Football must wait for the financial final act

703

Interesting financial news from Deloitte that FA Premier League clubs turned a profit in season 2013-14, the first time the combined results of the top 20 clubs in England have been in the black for 15 years.  The reason for the £190m surplus was a 29% increase in revenue, largely as a result of the-then new TV deal, which runs until summer 2016.  Wages rose only 20% that year.

Clubs will be happy to have stemmed the losses, although the first year of a new TV deal is always their high water mark, but the underlying bubble remains a problem.  Income cannot continue to rise at heady double-digit rates, shareholders of BskyB and BT will eventually see to that, despite the fact that next big boost from TV is already confirmed for season 2016-17.

The play to watch is not if or when a dysfunctional football sector gets its act in order, it’s when an almost-as dysfunctional broadcasting industry reaches equilibrium.  We’ve discussed before Sky’s absolute need for Premier League rights to secure their place as a prime broadcaster.  BT, Virgin, Netflix and others are busy eating into their movie, news and entertainment broadcast market.  It’s this need which is driving revenue towards the English Premier League.  Without English Premier League football, Sky are vulnerable.

Sky took the first step towards passing the financial pain of their new deal down the line to consumers this month in the form of a price increase.  The company have successfully done this before, many low income families are now paying £70 per month for satellite TV, and subscriber losses after previous increases have been almost non-existent.

Millions of people have high stakes skin in this game: subscribers, Sky and BT executives, their respective shareholders, Premier League clubs and the dependent ecosystem below them.  All the spinning plates have remained in the air, despite price increases through a recession, but one fundamental remains:

This is a bubble.

Speculators are confused when they only see a market inflate over a long period that it’s not a bubble.  The moment these TV deals become unaffordable to subscribers, or more likely, to the broadcasters, the bubble will burst.

Debts are high, profitability is here, but the underlying commercial pressures to stay in the league remain, so wage pressure will continue to eat away at available funds.  Those outside of the bonanza have to figure out how to compete for audience and players, while waiting on the final act.

    thats spooky

all this talk of me thinking of leaving virgin, and all of a sudden beardy Branson appears in the advert bar at the bottom of the page telling me how much faster Virgin broadband is

Ok King Richard The Beard, i bow before you and will continue to part with my cash in your direction

    Depends on your area.

If you’re served by BT Infinity, the broadband speed is exceptional, although I see you’re on Virgin’s cable already, so there won’t by any noticeable difference.

If you’re not served by infinity, you’ll get a regular wire connection, with speeds between 2 and 8 Mbps, which you’ll get scunnered with very quickly.

At the moment, BT provide the BT Sports channels as part of the deal with landline and broadband. You also get free BT wifi which can be useful when out and about.

Dunno though what other channels they have access to.

With the main broadcasting players integrating their landline, broadband and mobile offerings, there are some good deals out there, but I don’t think anyone can offer a full selection of content.

Best give ’em a call, or just use the chat function on their site, but the absolutely critical thing is…

…do they offer Infinity in your area.

    If not, stick with Virgin.

JFH, with you on that. I feel that you will always emerge from the other side a stronger person.

Dexter, I binned Sky some time ago and don’t regret it, I do however have access to it by other means, when I want, that I do not pay for (not illegal). They keep phoning me but when I tell them that it is a matter of principle and I object to the obscene amount of money being spent on the EPL when there are millions starving on this planet they give up the conversation because the can’t offer me a deal to undercut a competitor. You quite rightly cite Steven Fletcher, but how many of these overpaid haddies don’t even get the chance to warm a bench?

    Yup indeed.

In our area if you have bt sports (and you don’t have sky) and you don’t have infinity, bt sports can only be watched by using a chromecast.

Actually I’d refute that. I’m on BT and due to my rural location restricted to max 8MB. We almost never watch broadcast telly these days mostly using Netflix. It streams with no buffering pauses at anytime during the day. Including when there are multiple users using the connection for other devices.

I honestly can’t find any real fault with it.

mayanman. Thank you for your prayers I agree it helps to share your problem with another person and that person in my opinion is the one person who can help and that is Our Lord.I find it hard to understand how folks can withstand the pressures of ordinary life if they dont believe. So I am blessed to have Faith.

    Cheers,

I just checked and i can get BT Infinity so might see what they got to offer

im guessing i will also need to pay a 1 off fee to get a BT landline activated but might still pay for itself over the year

Strange I thought my BT inter net problems were behind me but it has crashed twice this morning. I would change but I had to agree to an 18 month deal but after that I will look for a better provider. H.H.

  13. Over last couple of years I have done the following with SKY

    and British Gas.

Go on webpage and in contact us ask

How long am i tied to you and what is it going to cost to leave ?

Thats it. Leave it at that.

Bristish gas gave me £100 if i was with them 6 months later.

Sky phoned me and gave me £50 off for next 6 months roughly

I must be about ready to try again.

  14. Some info on fibre optic cabling which Virgin use and I think BT Infinity as well.

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_fiber

If you want to watch a moving picture on your PC or sent to your TV from it then this is best medium for transfer.

I’ll post shortly some info about what else helps based on a question about Celtic TV I read on KDS.

  15. OH and be aware from next season (I think) SKY has lost

all rights to Champions league football(BT has it) and I presume

    ITV.

As I eat my roasted cheese catching up from last night I see John Park is rumoured to be off to the newest club in Scotland.

Is he right in the heid? Why would you want to go there with all the uncertainty?

Kenny McDowall left Celtic with a good reputation now look at him,the hammer house of horrors does a man no good.

John ,don’t say you weren’t told.

  17. All the talk of sky etc

Im surprised with the success that most online celtic campaigns have such as fundraising for charities or getting songs into the charts that no one has organised a mass cancellation of sky and also a 1 or 2 day (should be everyday) boycott of the usual anti celtic rags.

Would be very interesting to see.

Im sure alot would struggle to go without both full time but a short boycott and the reasons behind them might be enough to make the companies afraid of furthur action.

  19. The biggest problem for most people is using wi-fi for streaming, rather that connecting their streaming device to the modem via the ethernet port.

As I said, I stream HD content over a BT 8mb connection all the time, and it’s fine.

Like you I’m Sticks-bound and have only the regular broadband.

Averages 3mbps, sometimes 4.5, down to 1.5 at peak times.

I find it’s variable – sometimes fine, sometimes erratic.

It’s hopeless when another device in the house is streaming.

The kid starts streaming, the wife stats screaming…

I think I’m close to the local exchange. That helps a lot. I mostly stick above 3mbps. Netflix is optimised for 2mbps. It’s one of the reasons I favour them.

As I mentioned above. Anything that’s going to be streaming a lot ie Xbox is attached directly to the modem.

  23. I have both Sky and BT sport

No Doubt BT will be putting prices up to reflect exclusive rights

And No doubt SKY will brush airbrush over the fact they have lost them

  24. Re Watching Celtic TV (from KDS)

Normally when people complain it is actually due to their side of things…….

Before watching the game, ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date, plus flash etc

Before the game starts turn of your router as this clears the cache and ensures it starts “afresh”

Make sure that your Internet Provider is actually providing you with their promised speeds…………I know you may be paying for 100mbps but are you actually receiving it???

Go to speedtest.net to check your actual download speed.

If all else fails contact webhelp instead of constantly whinging on the wall that nothing is going right for you…….believe me these guys will do what it takes to make sure that you can enjoy the game!!

ps. If when watching the game you are running other programmes which are relying on t’internet shut the sobs* down

    * it is from KDS
