postponed fixtures.

The SPL decided to accommodate them by extending the league programme until two days before the Scottish Cup final.  This final was on the last possible date before clubs were ordered to release players for that year’s Uefa European Championships, which started 14 days later.

This season has echoes of 2008 but nothing more.  Whereas clubs would have been forbidden from using certain players after the date of the Scottish Cup final in 2008, under current proposals for this year, the second bottom club from the Premiership and qualifier from the Championship will need to retain a number of players beyond their contract end date of 31 May.

Retaining players beyond 31 May will cost clubs money, and players could theoretically refuse to extend their season by a few days, which is this season’s problem.  2008’s problem was a hard deadline imposed by Uefa with no extensions possible.  The decision was out of the SPL’s hands.

Great article on the club site today marking Br. Walfrid’s passing and the struggles faced by our forefathers in the late 19th Century.  The news that the Foundation are feeding 500 of Glasgow’s homeless today continues the momentum from Wednesday night.  Well done to all involved.

Roy, even more great photos bringing back a lot of memories

the dry fiery Hampden pitch when we beat Hibs (George Best an all) in the 1980 semi final

Joe Craig’s goals from the 1977 semi final. There was a big ramay in the North enclosure just after the second half started and went on for about ten minutes. Joe’s first goal that night was a nice daisy cutter across the keeper.

The centenary season semi final victory still is my favourite. Cooming back from one nil down (an honest mistake if ever there was one) , Dingus McGhee’s equaliser and the euphoria which follwed and andy w’s winner a minute later wow wow and wow. Magical memeories and possibly Frank McAvennie’s least effrective performance for us.

Your photo posted last week of Danny scoring against Killie in 1983 got me thinking of games I was lucky to be at with dad or pals when Danny scored.

Against Clyde 1973 at Celtic. We lost Brian McLaughlin after Wullie McVie’s vicious assault on him during that game.

Queen of the South in a cup game at Celtic Park .

Recreation Park against Alloa in 1982 possibly

and the best of the lot, his thirty five yard shot against Hibs in a three one victory at Celtic Park in April or May 1979.

I hope Danny still has a job with us working with the players.

It’s no coincedence that we meet certain unlikely people who leave a mark on us,that runs deeper than words can do justice.

    Good night all

  7. Hilarious stuff. The English chatterati believe that the SNP want to move Labour to the left. That beats all. Imo, the SNP are acting like the Lib Dems have for years: say what you like, as you won’t have any responsiblity after the Election. The SNP have shown no socialist credentials in Holyrood: the very opposite, imo.

I would never divulge your political affiliations but you know that mine are opposed to yours. What I will say is that regardless of the country, I’d stand by your side pal.

My post wasn’t so much about Irish politics but about my confusion about meeting a man whose background is the very antithesis of what I am, yet who has touched me so profoundly.

Anyways, I hope you’re well missy.

Couldn’t agree more. The best Celtic side ever and the best Celtic strip ever. The simplest designs are often the best. I sometimes think strip designers these days are trying too hard to be different.

  13. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

    Roy, thank you.

The pictures you post remind me of why I am a Celtic supporter. Going to games with my dad but he couldn’t go eventually because of his arthritic hips and couldn’t stand at games. My former parish priest, the late big Mick O’Connell, taking some parishioners to games then going to games with my pals.

Great times and some not great times following our team throughout Scotland.

  14. Hi

Fellow Tims i hpoe you dont mind me posting an email sent to me today by the Lib Dems?

    Brian —

In the next few days, your postal vote will be arriving for the General Election. Before it does, I wanted to send you a quick note with 5 simple reasons you should vote Liberal Democrat when it does:

We’ve cut your income tax by £800 and we want to increase that to £1,200.

We’ve given pensioners record pension rises and we’ll guarantee that continues.

We’ve created 174,000 jobs and will keep the economic recovery on the right track.

We have protected the UK health budget and we’ll £800m in the Scottish NHS.

We have – and will continue to transfer more powers from Scotland to London.

I hope you’ll vote Liberal Democrat when your postal vote arrives.

    Willie Rennie

    Can you spot the mistake??

    I will post their correction..
