Foregone conclusion territory

1955

I don’t know about you but practically every football thought I have at the moment is connected to where we go next. The small matter of winning the league title has slipped into ‘foregone conclusion’ territory, which is always dangerous.

The players will be no different from the rest of us, but they will have more on their minds. A change of manager is likely to mean a new system, and new squad requirements. They need to focus on making the best of the next five games. One thing that has been reassuring this week is Ronny Deila’s comments. His professional pride is clear; he’ll apply himself fully to the task in hand until the end of the season.

Eyes on the task of winning the league, as soon as possible.

Regarding Sunday we should take care of them. I am going to support St Johnstone tonight hopefully they can do us a wee favour.

It’s risky for us with Ronny Deila saying he’s leaving. It might have been better to have him leave straight away but maybe the new manager is still in a job and won’t be available.

Celtic will be quite far down the road on this. They would have known about it after the European defeats.

Sunday is up to the support. Do you want to win? Support the team then and support them the way that you are famous for.

Sign You’ll Never Walk Alone. I’ve noticed that’s not been happening.

Great point Tommy – theres a handful on here refusing to support and/or threatening to walk away who should listen up,

Peter Lawwell I think does a reasonably good job on the financial side of things. He is best with the financial matters and better than anyone before him at the club. It might not be popular but when you have experienced the way financed used to be run. It is better.

  5. Got more bad news for you, Antonio Doneely: Willie Haughy is an active but subterranean member of the Celtic Trust!!!

Re Roy Keane. I’ve been firmly in the no camp. You quite fancy him to do a good job, as indeed do many others and the esteemed Mr G.

Ya got me thinking bud (as I was zipping around the house with the vacuum), Roy Keane? Have I got him wrong?

    Possibly?

Tell ya where I concluded TET. If Roy is announced as manager, can I safely assume that he has only accepted after discussions in which he has received guarantees re money and authority to act?

You would assume so eh! In which case, it may not be a bad thing to hear he’s signed on the dotted line.

  7. Afternoon Tommy Gemmell,

    Glad you are better.

Great to see you on the blog, talking about times present and past. You are a Celtic legend and your views are greatly appreciated. You will always hold a special place in the hearts of the Celtic fans.

Really great to read your thoughts today.

As a member of the most recent Celtic squad to put up 5IAR, are you up for unfurling another league flag at Celtic Park this summer?

  9. Tommy Gemmell on

Need to sign off now Bhoys. I had a few CQNers round today to say hello which was a lovely surprise.

Most of today’s team are mercenaries. They don’t get Celtic like you and your team-mates. Maybe the young lhads our manager has been developing will have it. That would be a real legacy.

    ———

I really hope that’s the case. Just worry about the constant pressure to win everything every year. Makes it difficult to introduce the young lads.

I was totally against Keane two years ago, but I’d say I’m a bit warmer to it this time. Not too sure why. Maybe the experience he has had as an assistant has helped him learn?

I hope everyone read Tommy Gemmell’s call to support the team, starting on Sunday.

Hope all who can make the match, attend and cheer the Bhoys to 5 in a row.

You would think it would be safe to assume that.

Problem we have is we want what we can’t have, money & kudos we are seriously devoid of these days when it comes to a coach,as supporters we want what is out of our reach and are no happy when we don’t get it.

Like teams there is a league structure of managers, we are looking in the 3 rd div I reckon, if we were to push the boat out we could look in the 2 nd, but till we are in the CL year in year out, or in a league where the tv money is crazy, we will never reach the top div.

I am happy with Keano, and will be with whoever we get.

Maybe just as some managers struggle when they go from a small club to a big club (maybe they just don’t quite have the right mentality for it), it could be that Roy is the opposite way around?

He hasn’t been a manager for a few years now – would he have a backroom team ready to roll?

Dunno. Probably not my first choice, but not as against as I was before…

  15. Never tire of this story.

    From MON,

I remember being at Forest when Tommy Gemmell came down and I said to him,and you know I was in awe of him,”That was some goal in the European Cup Final,”He replied “Which one, son?

  16. TET

I know what you’re saying bud and like you, I have my preferences, but I hope everyone gets behind the new manager whoever he is. ( unless it’s Mojo or Andy Walker:-)

If it turns out a real bargain basement appointment however, given recent events, the new guy had better hit the ground running or both he and PL will be afforded very little patience!!

  17. I would not be in a rush to clear out any players.

Playing in unsuitable roles and a poorly implemented system is difficult even for the best.

As said Neymar was touted as a flop at Barca before Enrique arrived and played him to his strengths and in a suitable system.

Cant stand Bitton but maybe the new coach can find something?

I think Boyata is better than this forum suggests and is a victim of a flawed playing system.

McGregor can run and shoot. Not convinced but maybe he just needs coached better.

The Tottenham coach has shown that youth can be trusted so pick based on talent and coach accordingly rather than looking at appearances made.

Interested to see new coaches philosophy.

Have said for years that we lacked a pathway from youth to first team .

Get a director of football who will work with coach to integrate all footballing operations.

    Fragmented systems are wasteful.

Fergies success at Utd stemmed from a very good youth team who he was brave enough to introduce to first team.

That was the spine of his team for years.

  18. I think the criteria should be a director of football and coach tandem.

We can’t compete with big league financials so it is vital we rear our own,

Coach appointed needs to understand he is a vital part of machine and not the emperor

For this reasons guys like Keane and Lennon should be excluded.

I would not be in a rush to clear out any players.

I couldn’t agree more. Play the players in a position that’s natural to them and in a system they understand and are comfortable with. We may get a few pleasant surprises. Only then can we weed out those who are not worth keeping. (I don’t include the ones like Cole, we already know are not worth keeping).

  20. FAN-A-TIC

Look at it from Bitton’s point of view on the pitch, he looks right and sees Mikael whose legs have been gone for the whole season, he looks beside him and he sees Scott Brown, whose head has been gone since he returned, he looks to his left and Young Kieran and thinks, there’s someone who can take a pass, he looks forward to the left of the three player and sees no. 50 for the season, then finally he looks behind him and thinks, how the feck did this happen!

    Just a thought…

  21. TnT

RK wouldn’t be the top of my list, far from it, I would rather get someone from La Liga in, I have been saying Paco or Toral for some time now, both tick a lot of boxes, wouldn’t cost the earth, play good football, used to having players given to them and building teams on the cheap with freebies and Bosmans, having their better players sold.

We will see, I just hope there is plans afoot.

That Tommy G is willing to come on here is excellent and offers insight into the running of the Club. It would be equally excellent if John Paul Taylor could give one hour a week in his job as Supporters Liaison Officer to answer questions on here and on a few of the other Celtic Supporters` blogs. He may well be a bust man but surely his busy-ness should be mainly concerned with liaising with us, the support?

Those who read my posts will be aware that I do not like to criticise Celtic because so many others do that job already. Even so, the area where I believe our Club can be most fairly criticised is in the area of Communication with the Support. A regular hour with JPT on Supporters` Blogs would help address that failing,

Sadly he has been a huge let down regardless of the form of others.

Bitton plays in a role where you expect to see a player make interceptions, tackles, fill in for the centre back if they are in trouble, communicate constantly with his team mates. Do you see this, because I don’t. I see a timid big guy who has a powerful shot but does not have anywhere near the influence on games he should for a player in the ‘engine room’.

He has the potential, but I havent seen the progress I did see with Wanyama. Not saying he should be a carbon copy, but he needs many similiar qualities.

  26. Starry Plough

I have rarely seen Bitton look anywhere but backwards.

The off the ball movement of our team is non existent so maybe thats why?

But i have never witnessed a central midfielder who has such consistent ability to be on wrong side of his opponent.

This usually results in one or two things.

1-He concedes a foul in dangerous area.

2-The gaping hole leaves central defenders exposed and opponent with time to shoot.

These scenarios have cost us frequently this season.

As i said maybe he has some talent unseen by me and a new coach may find a role that suits his ability.

As a rule, I like the players we have brought in recently (not all, but most …)

The problem with trying them all is that we have so many who seem to play the same role (SArmstrong, SAllen, TR, SJ, KC, RC … sort of attacking mids,.) …. not all can play, but we are burning a lot of wages paying them …

and, to be fair to the players, I think these players need a good run of 5-10 games to see what they can really do … with so many players, it just isn’t possible … some we simply have to get rid of …. just to get them off the books. to free up space and money for other areas …

but then we actually have few of what I would consider ‘true’ midfielders (SB and NB…) , and either players need to be moved up from the juniors, or brought back from loan (LH?) ….

going to be some tough decisions over the summer … the sooner we get the new guy in, the better

  28. Go tell the Spartim on

    Fan a tic,

i think a massive cull is needed, purely because we have too many players, but i agree on the merits of just tweaking the side, some however, do need to move on. Who thought getting Lustig fit for the whole season would see him drop off the cliff. Broonie, needs a rest or something, some need to go – Forrest, Commons, Cole, Mulgrew (unless he’s never played anywhere again apart from CB). If the big Croat can emulate some of his earlier performances, i think there could be a case for either a back 3 at the back (simu, erik and DB) or even a four with Erik in front. Some decent quality additions in the right places could make us a half decent team.

Im with TET, but Bielsa or Sampaoli, would be the icing on the cake for me.

Not all players in that area of the field are out-and-out defensive midfielders. Think of someone like Pirlo – more of a deep-lying playmaker I would say.

Bitton would benefit from having a natural DM beside him.

He has shown his quality at times – outstanding away to Qarabag.

He has lost a bit of form but he hasn’t become a poor player.

  31. FAN-A-TIC

He certainly hasn’t played well this season, the off the ball movement is non existent in our team as is pass and move and I would say Nir has gone backwards in that respect, let’s see what the new coach makes of him. I think with a proper defence midfielder in beside him he push on further up the park, at one point Scott Brown was doing his sweeper in front of the defence but that seems to have gone from his game as last Sunday proved.

Nir Bitton would not be the first midfielder to have crashed and burned beside our captain:))
