From David Marshall to Tony Watt

1317

Just days after The Beating of Barca in 2004 the youthful Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell presented teenage sensation, David Marshall, with a new contract, reward for his incredible goalkeeping performances against the Catalans.  Having made only a single first team appearance, in a cup game against (then) lower league opponents, David played the second half of the first leg against Ronaldinho & Co, then all of the second leg, without conceding a goal.

It Camp Nou performance was the most remarkable I’ve seen from a keeper.  After years looking for a solid performer to make the position his own, it looked like we had a new star.

A year later David had, if anything, regressed.  He remained first choice until after the start of season 2005-06 but Artur Boruc, for a while the genuine article, soon replaced him.  David was shipped out to Norwich before eventually settling at Cardiff City, where he has built a solid career, but his star never shone as brightly as we expected it to.  His Scottish contemporaries, Allan McGregor and Craig Gordon, both overtook him.

It is incredibly hard for a youth player to break into a team like Celtic in a position like goalkeeper, or striker, the pressure to deliver – every time – is so high, we are a whole lot more likely to introduce wingers.  The parallels between David Marshall and Tony Watt are remarkable, so far.

From the outside it’s hard to guess what went wrong for David at Celtic.  He lost his place at Celtic when he was just 20 and the trajectory of his career was never the same but 20 is still remarkably young for a keeper working at Champions League level.  Tony Watt is two years younger than David and he is in the considerably better position of being able to come on as substitute for sections of games, or to drop away for a few weeks, if necessary.

We should expect more fantastic splurges of form from the player but there will be frustrations and dips in form too.  He has the skill, speed and strength to make it.  With hard work and patience he stands an excellent chance.

Mentality, what a great word to associate with Neil Lennon. He has one of the Strongest mentalities out there and the team is being built with this.

Lisbon will be a Great night against a top TOP European side, Win, Lose or Draw.

Neil is doing a grand job with the old tactics, his mind comes alive against these Great teams. ;))

  8. Just spoke to my son who went to the agm using my attendance card. Asked him about Bankier’s closing comment having read a few remarks here.

He was amazed Bankier was getting stick and he is no sychophant. From where he sat he thought it was an attempt at a joke that fell flat, He thinks he is a poor public speaker which I picked up also at last year’s AGM.

His message to a fuming Pa was “take a chill pill, dad” and enjoy Lenny who he said was terrific.

  9. Vhman, Sorry to hear of your loss.. Take care.

I was at the AGM, and I have to say that I came away thinking that it was pretty uneventful

I thought IB came across ok. He did try some humour, some of which came off.

All in all a pretty tame affair .

I did manage to grab a word with PL afterwords and he stated that we do not enter into any joint sponsorship agreement with any other club..

Obviously companies are free to go and negotiate with anyone else they like.

If the board didn’t know before, then they certainly know now the overwhelming feeling is for an exclusive shirt deal.

All minds now on Aberdeen and 3 point.

  10. ” the board will look after the commercial and business aspects of the club you just behave yourselves over the next 12 months”.

That is a disgraceful thing to say!

  11. Win v Aberdeen or at least a point from Benfica?

I’ll take that point every time.

Plenty of time to make up any lost ground in the SPL, and it would be incredible to stay in Europe after Christmas when you consider the group we’re in and how far we’ve come since Lenny became manager.

I believe a score draw and Barca win over Spartak secures us second place?

I think lenny and the bhoys deserve to go through on their showing so far

I don’t think Lenny will look at it like that…..too dangerous a mindset. We will get what we earn rather than what we deserve.

As Clint Eastwood said to Gene Hackman in “Unforgiven” just before he blew his head off, “deserve’s got nuthin to do with it”.

We will get through IMO but the most difficult games have still to come.

  14. Celtic boss Neil Lennon is hopeful that key players will be fit for Tuesday’s Champions League clash at Benfica.

Striker Gary Hooper (hamstring), defender Thomas Rogne (calf) and winger James Forrest (groin) will definitely miss Saturday’s SPL clash at Aberdeen, but look set to fly on Monday to Portugal.

Skipper Scott Brown also looks like winning his fitness battle after an ongoing hip problem, while fellow midfielder Joe Ledley is fighting a knock he picked up in last weekend’s draw with St Johnstone.

Concerning the Pittodrie clash at the weekend, Lennon said: “Gary won’t make it. We are hoping he will start training on Sunday. Lassad Nouioui is back in the squad. Rogne will hopefully train on Sunday.

“Forrest, at first we thought it was a hamstring strain, but it looks like he has damaged a nerve. We are hoping that will settle down and he can travel with us on Monday.

“Brown and Ledley are doubts for Saturday but they should make Tuesday.”

  19. More bad news, bring back Sevco!!!

The Scottish Premier League have agreed a new two-year deal with BBC ALBA, which will see top-flight games broadcast live on the Gaelic television channel for the first time.

For this season and 2013/14, BBC ALBA will show three live SPL matches per season, with Gaelic language commentary, starting with the local derby between Ross County and Inverness on Wednesday, January 2.

There will also be delayed full match coverage of a further 35 games per season, normally shown at 5:30pm on Saturdays.

SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster said: “I am delighted to announce a new partnership with BBC ALBA that will for the first time see Clydesdale Bank Premier League matches broadcast live with Gaelic language commentary.

“This new partnership will allow us to reach far and wide into new audiences and communities across Scotland.

“The SPL already has two live television deals in place with Sky Sports and ESPN and we look forward to growing our relationship with BBC ALBA to promote Clydesdale Bank Premier League football, and the Gaelic language, even further over the next two seasons.”

Re the “joint sponsorship” deal being outwith our control.

We announced a deal with Tennent’s and they then went out and negotiated a similar deal with someone else.

Which meant we were jointly sponsored by that firm.

    Fine,that’s business,that’s commerce,that’s how it works.

  26. Celtic plc AGM

By: Mark Henderson on 16 Nov, 2012 15:36

IN the 125th year of the Club´s existence, Celtic plc held their Annual General Meeting at Celtic Park today and a positive, upbeat message prevailed throughout the proceedings.

Holding fort in his first AGM as Chairman was Ian Bankier and he described his first year in the job as ´incident-packed´.

And despite a host of challenging events, he said the last 12 months had also been a period of ´progression´, with a ´stable foundation´ going forward as the club staged an incredible fight back to claim the SPL title, before qualifying for the UEFA Champions League group stages.

“Incident-packed is the best way to describe the first year,” he said. “Day one was the day we went to Kilmarnock and were 3-0 down at half-time. We were quite significantly off the pace in the SPL and had just tumbled out of Europe. Things were looking quite difficult.

“We clawed that back, got back into Europe and had quite a good run. Then we had the complete disassembly of Rangers. That brought a whole set of new and interesting challenges for the business.

“We had to work out what our response would be, where to respond and if to respond. Little did I know that we would end season as title champions, and that in month of August, I would be unfurling flag with childhood hero, Sean Fallon.”

On the club´s financial results for the last financial year, the Chairman added:

“Results reflect strategy. To remind ourselves, the income we got last year was very similar to the year before, slightly down. Our operating expenses were slightly up but the difference was we didn’t make same profit from player trading in the last financial year that we did in the year before.

“The reason for that was we made a conscious decision in January not to dispose of players but to keep a strong squad with a view to get the maximum out of the Scottish season and a view of going into Europe. And that decision has been vindicated.

“The strategy we adopt is to maximise what we can do on the park within constraints of conservative and prudent management. And we do that by investing in youth, judicious trading of mature players and scouting for good talent across the world.

“You can´t look at it in isolation of one financial year. This is five-year rolling plan. Results we look at are perfectly in tune and in order with the strategy we´re employing.

“The straight and narrow for us is to maximise the advantages we have from Europe this year, spend our money well and keep that strategy on the rails.”

And he was also keen to pay tribute to the contribution of the supporters to the club´s success at home and abroad over recent times.

“The supporters have just been magnificent this year,” said the Chairman. “The key thing is that you have been in sync with the support. If you lose their hearts and minds you are in trouble.

“Peter, in particular, puts in a lot of effort into staying in touch with fans, understanding where they are coming from, making sure they understand what we are striving to achieve.

“They have conducted themselves with dignity, with no little humour. They have been noisy, colourful. They have been great.”

Celtic Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell, told members that club had made positive strides forward on and off the park in the past year.

“Last year was one of progression for club,” he said. “Although we made a loss, we enhanced the financial stability of the club and our debt levels are extremely manageable. We increased, significantly, the value of the squad and we have a stable foundation going forward.

“Winning the league was biggest high and great credit to Neil, Johan, Gary and the lads for bringing the title home.

“That has given us the key to the Champion League this year. Against Barcelona you saw what it meant to the club – an unmatchable atmosphere, unbelievable performance.”

This fitted into a long-term strategy initiated by the board around five or six years ago which saw increasing funds focused on the long-term.

“We built Lennoxtown which is a first-class facility,” said the Chief Executive. “We invested in recruitment, scouting, processes, technology, people, academy, sports science and performance analysis.

“The objective was to create Champions League players. We realised we couldn’t go and buy them because of the hyper inflation in transfer fees and wages, and it meant we had to do something different. We have a bit to go but think strategy is showing green shoots of success.”

The Chief Executive spoke on a number of subjects including the club´s ongoing commitment to charity, and he also said why the Club voted against the Rangers Newco SPL application, explaining that it was ´fundamental to us that the integrity of the game was upheld´, despite the financial consequences.

And he also reflected on the stunning UEFA Champions League victory over Barcelona and the importance of the Club participating in the competition.

“It´s where we want to be and where a club like Celtic should be,” added the Chief Executive. “It was a magnificent night. In my view, it was one of the best if not the best achievement here at Celtic Park in the Champions League, so credit to Neil and the lads.

“It was a fantastic night, particularly after the 125th anniversary celebrations the previous night, and the supporters were magnificent. The Barcelona directors actually commented they had seen nothing like it.”

And he also revealed there had been very early discussions at European level of the possibility of regional leagues, before praising the work of Neil Lennon and his backroom staff.

“Neil and the management team, are doing an excellent job,” said the Chief Executive. “Neil has progressed magnificently and ably supported by Gary and Johan, and he now has Danny McGrain there as well.

“We as a club are progressing, the team is progressing, and we are looking forward to hopefully an exciting future.”

There were 11 resolutions put forward at the meeting, nine by the board and two by members. And among those carried were the reappointment of Brian Duffy, Iain Livingston, Dermot Desmond and Tom Allison as company directors. The ordinary resolutions requested by members, regarding the club´s shirt sponsor and the possibility of having a supporters representative on the board went to a poll.

John Keane was appointed Honorary Chairman of the Celtic and Football Athletic Company to rich applause.

A lively, informative and constructive Q & A session followed the main business as members asked questions on a range of topics including seating arrangements in Champions League game, reports of victimisation of supporters, pricing of U12s´ season tickets, along with the manager and board´s thoughts on the rest of the season.

Afterwards, the Chairman thanked everyone for their attendance and support and brought a positive meeting to a close.

  27. I too was at the AGM today and certainly don’t quite understand the Ian Bankier bashing. He tried to bring a bit of humour to the affair and had a couple of cheeky pokes at his fellow board members who seemed to take it in good part as did the rest of the attendees.

Stirring up a fuss about nothing. I thought that was the MSM’s job….
