From David Marshall to Tony Watt

1317

Just days after The Beating of Barca in 2004 the youthful Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell presented teenage sensation, David Marshall, with a new contract, reward for his incredible goalkeeping performances against the Catalans.  Having made only a single first team appearance, in a cup game against (then) lower league opponents, David played the second half of the first leg against Ronaldinho & Co, then all of the second leg, without conceding a goal.

It Camp Nou performance was the most remarkable I’ve seen from a keeper.  After years looking for a solid performer to make the position his own, it looked like we had a new star.

A year later David had, if anything, regressed.  He remained first choice until after the start of season 2005-06 but Artur Boruc, for a while the genuine article, soon replaced him.  David was shipped out to Norwich before eventually settling at Cardiff City, where he has built a solid career, but his star never shone as brightly as we expected it to.  His Scottish contemporaries, Allan McGregor and Craig Gordon, both overtook him.

It is incredibly hard for a youth player to break into a team like Celtic in a position like goalkeeper, or striker, the pressure to deliver – every time – is so high, we are a whole lot more likely to introduce wingers.  The parallels between David Marshall and Tony Watt are remarkable, so far.

From the outside it’s hard to guess what went wrong for David at Celtic.  He lost his place at Celtic when he was just 20 and the trajectory of his career was never the same but 20 is still remarkably young for a keeper working at Champions League level.  Tony Watt is two years younger than David and he is in the considerably better position of being able to come on as substitute for sections of games, or to drop away for a few weeks, if necessary.

We should expect more fantastic splurges of form from the player but there will be frustrations and dips in form too.  He has the skill, speed and strength to make it.  With hard work and patience he stands an excellent chance.

I’m sure I was hearing something along the lines of…”70 years ago – two Canadian soldiers went to ibrokes and planted two blades of grass.” “70 years down the line….a Canadian consortium of business men will return to ibrokes to take the stadium !!!”

Did anyone hear anything along these lines ?

    I’ll reply later(If anybody responds ?)

    have to go out now.

    laters…

  3. Just logged on and not really read back I know we have always hated the joint sponsorship but to be associated with this mob in any way could be damaging to the clubs name.I think the board will only react when the money by being associated with them outweighs the money coming in from the sponsorship. Personally I see it as a connection no matter how slight that they need much more than we do, in fact we do not need it at all. If Celtic sell say Wanyama for upwards of 20 million then I think the fans might be heard.

  4. Maybe for 67,or for whoever was/is suffering from lower back pain as it is not sixtaeseven:- you were on previously about a bad back, I read through some helpful answers but have only just came back on net. What I recommend (after 40 years to similar in lower back) is obvious and simple, which we sometimes miss. When lying down with legs flat the back is arched.Between buttocks and shoulder blades no support! In Thailand bolsters are commonplace so I put under the knees,on floor and even poor mattresses the back flattens out,no tension on spine. When sitting support the back hollow with whatever you can stuff there, try and keep the gut in.

The rest (when able) is as stated before, down to developing the core muscles surrounding the spine . I use an exercise wheel but take care when starting up,only as far as is easy, don’t over stretch and be in control. A few a day strengthens so much, shoulders and arms as well.

If you don’t know this already it should help over time, hope so.

  5. ”I don’t believe the Premier League are hostile towards it because I think it’s a generalization,“ Charles Green said. ”Speak to Manchester United. They are not hostile to Rangers joining.“

”We are not in favour of it at all. We are against it,“ Manchester United spokesman Phil Townsend said. ”Our view is it’s the English Premier League and should remain that way.“

  6. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

Well, decided to play the game today,

asked my question away from the floor

Have the club been issuing personal details of supporters

    Ian Bankier, told me NO

Only time they give details is, if the supporter is involved in a criminal investigation, such as violence or flares,

Mr Bankier treated me well, appeared to have sympathy with my point which allowed me to relax and think about the best way to proceed.

My next, is to write and ask

    a) Howmany season ticket and other supporters in section 111, have been implicated in a criminal investigation, that resulted, in their details being issued as a result of the accusation.

    b) Howmany season ticket and other supporters in section 111 personal details were requested as a result of ongoing investigations initiated external to Celtic park.

    c) Howmany season ticket and other supporters in section 111, where their details have been issued as a result of an accusation, have been charged as a result of any criminal investigation, for football or any public order related offence initiated at Celtic Park.

    d) Howmany season ticket holders of section 111 Celtic football club have the club issued personal details.

    e) Howmany season ticket holders or other supporters in section 111, have been found guilty of any of the football or public order related offence, as result of the criminal investigations, that required their details being issued by Celtic football club.

    f) Howmany supporters in section 111 whose details have been issued by Celtic football club, have either been found guilty or charged of any football or public order offences

Hopefully I wont be the only tim asking these questions of the guardians of our club.

I hope they are demanding these questions are asked,

  7. OK, lets do it.

    Euro leagues are go!!!

    Rangers and Celtic (sic).

Just show your European Club Licence at the door.

Whats that Charles, no licence? No problem. just show your last three years audited accounts over there and they’ll issue you one………………..

  8. Sixtaeseven

Surely the context has to be taken into account?

Celtic are out of the CL are losing money, have sealed a deal that prevents further deterioration in the players we can get, are held to ransom and you think the answer that the majority of supporters, desperate to top the hun would want, should have been No?

Given the criticism for failing performance v criticism for a joint sponsorship deal and given the folk being criticised are going to get criticised anyway, which of the lesser of two evils would you expect them to pick.

Sometimes life only offers two bad choices and there is no thanks for taking either. But before condemning lets take all factors into account whilst mounted on our high horses.

It seems the English press into his BS…yet he still gets a free run aided by the MSM in Scotland

As I’ve said previously …compare and contrast the media reaction against Wee Fergus and their obsequious fawning of Green…..particularly as Fergus had a credible plan

  13. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on

It really is quite pathetically sad when pundits promote the idea that a dead club is going to be invited to join a European League ……….. And to actually believe that a club playing in SFL3, and currently threatened with liquidation, is going to be competing for a CL place within the next 10 years is just silly ……… how are they going to put a positive spin on BDO selling iPox to compensate the creditors..?………sillee hughee………

  14. How many huns did it take to change a light bulb.

    Aulheid

With due respect – and I do respect your posts and look forward to your posts here and elsewhere – I said:

“It’s worth remembering where we were about a year ago – thanks goodness that Antony Stokes dargged us back into that match vs Killie.

The context was indeed different early last season.”

I don’t see how that merits:

“Surely the context has to be taken into account? …

… But before condemning lets take all factors into account whilst mounted on our high horses.”

It is true I, like most, don’t have all the factors at my disposal.

However, there is a gut feeling, which isn’t at all recent, that the joint sponsorship ain’t right, no matter the amount of cash it may bring in.

Hope that clarifies (and I wouldn’t know how to get on a horse, far less a high one).

    ;o)
