Footballer machines, ‘greatest league’ guff

356

I assume none of us knew Stuart Armstrong has been playing with a hernia problem? Stuart’s form has been below that of last season, but whereas others carrying an injury would raise the white flag, he’s made himself available to the manager.

Much was, therefore, said and written about him which was grossly unfair. As we know, footballers are not machines, even brilliant ones.

I know I’m not alone in being irritated by “the greatest league in the world” guff we so often have to endure, in particular from the (England and Wales) Premier League main broadcaster, Sky Sports. It was brought to my attention this morning that European Champions, Real Madrid, are three points closer to relegation than the top of the table.

Juventus are the only non-La Liga team to reach a Champions League final in the last four seasons, having done so twice. Even in current form, Real are one of the most dangerous teams in the history of the game, but the technical brilliance of La Liga is such that any vulnerabilities are exposed.

If only we were part of that guff to the south, but the game there is as relevant to football as pantomime is to the theatre (Oh yes it is). The game’s brilliance resides in Spain.

NEW CQN PODCAST OUT NOW FEATURING TOMMY SHERIDAN

A Celtic State of Mind presents its 30th instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions.

Kevin Graham is joined by Scotty Alcroft to interview Scottish pro-independence politician, Tommy Sheridan, at The Penalty Spot in Glasgow.

The interview took place as part of A Celtic State of Mind’s first live event – Five-a-sides at The Penalty Spot – and, as such, there is some background noise (including mobile interference – apologies) from the audience.

The other voice you may hear throughout this episode is that of former Celtic striker, Frank McGarvey, who is a friend of Tommy’s, and who was also interviewed separately that day for a future show.

You are sure to enjoy Tommy’s eclectic input, as he discusses everything from Catalan independence to Coolio, with a constant undercurrent of that thing called Celtic.

    Excellent. As always.

There’s about as much chance, right enough,of an alien having heard of Murty as Martin Russell or whatever his name is.

  3. As lots of other posters have pointed out John McGinn has several Celtic credentials in his Family Tree.

He is obviously a Celtic supporter.

Now he has served his apprenticeship at St Mirren Dundee and now Hibs. He has improved season on season and you would further improve.

Now could he make the step up to playing for Celtic with better players among him.

WE know the boys background we know that others recognise his ability, if anyone deserves to be given a chance to step up and play for Celtic, then McGinn deserves it.

We bought Hayes, Armstrong, McKay Stevens from Scottish Teams and now Lewis Morgan.

    Why not John McGinn?

Ntcham looks like he could play a bit further up the park IMO…

    ————

With Rogic out I would like to see us try a 4-3-3. Brown sitting, with Ntcham and McGregor just ahead and at either side (kind of a 4-1-2-3). One can stay back when the other goes forward.

Be more solid without sacrificing creativity and also better protection for when the full-backs are attacking.

    No worries mate,

For the avoidance of doubt though, none of my original post in anyway had anything to do with your posts, it was aimed at people who come on here and call for Celtic fans to stop supporting Celtic, I for the most part have repetitive thumb syndrome when I spot the names, however today I felt like having a pop at them.

I read your initial post as responding to the Garden of Eden dialogue. I did not read it initially as referring to the Kriss & Lisa issue but I can see how some may have reached that idea.

It would be a terrible thing to be accused of such callousness so I can understand your anger. You have made it clearer what your intention was. I would hope that people accept that and do not believe that they know better than you what you intended to say.

  7. Glass2- possibly Brown and Bitton sitting with Ntcham further forward? Saturday will be ideal to try a few things HH

Thanks for reply, you’ve been in good form recently.

Regarding McGinn and others I think we need guys who are going to go home hurting in the event of a poor result as we do.

That boy would run through a brick wall for the Club,I know the family!

In this League the opposition realise we can play them off the park if allowed so they will change tact to the rough stuff and be tolerated by our compliant Officials, the Hearts game as an example.

Sevco are bringing in a core of ” true blues” short on ability but are on message to stop us.

Bottom line is that although the professional pride of folk like Dembele, Nchamp, and others may be offended by a defeat,or a poor performance, its a 24 hour annoyance as opposed to we, the Supporters, who live with it for weeks or longer.

Brendan has my eternal gratitude for a truly memorable last Season, but as the opposition re-group to attack we likewise need to adapt, hence my suggestion of McGinn and Shinnie to support Brown.

  9. From the BBC site:-

“A former Rangers administrator who is suing Scotland’s chief constable is bidding to have a court rule in his favour without evidence being heard.

David Whitehouse has raised a £9m action against Police Scotland’s Phil Gormley and the Lord Advocate.

Mr Whitehouse was arrested in November 2014 but the charges against him were later dropped.

Mr Gormley and James Wolffe QC claim police and prosecutors acted in line with correct legal procedure.

But Mr Whitehouse alleges he was wrongfully detained by detectives investigating Craig Whyte’s 2011 takeover of the Ibrox club.

And he claims damage was inflicted on his professional reputation.

    ‘Civil wrong’

His lawyers are now seeking summary decree in the action against the chief constable at the Court of Session in Edinburgh maintaining there are no relevant defences set out.

Heriot Currie QC, for Mr Whitehouse, told the court: “In my submission, at all stages the police case fails.”

He told judge Lord Malcolm: “If you deprive someone of his liberty unlawfully, that is a civil wrong.

Mr Currie argued that detaining officers did not have reasonable grounds for suspecting that Mr Whitehouse had committed an offence.

He said it was clear on legal authority that if the statutory conditions were not satisfied then a subsequent arrest was unlawful.

    Liquidation

The chief constable is defending the action and his counsel, Maria Maguire QC, said it would be argued that there was a requirement to establish that officers acted maliciously.

Mr Whitehouse, from Cheshire, and his colleague Paul Clark were appointed joint administrators of Rangers in 2012 following the sale of the club to Craig Whyte by Sir David Murray.

The pair were later arrested but charges against them were either dropped or thrown out.

Mr Whyte later stood trial but was acquitted at the High Court in Glasgow.

The club entered liquidation and was subsequently sold to a consortium led by Charles Green.

In the action brought by Mr Whitehouse, it is said that officers from Police Scotland attended at the premises of his employers Duff & Phelps in August 2013 with search warrants and seized a large quantity of material, some of which was privileged and was beyond the scope of the warrant.

    ‘Detention unnecessary’

Mr Whitehouse was detained in November 2014 and taken to a Glasgow police station and held in custody until he appeared at the city’s sheriff court three days later.

It is said on his behalf: “Throughout the period of detention there were at no point any reasonable grounds to suspect the pursuer had committed an offence.

“The detention was in any event unnecessary. There was insufficient evidence to justify a charge.”

It is maintained that there was no basis for any suspicion that he had engaged in criminal activity.

Mr Whitehouse was detained at his home on a further occasion.

It is alleged that the detention and subsequent prosecution of Mr Whitehouse was an interference with his human rights and that he suffered “significant reputational loss” and his finances were damaged.

And as a result of suffering loss, injury and damage, he is entitled to damages.

The chief constable disputes the claimant’s rights were infringed and maintains he is under no obligation to make reparation to Mr Whitehouse.

    The hearing continues.”

  12. If I was Brendan Rodgers I’d be looking to work for a club whose fans appreciated the work I do for their club.

  13. I have no idea if John McGinn is good enough for us or not?

Since he has never made an appearance for us i fail to see the justification of those saying he is not good enough to play for Celtic.

He was more than good enough to run the show in our 2-2 draw at Celtic park.

When a player has had an extended run of games in our first team that would be the time to judge.

Will be interesting to see how Liam Hendersons career progresses as he was never afforded an extended run to prove his worth?

  24. Right, closest I ever came to swearing just then.

You know how it’s often said that when former players of Glasgow Clubs are in the news then the Scottish papers will either have ‘former Celt’ or ‘former Old Firm star’ in the headline. Well, this morning (might have eve been on here) someone suggested that the headline “Former Celtic player charged with drink-driving after allegedly crashing his car yards from his home”was about a player who left us more than 50 years ago!!! I assumed it was a wind up. But, no, the good old Evening Times actually ran with that headline today in reference to – wait for it – Paddy Crerand (age 78!).

Honestly, that has to be their worst (best?) yet.

I’m away for some Camomile Tea and a long lie doon…..

  25. McGinn would do well for us IMO, sometimes the answer is on your own doorstep, Hartley, Robson….etc.I see the boy Maddison who was at the Sheep last year, and looked pretty good, is a target for Spurs and Chelsea…
