Flag ban feels provocative

1033

It all seems a bit cloak and dagger to suggest that pyrotechnics are smuggled into football grounds inside flags and banners.  I’d always assumed the ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique would have been the delivery mechanism, not that I’ve any experience of the subject.

Flares have been an increasing menace at football games across the UK in recent years, including earlier this season at a Europa League qualifying game at McDiarmid Park, which passed off without mention in the media, but police have previously limited their interventions to lectures and the occasional arrest.

Football clubs are dependent on Police Scotland for safety licenses for games, and in their wisdom, the police have determined this action will remove one method of entering a stadium with pyrotechnics and discharging them without detection.  The ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique remains, as does ‘light it while pretending to tie your laces’.  Jumpers and tie-up shoes are the real enemy here.

This is an arbitrary over-reaction to the criticism Police Scotland came under for failing to properly police the vandalism at Fir Park, it will not prevent anyone intent on letting off flares inside a football ground from doing so.  Over-reacting after under-policing is a well-known phenomenon.  Going after flags and banners feels provocative. Coincidence?

You’re likely to find out if you’re in a provocative mood on Thursday; Police Scotland will know that provoking a crowd seldom quietens things down.  The reaction to Fir Park made me hopeful that we’d seen the last flare from the Celtic support, now who knows? We’re deep in muscle flexing territory here.

I have mentioned it regularly,we have the worst PR department I have witnessed.Thats the reason every incident ,large or small becomes a crisis. No communication whatsoever from Celtic to the fans. They are still living in the age they think the fans actually believe what they read in “The Celtic Pravda”.

It has become blindingly obvious that Celtic agreed to this ban .Got wind of the furore of the fans then made a total erchie of it trying to patch up a peace deal.In agreeing to the ban in the first place, they were totally out of order, without informing the fans first.Just what right has anyone to let people buy tickets for any event, then tell them the rules and regs after.Just anotherbow of the head and tug of the forelock,to anyone ore any official body hammering Celtic fans.

  2. All it would take was for Celtic to say that if this ban goes ahead, they will refuse to take an allocation for ALL away games next season. Peer pressure will be so great they’ll turn around quicker than an orange cat getting chased oot the chapel.

  3. Kitalba.. i dont know about the others but i know what JS said about certain songs many decades ago. We still hear their like today even though the only man to make us champions of europe asked the fans not to sing them. Now the current manager is asking fans to behave but a minority just cant help themselves. Ban flags for 1 game is a much better option than someone possibly getting injured from pyros. We have had pyros at a euro game at CP, seat damage and pyros at fir park, trouble in amsterdam (not our fault) and one of my friends was attacked by fellow fans at CP at the karagandy game in front of his 12yr old son

Theres a sinister element appearing among our support and its not the fault of the board, PL, the police or the SNP.

We had a trouble free 80,000 at seville a decade ago but we cant take 3000 to fir park now without bother.

We need to be above reproach these days and all this baggage allows us to be attacked from all sides.

Get back to supporting the team the way we did in seville.

Thanks, for the compliment and as you would see, I was open to any fraternal organisation being examined.

My own little knowledge of the KSC is that they do not have oaths that demand fraternal preference like the Masons or bias against other religious denominations like the Orange Order, but the parliament should examine whatever they think causes a problem.

Norway has done this and demands their judges declare membership of one organisation only, Freemasons. I don’t think the OO have walks in Oslo.

    It certainly does…..!!!!!!!

I really don’t know what to think…..hopefully, it will be clarified soon……if the authorities want to stop smoke bombs etc, and they are right to do so, banning flags is not going to contribute to that……in fact, if that’s all they can come up with, God help us…!!…….and why only the Celtic game…..strange……as Paul67 states “Flag ban feels provocative” ……. Will be best for me not to comment further until all the facts are clear…HH

This is a load of crap based on ignorance.

The post of an SLO is a UEFA requirement under their Fair Play rules. Celtic HAD to appoint one .

  11. tonydonnelly67, as ever, speaks a lot of sense. We need to screw the nut here. We are open to attack whatever we do. I think we should say that we will boycott the fixture and demand a refund for any supporter who has already bought a ticket. I think we should further inform all and sundry that if similar conditions are laid down for any further games we will boycott those venues too. The only concern I have is that some of the high heid yins in the polis are happy if we do as it might bring down other clubs just like their wee favourite which died when it was liquidated.

By the bye, why does no one in the ole media mention the “l” word (as if I didn’t know)? The most they can bring themselves to say is that the deid team went into administration.

  12. mighty tim supporting wee Oscar on

    Good morning all.

Not sure where to begin with all this flag business in fact my head is bursting with it all. For what it’s worth my take on it is this.

If Celtic were complicit in banning our support from taking flags and banners to the St Johnstone game then there is something fundamentally wrong in the corridors of power at Celtic Park. They must have known that the supporters would react to this and see it as clear victimisation of our support from an all to willing police force. In my opinion whoever made this decision should be sacked no matter how high up the pecking order they sit.

If someone unbelievably called the wrong club about lifting the ban sack this incompetent fool.

Now if and I hope this is the truth that no one from Celtic had anything to do with this ban then the Celtic Board must come out now in the strongest terms and defend our support to the hilt. They also need to ask the questions of the police why it is only our support that are being systematically targeted. Why did they (police scotland) not target Aberdeen fans wrecking seats at Celtic Park or Motherwell fans doing likewise at Hamilton. Is it one rule for us and one for all others. Never mind the weekly songs and banners on display carried out by a third tier football club.

What I do know is that I love Celtic but if the board do not stand shoulder to shoulder with our support on this then I am not sure that the board of Celtic see my club the way I do and I would then question my support of the board not the team.

I gave up travelling to away games a long time ago my last away game was Seville however I would suggest that to all our Bhoys and Ghirls who do travel to the away games seriously consider attending this game. Starve any club who support a ban on your flags and banners of your hard earned cash. Starve the police of your hard earned cash and if our club are complicit in this then starve them also. By all means go to Celtic Park and support the team but do not buy anything from their outlets.

If you do go to this game on Thursday then be an example of how a support should be sing Celtic songs cheer on our Bhoys but absolutely no flares or pyros please. Do not give the police smsm sfa government or even our own people on the board another stick to beat us.

I have spoken with Chloe, our Duty Manager at our Perth Extra store today and she has advised that this statement is not true.

The Police have visited the store asking for them not to sell any alcohol to the supporters. We have objected to this but we have agreed to place restrictions on the amount of alcohol that a supporter can purchase at one time.

I hope this has been helpful.

  19. Robcfc11:

Songs have no part in the equation, you brought songs into the equation.

My question is a simple question, you have but one single pound in your pocket, just a pound, a modest pound, you can give that pound to those who know you well but hate and despise all that you ever were, all that you are, all that you will ever be, or you can give that pound to a starving child and mother (don’t worry about the father, he’s out there eating grubs and lizard shit) it’d called Mary’s meals. You pound will keep a kid alive for a month.

I can’t speak for Jock Stein, but I’d love to think that Jock Stein would love the kids were fed.

Do you think you can speak for Jock Stein?

  20. Kitalba.. the point is relevant re songs.. one of our greats asked us not to do it but the fans ignored him. The current board and manager have asked fans to behave and they are also being ignored. Some fans are stirring trouble within our support and they need to be identified and removed. We are all being targetted because of these morons and are guilty by association in the eyes of the authorities.

I do agree that we own that pound but are we allowing a moronic minority to dictate how we follow our team ? Really ?

They are the effin problem here.. look at the root cause and not the current ‘solution’

  21. Auldhied,

I think your being a tad hard on Turkeybhoy, you are quite correct that it was a requirement that we had to appoint a SLO but he has been working with his hands tied behind his back.

The club seems to be implementing a cleansing policy of anything that they think is offensive, JPT is doing his best but there are rumblings that he is getting absolutely no support from his bosses inside CP, only rumours mind.

I have made my mind up anyway if nothing changes by the end of the season that’s it for me no more money is going into Scottish football, and on my supporters club bhoys that have went for 20 years plus middle of the road types of guys are of the same mind.

We are in very very dangerous waters and it seems the club dont care!

    HH

  22. Not a solution by any means but if things go unchecked and unchanged perhaps two phone calls by enough people will cause a rethink.

Call one to St Johnstone requesting ticket refund, nice lady I spoke to yesterday said they would do so, ( she also said Police Scotland approached the club to take this stance but who knows)

Call two to Celtic FC demanding a refund on balance of season book not yet used. This will only work if fans, in numbers, do this so maybe a coordinated effort via CSCs would do the trick.

Fans can later walk up on the day if they so choose but, by God, even PL would get the message that we are sick if being used and abused by all and sundry – including the board. Attendance figures would be interesting then.

Happy Christmas to Paul67 and all in this site.

Let’s hope next year we may be discussing football rather than our growing disenchantment within our ranks at the way the club are treating their own.

Btw, Call two is the more important one, IMO.

  24. gebhoy.. I think the club does care about the vast majority of the support who can behave and care enough about our reputation to try and do something about this sickness. They care enough to want the decent majority to go to games and be safe from these cretins and their pyros.

I enjoyed your post yesterday about the Callaghan family in the Garngad at the time of the European Cup Final in Lisbon.

I was born in The Garngad and my father worked in the Caley so the already excellent story had even more of a connection for me ( and my brother-in-, whom I sit with at the Home games, is named Callaghan). Incidentally, it was only about ten years ago that I realised The Caley was not its real name! No one, absolutely no one, ever referred to it as The Caledonian Rail Works (?) 0:-)

Maybe, just maybe, much as I loved what JockStein did for Celtic, just maybe the Celtic Supports ethos was grater than Jock Stein’s ethos.

And true as my God is judge as a twelve year old in Amsterdam after Ajax beat us 3 – 0 looking in my eyes, face to face when I asked Jock Stein for his autograph in the foyer of the Kransnipolsky Hotel Jock Stein had but two words for me.

It was not my post, I copied and pasted it, just like some copy and paste the words of the Daily Record.

  28. Kitalba.. Celtic fans singing about republicanism is more important than Celtic FC to some fans ? Is that what is implied in your last post ?

  29. Will I be able to wear my cape to the St Stephens stitch up or will that action contravene some spurious new stadium rule or break a fictionally offended police officers interpretation of what constitutes behaviour that allows them to breach my rights.

  30. These pyro devices are not bombs . Bombs are full of explosives. The pryos just give off what is supposed to be non-toxic smoke. At Glastenbury for instance ,in an enclosed space, (a marquee) packed full of hundreds of music fans the bands set off such smoke devices. There seems to be a hysterical over-reaction about them . I’m think they have them at Murrayfield for the rugby internationals. The teams appear from the billowing smoke.
