Flag ban feels provocative

1033

It all seems a bit cloak and dagger to suggest that pyrotechnics are smuggled into football grounds inside flags and banners.  I’d always assumed the ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique would have been the delivery mechanism, not that I’ve any experience of the subject.

Flares have been an increasing menace at football games across the UK in recent years, including earlier this season at a Europa League qualifying game at McDiarmid Park, which passed off without mention in the media, but police have previously limited their interventions to lectures and the occasional arrest.

Football clubs are dependent on Police Scotland for safety licenses for games, and in their wisdom, the police have determined this action will remove one method of entering a stadium with pyrotechnics and discharging them without detection.  The ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique remains, as does ‘light it while pretending to tie your laces’.  Jumpers and tie-up shoes are the real enemy here.

This is an arbitrary over-reaction to the criticism Police Scotland came under for failing to properly police the vandalism at Fir Park, it will not prevent anyone intent on letting off flares inside a football ground from doing so.  Over-reacting after under-policing is a well-known phenomenon.  Going after flags and banners feels provocative. Coincidence?

You’re likely to find out if you’re in a provocative mood on Thursday; Police Scotland will know that provoking a crowd seldom quietens things down.  The reaction to Fir Park made me hopeful that we’d seen the last flare from the Celtic support, now who knows? We’re deep in muscle flexing territory here.

Oh, what fun it used to be, to beat the bhuns on New Year ‘s Day …… How good does THAT sound……..

  4. I back the board, pl, and the team, on an every day bases in here as most of you know, on this St J game, two mistakes have been made, Celtic agreeing to the ban ( if they did) and calling ICT ( and it looks like they did) someone’s has to put there hand up here and start giving out some answers, but what I do think here is this game on Thursday should be a no go area, it’s to late now the dye has been cast, because what St J and match commander Lynch think about us (celtic supporters) is there for all to see, PS will now make it a point as to what they think of us when we get there on Thursday, and will be tooled up for the occasion, there will be uniformed men from all over Scotland falling over themselves to volunteer for the shift on Boxing Day make no mistake about that, I take this as a personal attack on our supporters, not the club they have made a complete arse of this self inflicted, and a few of you in here would not have thought you would see me posting that!, but when I think they are wrong I will have my opinion on it and post it, as I said it’s to late now this ship has sailed, I am not one for boycotting, BUT, when someone starts telling you the rules in there house that you can not do or what you can not bring, but others who come and visit CAN do these things, and if you do any of these things that you normally do in other grounds, I will get the polis to arrest you, and the polis WILL arrest you, why would I want to be some where , no one wants me to be?

  7. This whole flag ban has been a farce from the off, who ever thought of it needs a boot in the haw maws and who ever phoned ICT instead of St Johnstone needs the same that’s how daft it got yesterday when people are phoning the wrong club and they worry about the fans …… HH

    —————————————————————-

For the ban to make any sense, which ofcourse it doesn’t, it would have to be imposed/agreed for the ICT match as well and a few away matches after that as well. If this co-incided with no pyros then PS could claim their strtegy worked and lift the ban for later away matches.

The only good thing to come out of this is that “Only an Excuse” might actually be funny this Hogmanay…but only if they find the actual transcript of the call from CP to ICT.

Who gave the dr this story…..?……..is it possible Celtic phoned ICT to check they weren’t imposing a ban (or had received an instruction to do so)……and on checking with ICT, the dr discovered Celtic had already called them…….but the dr twisted the truth for a juicy story ….. re the 5 way agreement you asked me was I referring to the SPL 5 way agreement, or the SFL way agreement. I have three different copies of the agreement but cannot differentiate between any that would lead me to consider one to be an SPL agreement as opposed an SFL agreement.

Could you explain to me what was the difference?

As an exiled Scot and Celtic supporter for more than 50 years, I never thought I would say this, but I would encourage our fans to stay away from this game.

It is a massive trap being laid by PS: flags or no flags.

Celtic fans are being taken to the cleaners.

There is only one reason for this, and that is to “even the score” because of the on-going train crash down Govan way.

No other club’s supporters are being mistreated like ours.

Unfortunately and inexplicably, for whatever reason, our club has chosen this period in our proud history to abandon its supporters.

No matter what botched-up comprise might be agreed today, just don’t go.

Support the Celts with friends and family at home or in the pub.

  16. The pound in your pocket is a pound in your pocket. It is not in the pocket of your detractors. If you chose to not go to away Celtic games, local economies will take a hit. Police will not get their overtime rates. Bus companies will suffer, far flung Tesco booze isles will be the very quiet. Pies which were baked will rot, pubs that will have pre-ordered their barrels will be sweating at the sell by dates. And other SPL teams ability to meet their bills will be reduced.

I don’t want anybody to feel the pinch but if they don’t stand up for us, rightly or wrongly – they are against us.

The pound in your pocket is the most potent weapon you have. Celtic are going to be abused, are you the one who will pay towards Celtic being abused?

It is your choice, your choice alone, it is your pound and it is your Celtic.

Tink about the number of away supporters who turn up at Celtic Park…

  20. Who ever agreed to the original ban at Celtic needs to be sacked. They do not have the authority to do so unless it is agreed by CEO Lawwell.

Assuming the papers stories are correct the whoever made the mistakes needs to be reprimanded for incompetence.

If Lawwell agreed to the original ban on flags , he should resign as he is totally out of touch and as sleekit as a the rookie manager over the city.

Police Scotland need to take a step back. It’s becoming gestapo like the behaviour if the Police towards Celtic fans. Campbell Corrigan praised the sectarian hordes after 90 minutes of bile at the league cup final. The SNP enjoyed the WATP tunes with foot stamping Kenny McCaskill joining in the praise of the sectarian ibrox song sheet.

When Police Scotland are given an opportunity to act on Celtic fans they don’t hesitate with the 6am Dawn raids for young fans later found to be innocent. I don’t read of the same ferocity in the newspapers to deal with the numerous drug dealers across Scotland that are well known to the public.

It seems if Police Scotland have their priorities upside down. Robust searches for flags at a football march versus whatever passes for their policy on drugs. I pretty certain a cursory glance at certain clubs would produce an interesting haul versus the robust search.

I cannot remember a football march anywhere in the world having a flag ban with robust searches. This is driven from the top in Police Scotland and with their track record on party singing its no surprise.

Celtic need to come out and state they do not support the ban and it’s a harassment of their supporters.

The Perth officer Kevin Lynch is only the messenger and is being used. The orders came from the top and he is just delivering the message. The police need to remember they are public servants paid by the taxpayer not an independent militia who can do what they want.

  21. 67Heaven:

Mate I don’t give a toss about the hun, I care about Celtic, if Celtic do the best for the best then I’ll never worry about any other club in the world.

Too many on here refer to Rangers as a dead club but obsess with them. I get a little confused sometimes, if they are dead then they are dead, but there is a hun team in Scotland called Rangers playing in Scotland nonetheless.

  28. Canny work oot the logic from various fans when they say

“bhoycott them, that’ll hit them in the pocket.”

Hit who in the pocket ? STJFC ? Why ? What have they done ?

Is it the fault of STJFC that – the Celtic ‘customers’ don’t have a ‘bored’

who’ll fight the corner of the Celtic ‘customers’ ?

If anybody should be ‘bhoycotted’ it’s the Celtic ‘bored’ imo.

But, the Celtic ‘bored’ are protected by a number of brainwashed happy-clappers

a, diminishing number it has to be said – who’ll proudly sport their blindfolds and try

to, positively spin any crumbs that fall from the ‘boreds’ table – blindly ignoring the

ever increasing amount of empty seats, previously occupied by fans without blindfolds

who have, slowly but, surely been sickened Off oot the stadium. imo

All of these ‘convenient’ smokescreens – broken seats / flag bans etc….have allowed

the management team to walk away from the fact that – Celtic were skelped up n doon

the CL group, having barely scraped their way into it by the skin of their teeth after, having

sold the spine of the team and making a – powder-puff attempt at replacing it. imo

Also, getting pumped oot the League cup by Morton was grounds for a sacking imo.

What with the manager failing yet again to learn from mistakes – just like last year when he thought he could swagger onto the CL last 16 stage and, play 3 strikers v’s Juve – he did the same agin v’s Milan at CP ?

All these smoke-screens off the pitch shouldny cloud the fact that – theres a lot wrong ‘ON’ the pitch either. imo
