Foregone conclusion territory

1955

I don’t know about you but practically every football thought I have at the moment is connected to where we go next. The small matter of winning the league title has slipped into ‘foregone conclusion’ territory, which is always dangerous.

The players will be no different from the rest of us, but they will have more on their minds. A change of manager is likely to mean a new system, and new squad requirements. They need to focus on making the best of the next five games. One thing that has been reassuring this week is Ronny Deila’s comments. His professional pride is clear; he’ll apply himself fully to the task in hand until the end of the season.

Eyes on the task of winning the league, as soon as possible.

Kieran Tierney? Just keep playing the same way and always wear green and white hoops to his work. I like him a lot.

  2. Tommy

You have put the cat among the pigeons with wanting Roy Keane, most on here wouldn’t be in his camp.

I personally am at a loss as why not, but I’m sure it’s got nothing to do with the rubbish that gets printed about him that people believe.

    Hi Tommy

Hope you are feeling better. Many thanks for the great memories you gave me as a youngster, both on the field and when I was fortunate enough to meet you and you signed my autograph book.

I saw you first playing left back to Ian Young then moved to right back and then back to the left side. I had the impression you were naturally right footed. Did you find it difficult switching sides like that and what would be your preferred position?

I think you were also the only Celtic keeper I watched and never saw concede a goal!

    Tommy

Do you think it was the right time to announce the departure of Ronny D or should it have been left until the end of the season?

  5. Many thanks Tommy.

I would have loved to see Bertie in our dressing room after Sunday’ s game.

Thank you for your reply, and the wonderful memories.

Young KT reminds me of a left footed Danny McGrain.

    Hope you are keeping well.

    I’d be Keanen on Roy

Given Deila and Warburton are the current yardsticks for top Scottish club managers, I’d view RK as a step up.

Not sure I’d see him as a 2 season manager…. Volatility would be a major risk ..

  8. HAIL HAIL TOMMY

Roy Keane said when he joined villa , that Paul Lambert said if we lose. we stew on it for a day, then move on.

Roy’s reply was i don’t think i could do that it would take me weeks to get over a loss. (or something similar)

who had the right attitude in your opinion ?

  9. Roy Keane?

He’d be my shout… the dressing room seems to be full of snakes, at least we know they wouldnt be tolerated by him…

  10. It’s not Keane’s volatility that would worry me, it’s his poor managerial record.

    Great player though he was.

I remember when Bobby Charlton gave up playing and went into management, I fully expected him to be a great manager.

    Alas.

  11. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

You couldn’t stew over a defeat for weeks at Villa – you’d have lost three more by then :-)

  12. Regarding the appointment of our new manager:

we play our final game on Sunday the 15th May.

    If we win the league,

we play our 2nd round 1st leg CL qualifier on Tuesday 12th July or Wednesday 13th July.

    Not long.

When do we appoint a new manager?

How long will he have to get a team ready?

I don’t think we need worry about CL football for next year or probably EL football, for that matter.

    Shambles! A disgrace!

Get Lawwell and his crew to feck!

It is criminal that we are in this mess.

Sheer, utter, criminal neglect by Lawwell and the board.

Reminds me of when Wim left. The board claimed that he wouldn’t present them with a forward plan or strategy for the future, But, where was their own forward planning? It was non existent.

We’re back in that dark place.

How to take a penalty, copyright Tommy Gemmell.

    1. Make sure it’s on target

    2. Hit it as hard as possible

    3. No side footers – wishy washy and 50% chance you’ll miss.,

We would take 6 each on training every week. I never missed in training but in games I had two saved out of 50 odd. Jim Criuikshank at Hearts save one can’t remember the other one. Was it Norrie Martin at old Rangers. His hands are still stinging apparently.

  14. Paul Lambert must have enjoyed many “stewing” days at Villa.

He has said previously that he was not interested in Celtic job; and his stock was higher then. No thanks, Paul. Not for me.

Maybe appoint St Patrick. Seems he might be the man to drive the snakes out of the dressing room.

  16. Hello Tommy, hope you are keeping well. Two names that have been mentioned but not together, I mean Lambert and Henke, I am sure on Henke’s video he and Paul Lambert are playing pool and Henrik says ” you come back here as manager and I’ll be your coach” Think that would work if we could talk to them.

I spoke to a wee scouser mate in work earlier. Doubt I’ve ever met a more passionate and knowledgeable football man. He’s 58, Liverpool and Celtic fan, now season book holder up here. Goes to the juniors all over the Central belt at every chance. I’ve chatted football all my adult life in pubs, work etc , everywhere, every time on holiday.

This guy however, you could listen to all day. History, stats, tactics, he offers a down to earth insight and analysis without the bullsh+t. His summing up of Deila was fascinating, something Brian Glanville would have been proud of, but it was equalled by at least five posts I’ve read on here the last few days, easily beyond anything our lazy lying Incompetent press are capable of.

Coming from Liverpool I asked for Chas’s take on Moyes and Rogers. Rogers, btw my choice, he said, would bore us to death with passing football. He nearly won the league due to three on form strikers, one world class, on fire. Not for him. Moyes, he told me some reds wanted to poach him from Everton. His biggest attribute is spotting talent, and kept Everton top eight on comparatively low budget and only two big money buys. Not perfect but only apart from the Guardiolas who would please 100% of the support.

DD, it’s the 50th anniversary of the season that put Celtic on the world map. There’s never been a better time to show some ambition. Anyone we can afford is a gamble, take a punt on Moyes.

  18. Philbhoy

    Was it that bad ?

When he went to Sunderland they were in the relegation zone in the championship, he got them promoted that season, that is some feat imo, when you are in the epl you are up against established teams that can outspend you.

I accept his time at Ipswich wasn’t the may west, whereas big Mick has done well there with the limited funds he has had.

Maybes Mick and Roy then as the dream team :-)

  20. Hi, Tommy, glad to hear you are back in rude health. Tommy do you know if Wullie Haughey would be willing to purchase Dermot Desmoind’s shares? Or any other wealthy Tim for that matter. IMO Celtic are stagnating under DD. I can’t fathom when we have TWO BILLIONAIRES we are so penny foolish. Thanks.

I think the “Big Shot” was the first book I ever read

    Ha ha

I am gradually coming to the conclusion that RK could be the man we need for next season.

Not short about “long term” (whatever that means in managerial terms…).

But certainly we need a somebody with a big personality who who won’t suffer fools gladly (and that means with respect to the board as well).

Hope your feeling better these days.

    All the best!!!

  23. Lord Haughey buying DD shares? Seriously? I thought we didn’t like lords ot knights on the CFC board? This should be interesting?

  24. Tommy Gemmell on

I just as comfortable on the left or right back. I enjoyed playing centre back, I never lost a goal as a goalie and the one time I played up front I scored a hat-trick. Apart from that I was rubbish!

  25. Can’t agree with even the Great TG about Roy Keane. Imo, his managerial career is nothing to write home about.

By the bye, I never thought I would find myself saying this, Tommy, but our current LB may end up your equal. Now, That is saying something. Two things will stay with me, Tommy, of your playing for the Hoops: the power of your shot and your sheer joy in wearing the jersey.

Most of today’s team are mercenaries. They don’t get Celtic like you and your team-mates. Maybe the young lhads our manager has been developing will have it. That would be a real legacy.

We went to America in summer 1966 and were undefeated in ten matches with me upfront once or twice. We built our team spirit over there. Time to do it again.

For starters the players need to have trust in the manager and his tactics. Next you have to have 11 players playing for Celtic and not some playing against our team.

The new Rangers were hungrier than us – why?

It comes down to what goes on in the background. Things weren’t right in the dressing room for that type of performance to happen.

That’s why I am saying Roy Keane could sort it out.

Celtic is about Celtic not about individuals.

    Dear Mr. Gemmell

Thanks for doing this. Having people like you on CQN is one of the many reasons CQN is my favourite Celtic blog.

Interesting answer re: Roy Keane (who was one of my favourite players). He didn’t put up with much crap as a player, nor as a manager. But so may players today seem so out of touch with the real world (Lets be honest … a lot seem like spoiled children)… do you think RK’s hardnosed style would be any better received than RD’s attempt to improve fitness?

Also, given your comment about Celtic not being about individuals, I would be most interested to hear your thoughts on our main shareholder and Mr. Lawwell…. both of whom seem to cast large shadows (too large in my book) over Celtic.

Thanks for taking the time to join us.

Rogers need a new challenge to get his teeth in to. A manager with a bit of bite – just what we need…

It’ll never happen salary offered by Celtic would put a ‘dent’ in his expectations..
