Football’s ability to destroy the finest spreadsheets

492

I watched Liverpool lose their fifth consecutive home game in the EPL last night.  One of the best teams in Europe over the last four years, which famously benefits from fan motivation, sit seventh in the table and out of a European spot for next season.

Even on current form, Liverpool would destroy Celtic, but the parallels in the two clubs decline are clear.  Virgil van Dijk’s injury enforced absence at Anfield had as big an impact on Liverpool as Fraser Forster’s loss to Celtic.  Both sides lost significant numbers through injury and, if anything, Celtic fans have a greater reputation for encouraging their team than Liverpool’s.

Jurgen Klopp, the urbane football intellectual, looks lost.  We see unflattering bouts of temper as he struggles to understand where his Midas Touch went.  Jurgen is among the game’s very best; Neil Lennon should take comfort that what happened to him can happen to anyone.

You and I have often said that a team operating at 90% is unrecognisable from the same players at full tilt.  When one or two things go wrong at the margins, an entire edifice can crumble.  Watching Liverpool also suffer does not sweeten the pill, but it is a lesson that football can destroy even the finest spreadsheets.

are EH and HIS coaching staff still looking for a club , get it done

*after ediie howe left Bournemouth his assistant jason tindall and the rest of his coaching staff stayed on, tindall was promoted tae manager where he only lasted 6 months to be replaced by jonathan woodgate who had been appointed first team coach the day before.

If EH comes tae Lennoxtown seemingly his former coaches who he disnae talk tae won’t be accompanying him.

  9. Bournesouprecipe – so we’ve still got the folk Rodger’s didn’t want? That’s reassuring! Even so, they may be very good at their jobs, but the point I was making is that all that stuff and the manager need to work as a collective – and while it’s “lazy” on my part, Stories about Griffiths sending his monitor on car journeys during lockdown (and him not returning fit enough) and Lennon suggesting May was a serious threat when he hadn’t played for months suggests it wasn’t happening.

  10. Found my old grandas season book from1941..was gonna post picture but god knows how to do it.

I’m thinking more a drop in perceived perceptions of standards rather than Rodgers v Lennon.

It was Neil Lennon’s ‘fitness’ ‘training’ ‘coaching’ ‘motivational’ sessions that won all the winnable trophies in his second spell, regardless of what happened in the so called lost ten season.

Many factors contributed to our downfall, and definitely wasn’t all down to Neil Lennon’s unsaintly status, or comparison in how just pure sh8te he was, compared to the pure dead brilliant previous manager with all his sports science stuff.

The sooner Celtic supporters close the chapter on our unique second nine in a row, the sooner we’ll start to refocus on our next one IMO.

    HH

p.s. It won’t be the last season at Celtic regardless of who’s manager, where a player returns to full training a tad overweight,

“When I respond to these ludicrous claims I’ve never once defended the SNP, I’m not a natural SNP voter I have loaned them my vote as a way to achieve independence. If you can find any evidence of my defending the SNP then call me out, otherwise you are just plain wrong.”

    ————————–

Yes, that defence gets used a lot- the “I’m not an SNP man- I am a pro-Independence man”.

I’d be morre convinced if people’s response to Paul’s legitimate criticisms were of the nature:-

“Yes- the SNP gets a lot wrong, including this, but it won’t stop me voting for them as a means to gain Independence”

But, that’s not what we see.

We get attacks on Paul for criticising the FM, and criticising the SNP policies on football. And when people come on to atttack Paul for this, they are, de facto, defending the SNP amd saying they are not guiltuy of these things that Paul has presented. You are correct, i do not hear much of a defence mounted to explain what they are up to and why it isn’t an anti-football or an anti-Celtic bias; it just gets dismissed as rubbish not worthy of even an attempt at logical refutation.

I have to agree with you on the JHB (?) posts- they read to me like a Black Flag Op- the Yes Movement’s imaagination of an anti- Independence, pro Butcher’s Apron position. But, that’s just speculation on my part.

  14. BSR – I think those are all fair points. I agree that it ought not to be as binary as Rodgers good, Lennon bad and I actually apportion blame at the Board. Lennon is a manager who we know is more old school – he’ll take players and motivate them, and he’s got a decent sense of tactics.

My issue isn’t with him. It’s that it looked like we had a strategy for a while – buy low, develop, sell high. Lennon first time made it work but we knew football was moving on and brought Delia in (someone who was more into that side of things) ostensibly to help Lennon (which probably would have worked well – two guys who’s strengths complimented/covered the other’s weaknesses). Lennon left and we went with Ronnie – good at the physical stuff, less so at the mental and tactical stuff.

We replaced with Rodgers who had both, as well as experience at the top level and he moved things on enormously. Recruitment wasn’t great, but he developed our existing players enormously.

He left and Lennon’s return gave us a boost for the end of the season. His permanent return was based on excitement and a chumocracy between Desmond, Lawwell and Lennon and took us back to square 1. All our gains were lost and while it wasn’t instant, the players missed having both sides of the coin. Lennon’s strengths were thus diluted, and things came to a head when we scrapped the “sell high” part of the strategy to chase the 10. An inability to get the players to match previous standards, poor recruitment and morale, a lack of clarity about how we play and increasingly spirally crazy decisions/changes to try to address the decline meant we are where we are. Not helped by crazy indiscipline (Bolingoli) and the decision and fall out of Dubai.

I also agree the chapter is closed and we should move on. We need now to be mapping out the next decade – coming up with a plan we’ll stick to (unless it’s failing terribly) and not let circumstances/convenience detract us from that.

  15. The lifespan of a successful team and manager in a highly competitive league like the English Premier is probably 3 to 4 years. Liverpool successes in winning the Champions League and the English Premier obviously results in the players becoming extremely wealthy people. They have grown fat wealthy and complacent with success. Klopps days as manager are probably numbered and he would be a perfect fit to take command of the German national side.

Wee Nicola positively gushing about the Euros……but she told us she wasn’t remotely interested in football…more faces than the town clock

*Possibly the comment fae UEFA about Glasgow losing Euro games as well as blojo wanting tae open his country up for the pagan festival of the summer solstice may have something tae do with her new found love of the at one time working man’s game.

Anyway, here’s a wee tale that looks tae be related tae all of this:

A couple of years ago some acquaintances planned a family event for last summer; they would be travelling from far and wide for it.

A house was rented with the deposit paid; flights tae, as well as a couple of nights in hotels for touring purposes.

Then Covid hit and the trip was hanging on a shoogly peg but nobody panicked yet, that is until the hotel chain contacted them offering a credit or rebate on their rooms, they opted for the rebate due tae the uncertainty and the money duly arrived back in their account.

After a bit of a stramash with the airlines they also finally after a few months got their full fare back, they did decide though tae carry over the house booking to this summer.

Then out of the blue they were told last week that the deposit would be returned tae the card holder whose account it came out of.

When they inquired why, the reason given was the authorities had advised the rental agency that holidaymakers, possibly from certain countries, due before August were tae have their agreement cancelled and monies, if any, refunded.

The money arrived in their account 2 days ago.

So what are the authorities not telling anyone and why is fitba hating first minister got her heid up blojo’s erse.

Brendan Rodgers is clearly a fine coach but his record in Europe would surely be a concern for any of the bigger clubs considering him.

  20. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Letting Craig Gordon go before we had an adequate replacement – who made that call?

The number of blunders we made this season would fill a CQN prize winning list.

Personally i think most of Neil’s success was down to what Brendan Rodgers had left behind,

and when he got round to putting his own stamp on things it all went pear shaped,

that coupled with some incredible blunders sunk the 10,

    just my opinion..
