Flag ban feels provocative

1033

It all seems a bit cloak and dagger to suggest that pyrotechnics are smuggled into football grounds inside flags and banners.  I’d always assumed the ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique would have been the delivery mechanism, not that I’ve any experience of the subject.

Flares have been an increasing menace at football games across the UK in recent years, including earlier this season at a Europa League qualifying game at McDiarmid Park, which passed off without mention in the media, but police have previously limited their interventions to lectures and the occasional arrest.

Football clubs are dependent on Police Scotland for safety licenses for games, and in their wisdom, the police have determined this action will remove one method of entering a stadium with pyrotechnics and discharging them without detection.  The ‘stick it up your jumper’ technique remains, as does ‘light it while pretending to tie your laces’.  Jumpers and tie-up shoes are the real enemy here.

This is an arbitrary over-reaction to the criticism Police Scotland came under for failing to properly police the vandalism at Fir Park, it will not prevent anyone intent on letting off flares inside a football ground from doing so.  Over-reacting after under-policing is a well-known phenomenon.  Going after flags and banners feels provocative. Coincidence?

You’re likely to find out if you’re in a provocative mood on Thursday; Police Scotland will know that provoking a crowd seldom quietens things down.  The reaction to Fir Park made me hopeful that we’d seen the last flare from the Celtic support, now who knows? We’re deep in muscle flexing territory here.

Big Nan. St Vincent de Paul, really. I’m gobsmacked, just goes to show what you have been up against all this time. On the plus side though it means they are taking your petition seriously.

As far as I remember the SVDP is very much parish-based and pretty autonomous. This has advantages and disadvantages. I’m talking from real ignorance here but I think that they ought get more involved in the food bank movement.

My first trip to Milford, Donegal was when I was 4……remember most of it to this day……

  11. Here’s the thing…. how many posts start with that?

Somebody, sorry I can’t remember who, made a crackin post a couple of weeks ago on what Celtic meant to them. To me, it was the perfect balance between being open to all, whilst avoiding the bland “just a football club” mentality. That guy put it far more eloquently than I ever could.

This tolerance is important: we will disagree, argue, and sometimes get out of hand…. but life is too short for real enmity. I would ask for one thing, one piece of tolerance; that my view of Celtic as a symbol of my people be respected and understood.

Whether you like it or not, Celtic was established as an immigrant totem – there is nothing wrong with that. If this club had been founded by any immigrants other than Irish, it would be supported, fawned over and utilised by politicians as an example of multiculturalism.

You may support Celtic for other reasons, in some ways better reasons than mine. I respect yours… respect mine.

  12. Have to say this place is on fire tonight

Some great posts and dare I say it quite a sense of unity.

Certainly about Police: Scotland, should’ve called it Police:Celtic

  13. DD….thanks for the endorsement.

Still too many people getting worked up.

    1. Get the money together for a legal fund

    2. Force police scotland into court and explain themselves publicly

    3. Force police scotland to comply with and enforce law, not make it up as they go along

    4. Starve the away games of money…….without it they die and we can then go elsewhere to play our football (UEFA)

    5. Make them accountable…..from messers salmon all the way down to messers house.

    Fight smart not hard…….

    My money is waiting…..is yours?

While I am for Scottish Independence in principal the behaviour of the SNP led Scottish Government over issues such as this is alienating voters………certainly the cohort I belong to.

Wither the political leadership and correct application of the law in Scotland from its Edinburgh capital?

How they can be hooked in to the same classification as the freemasons…. mibbe SCIAF’s next.

It only takes five minutes research to establish this, why would this SNP tube come out with this? You can reasonably conclude that he’s a tit, fud, walloper, rocket, and dick.

I should be a scientist, you see what I could create out of that lot?

  18. If the club have any sense they will cease this opportunity to unite with the fans , and fight this crazy ban.

Cheers, you have made my day. according to that link the page doesn’t exist. One page today tomorrow the paper.

  20. If it sais on the ticket for the game, no banners or flags to be taken by the holder of this ticket into Mcd. Park, then that’s it you don’t and can’t do it, if it Doesent say that on the ticket, then no one can stop you, except here they will and it’s going to be a problem, it’s all right having a laugh and joke about it, as I said earlier this didn’t sit right with me yesterday, and it’s even worse this evening, the more this guy Lynch pops his head up, I can actually feel his anger and fury, this guy is acting like the original jobs worth, and he is going to have his cops well tooled up on Thursday, it’s alright saying cops are ok at away games, and there’s never any bother, and they prob. Are, and there prob. Isn’t, obviously I hope I am totally wrong here, but there’s some thing strange going on here it just Doesent sit well with me.

  21. It is clear that celtic agreed to this ban and have been frightened by the reaction of the support. If st Johnstone and the police demand it is upheld them celtic should refuse to play. And make their disgust clear.

That would unite us. Over to you celtic.

  22. Anyone still disagree with me from p.6 that the McDiarmid pyro-flag debacle has got nothing to do with safety and is just a symptom of national anti Celtic bias?

  23. Tell you what though..today does give a glimpse of what an away boycott by Celtic supporters could do. Money talks! BS walks!
