Football rights, an oligopoly working with a closed shop

573

What’s the value of the Scottish Professional League sponsorship package?  It’s whatever the highest bidder is prepared to pay for it.  £4m from Ladbrokes over two years is, therefore, a true value.  It’s down on the previous SPL deal, which was £2m from Clydesdale Bank, as it includes rights to the lower leagues, but this reflects variations in market and product conditions since that deal was signed.

The SPFL chose to go without a sponsor rather than significantly reduce their asking price, believing that it would be difficult to up-bid from a lower position than wait on the market returning to a position closer to the expected value.  As we don’t know what offers they received two years ago, and we’ll never know what subsequent value would have been received, there’s no point even trying to judge that decision.  The most we can say is that despite worries in some places of Armageddon, clearly member clubs believed they had enough in the tank to ride out some years without sponsorship money.

Everything is for sale (Ibrox naming rights for £1, anyone?), but you only take low value deals when you’re in a low value starting position – and there’s no point making moral ‘right or wrong’ judgements about people who make decisions from a poor starting position.

Unlike Scottish football’s broadcast deals, the values of which are determined by an oligopoly, league, shirt and stadium sponsorship is open to a very wide number of potential partners.

The real focus of our angst, should be against the behemoth who own the majority of football TV rights, pays a huge premium for the rights which are critical to its business, while exploiting the large barriers to entry to pay a pittance for Scottish football.

As TV consumers we pay some of the highest subscriber rates in the world as we are part of a very valuable TV market.  Our football clubs operate within the boundaries of this TV market but are excluded from competing in the lucrative section of that market by a closed shop.

An oligopoly working with a closed shop to the detriment of some competitors within the EU.  I cannot believe this is legal.

Bobby Murdoch and Tommy Burns grew up dreaming of being given a chance to play for Celtic. They lived their dreams,we watched them live their dreams.

    We loved them for it.

Too many players nowadays dream of a Ferrari. They too may live their dreams. I doubt they’ll be much-loved for their achievement though.

R I P Bobby and Tommy. You deserve your place in our memories, and now on the walls of Celtic Park.

  3. My favourite Bobby Murdoch moment was his masterclass, and goal, against

    Leeds in 1970.

I also remember TB’S celebration when he scored at ibrox in 2-1 win, showed exactly what it meant to him

My favourite goal was against Dundee; he played a great 1-2 with Charlie Nicholas.

Later in the game Tommy got injured and refused to go off, while he was limping Dundee scored and a game we were cruising through ended up a 2-2 draw.

That was the season DU won the league.

  6. There was a lot of talk of Bobby Murdoch in my house when I was growing up, the Lions of course caused a lot of talk everywhere but my Grandfather loved Bobby, I was there of course with the old man but I was a bit wee to really appreciate his play, as I grew into my own Celticness Tommy Burns was my hero, he lived the dream that was unattainable for me, to stand on the terraces of Celtic Park and watch him play was for me then and still today one of the highlights of my Celtic life.

Rest in Peace Bobby, Rest in Peace Tommy.

What’s are these rumours that the SFA will say that convicted criminal the G&SL as fit and proper?

If so its gone beyond farce.

They say never meet your heroes’,in case you are disappointed,i was lucky enough to meet Bobby and Tommy.True Celts’,if it is possible to be a humble legend, i met 2 of them. They both epitomise what Celtic Football Club is all about.

Back in the 60s, I was standing at the front of the enclosure under the stand. It was the European Cup Winners Cup quarter-final v Slovan Bratislava of Czechoslovakia.

Jimmy Johnstone lay a few yards from me after a crunching tackle. Bobby Murdoch was first to reach him. Bobby crouched down and tended to Jinky before looking up at the defender about 10 yards away. He shook his fist and told the guy what was coming to him. That really impressed me as a bhoy.

Bobby scored the only goal and in the second leg, he again scored to take us through to the semi-finals 2-0.

Bobby was class but was as hard as nails when he had to be and really looked after wee Jimmy.

DAVE KING was on the verge last night of discovering whether or not he’s been given Hampden approval to become the next chairman of Rangers.

Record Sport revealed on Monday the SFA have been waiting to receive one crucial piece of documentation from King’s South African legal team before a final decision on his “fit and proper” status can be made.

Rumours swept the internet that King may have been cleared but a definitive announcement is not expected until next week.

Rangers had hoped to have an answer by now but King’s lawyers have been asked to provide the SFA with documents and mitigation, explaining why their client stayed on Craig Whyte’s board as the club was plunging towards administration and liquidation.

They must also convince the powers that be that King should be given the all-clear despite 41 tax convictions in Johannesburg.

A source said: “The SFA’s been waiting for a document for two weeks and it slowed King’s case up. Things are starting to move again.”

Bobby was also first on the scene after Fergie butted Cesar. There’s a smashing photo of it,like Mackay and Bremner but without the contact.

Fergie knew what was coming. And he also had Bertie to run away from too!

Did you see my reply about Bobby’s No 8 shorts?

  14. I still smile at the memory of Tommy Burns being red-carded at Love Street seconds after being substituted, which meant Celtic played on with 11 men.

  15. Has anyone used a “Thrill Is Gone” pun in connection with the passing of BB King?

    If not…

Sad news about BB King. The Thrill is Gone.

In all seriousness, may he rest in peace. A legendary blues player, and his music will live forever.

God bless Tommy Burns and Bobby Murdoch.

  17. I was there round about ’72/ ’73 to see Bobby scoring Celtic’s 6000th league goal v Partick Thistle? Think it was the equaliser in a 1-1 draw.

Certainly wasn’t up there with some of the great goals he scored which have been mentioned, but I remember thinking it was a great milestone for him to be linked with near the end of his time with us.

1969 Cup Final – yes ra 4-0 doing of the died team! Swallex butted Bobby – commentator, Alex Cameron? – “Ferguson made a guesture with his head” – nothing changes folks. King is a done deal – thems don’t do rules and the SFA don’t really have any, every ‘Rule’ seems to have a built in get out whether it be the use of the useless word ‘May’ or the much more sinister ‘circumstances’ – doors are open everywhere!

Favourite Bobby goal – Leeds at Hampden – for those youngsters amongst us – Leeds were touted as being the greatest Club Team in the world – Celtic destroyed them home and away- then forgot to turn up in Milan :-(

Hail hail from a very sunny Majorca

Bright down here at the moment. Forecast is for wet and windy shortly.

I see Bobby Murdoch is getting his due today. Finest Celtic player I have had the pleasure to watch. He had wonderful passing ability, an unbelievable shot and was strong in the tackle. And he hardly ever played for Scotland……..
