Foregone conclusion territory

1955

I don’t know about you but practically every football thought I have at the moment is connected to where we go next. The small matter of winning the league title has slipped into ‘foregone conclusion’ territory, which is always dangerous.

The players will be no different from the rest of us, but they will have more on their minds. A change of manager is likely to mean a new system, and new squad requirements. They need to focus on making the best of the next five games. One thing that has been reassuring this week is Ronny Deila’s comments. His professional pride is clear; he’ll apply himself fully to the task in hand until the end of the season.

Eyes on the task of winning the league, as soon as possible.

  1. I agree that the Players should be spurred on to win the League as we know RD is going. The Players in that fateful Sunday in Motherwell knew MON was off, they weren’t spurred on. We need to be up for it, we may have lost out on two Cup Finals this Season…we now have five Cup Finals, go figure.

    Keep the Faith!

  2. Neganon,

The reason I compared both boards is that I have yet to see any verifiable evidence of corruption or criminality committed by our present custodians. If you do have any supported evidence of this then obviously my opinion of the current board will be affected.

  3. Winning captains

I’m sure you can point me to the posts were Neganon asked for the return of KellY/White and Cassidy?

He has a valid viewpoint about the damage our custodians are doing to the club.

    Whataboutery is not relevant.

Previous administrators were just clueless and dishonest.

The present ones are smart and cynical businessmen who are doing a poor job with regards to football team.

I support from afar and will watch Celtic tv for run in with some nervousness.

But unless the board start putting the football team as a priority i will not renew.

Lawell may be a good businessman but he is terrible football administrator.

His increasing pay packet is unjustified if based on dwindling fan base and income as a result of downsizing team in performance and ability.

What a joy to see the great Tommy Gemmell on the blog this afternoon.

Yet, 2 days before a game which could go a very long way towards us winning a fifth consecutive title, and at a point where the team could really do with 90 minutes of backing from the stands to drag us over the line, we are getting calls to withdraw attendance and support.

Neganon, I agree with quite a lot of your sentiments regarding the board. But supporting the team is exactly what is needed right now.

I really don’t get this ‘we should damage our club because the board is damaging our club more’ thing.

    Boards come and go.

Five in a row’s five in a row.

Win the bloody league, first and foremost. Then let’s set about the backroom problems.

Anyway, I think Lawwell will either be off this summer, or will have his remit pulled back to exclude footballing matters. I hope it is the latter, myself.

It wasn’t too many years ago that he was spoken of with respect on here and other Celtic blogs as an asset to the club – “the sharp-suited man” etc.

The problems started with him being allowed to stray away from shrewdly counting beans for the PLC and into football affairs.

He’s been good for us at the tallying-up of beans. That’s his forte. Our beans have never been more orderly. However, he is not good at choosing managers/coaches/players.

So he should be given the choice of either sticking to what he’s good at, or knacking off to Sunderland.

I would bet real money on our next manager being in charge of ALL footballing matters, maybe reporting to a Director of Football above him. But he won’t be reporting to Peter Lawwell.

  5. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

Lawwell is a good business man is s just a myth.

He may be an accomplished accountant but that’s quite different to being a successful businessman.

In my experience good businessmen manage risk and grow businesses.

    Good accountants balance the books.

    Ekbhoy and croppybhoy,

Hard evidence. The 5way agreement and the fact that Lawwell has been called out as being involved and hasn’t refuted it. Or Lawwell sitting on the sfa board where he would have had to be engaged in what was going on.

Fanatic …. this is only the second thing on which you and I have disagreed …. the first is Nir Biton (i still think he is a decent footballer) …

the second is PL …. increasingly, I am questioning his skill as a businessman …. he seems adept at picking low-hanging fruit, but any one of a handful of businessmen could do that … but the ideas and vision that makes great businessmen great? I have never seen it from PL ….

as I have said before, given Celtic’s fanbase, it would be hard for it not to make money … but on all of the major targets ( new league, corruption in the game, TV revenue, european income … in some way improving Celtic’s brand…. I have not really seen anything where he has been successful …)

  10. Neganon2 In answer to your question yes I am prepared to put my shoulder to the wheel if/when there is a cohesive plan. H H Hebcelt

  11. Lennybhoy……………..The Celtic players will be on a healthy bonus to win the title. Amazing how people react at the thought of swelling their bank balance.

  12. Ekbhoy try and stay calm. But can I also assure you that double entry bookkeeping does not result in balancing the books (if only).

We will never agree on Nir unless a new coach discovers a player there.

I defer to you on Lawell as i just took the word of people on here.

Also was trying to seem fair and reasonable which is something I’m not renowned for.

You know i’ve said all season long that i think its fairly good just poorly coached.

Steve Clarke, was Mourinho’s assistant at Chelsea, managed WBA, ex-St. Mirren Player who we could not afford and went to Chelsea…Davie Hay was told, you want him buy him out of your own money.

Back to the old one about SNP bringing down poor old Jim Callaghan and inflicting Thatcher on us.

Would that be the same Sunny Jim who lost the support of Irish Nationalist, Gerry Fitt because he was proposing legislation that would have seen more of those nice Ulster Unionists in Parliament.

  19. mike in toronto on

    Hi Fanatic

I agree that the squad is better than it has been showing under RD … we brought in some decent players (too many of the same kind/role)… but on the whole, I liked Armstrong, GMS is a player who is inconsistent (what winger isn’t) but puts bums in seats, Scott allen looks like a player, and I like the look of young ryan christie …. KT is world bloody Class! Brains and heart! Love that young player! I think Jozo will be a good player for us (if he can stay injury free)… Boyata may have been, but I think his confidence is gone, and probably needs a new start somewhere else … I think Eric is great! Hell, I was one of the few who actually thought Ciftci was a good player (and I still do).

I think we need someone in the middle to play beside NB… and we dont have the players to play 4231 .. but I think we have the basis of a decent team …. not going to win the CL good, but not a bad bunch of players …. we just have to get them all playing AS A TEAM

  23. IF we drop points this weekend should we continue the farce with Ronnie at the helm? A lot of revisionist BS with regards to his tenure has been posted over the last couple of days. The indisputable fact is he was never up to the task of managing a club the size of Celtic with all the inherent demands and pressure that brings. Not even sure if he would have been a good development coach, not many of our young bhoys being given a chance outwith KT which was a pure fluke due to Izzy being injured.

Ronnie, allegedly, signed ALL the players. Ciftci, Cole, Boyata, KR etc again which should have been enough to have him canned.

Said it before, Lenny as interim coach (if so required) and I’ll stick my head above the parapet and say Roy Keane as manager for me.

Agree with assessment but think your winding me up with Nir in the middle.:)

Here are my reasons why he should not play central.

1- never makes a forward pass.

    2-cant tackle

3- has uncanny ability to be wrong side of man leaving gaping holes

4-due to above gives away numerous fouls in dangerous areas

5-abstains from any form of responsibility

Just because it’s an old one doesn’t make it any the less true. The booze cruise that was the SNP parliamentary party knew exactly what they were doing – bringing in an extremist Tory government.

And just for the record the long term SNP Chairman and Salmond associate -Wolfe – was an arch-bigot. His reason for demanding victory in the Falklands? ‘The Argentines are Catholics and Britain is a Protestant nation. Right out of the Ian Paisley play book.’ Yet the benighted will still vote for them.

Steve Clarke has huge experience as a coach successful time at both Liverpool and Chelsea, did a reasonable job as WBA manager. He wouldn’t be the worst choice – although not sure how he’d cope with the press. Not one of the meeja darlings.

I’ll definitely be there on Sunday and for the other home games in the run in, roaring on the Bhoys and Ronny. As others have said, the only thing that matters at the moment is winning the League title. Other matters can wait until this is achieved.

However, once the season is over I’ll be keeping my cash in my pocket until what Celtic’s approach to change is. The Club is not stagnating it’s actually regressing. Change is needed.

    ——————————————

    Ditto.

  29. Fan-a-tic,

Lawwell is a one dimensional beancounter who should never be CEO of Celtic FC never mind DIrector of Football.

It says a lot for Paul67s sheltered life that he snuggles up to this clown.

As predicted several years back and I hate being right on this one Lawwell would bring us to the lowest common denominator. Brian Quinn bless him is off the same ilk. We travel up and down on the same flights for games from my London base…although as mentioned I had the misfortune of travelling with Dave King all the way from Joburg last week. Accountants drive you down to a cost level of the nearest competitor.

Paul67 is one of the people who puts most into Celtic and is closest to the clique that run Celtic. However he is blinded by this and does not see thru clowns like Lawwell. A £75M business is a small number and if one of my guys failed like Lawwell he would be gone in a heartbeat.

paul67 do yourself a favour and call out this charlatan…..or tell us you still believe in fairy tales.

Like it or not, even if we lose on Sunday, Ronny is in charge until the last game of the season.

If we want to secure this league fans, coaches, players and board have got to be as one
