Gary Hooper and Celtic strategy

796

Sky have reported that Celtic have accepted a £5m bid from QPR for Gary Hooper.  Gary is in the final year of his contract and has declined to sign a new deal which has been no offer for almost a year now.

It will surprise some, perhaps including the player, that an English Premier League club have not made a move, but QPR have the cash to compete with most in the top flight, so the financial rewards for the player will be comparable.

For Celtic the proposition is simple, if the player is not going to extend his stay beyond this season, and an offer matching valuation is received, it is better they know where they stand as early in the transfer window as possible.  We’ll know soon enough if the player wants to move.  As we said about Victor, it’s always hard to lose a good one, but I’ve yet to meet someone who would walk away from a deal north of £50k per week, so fair play to Gary, whatever he decides.

Neil Lennon had never hid his admiration for the player but the Celtic strategy is clear enough.  If Gary decides to move it’s all about finding the right replacement, they days of slavishly watching players run down their contracts are over.

Have you done your thing for 1254125 yet?  The supporters group working with Celtic Charity proposed we get as many as possible signed up to running a 10k, hoping each person can raise £125.  We’ve teamed up with The Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6 October and extended the scope a bit, to include those who don’t quite have the legs for 10k.

On Saturday 5 October, The Great Scottish Run also organise supporting events you can enter and raise your £125:

100m Toddler Dask (0-5 yrs)
1.5k Mini Run (5-8 yrs)
2.5k Junior Run (9-15 yrs)
Family Mile (Adults and children from 3 yrs)

If you are particularly fit, you can enter the Half Marathon on the Sunday.  It is going to be a great family weekend.  If you know a kid who is keen to participate and get involved in 1254125, let them know.

If the legs won’t support you for 10k, you can gingerly make your way along the Family Mile.

To sign up you need to register with The Great Scottish Run first.  Register here if you are participating in the 10k or Half Marathon, and here if you are participating in the Saturday events, then register here with Celtic Charity (scroll down the page until you see Great Scottish Run).

Just over 10 weeks to go, get your application in and get every Celtic fan you know with a pair of trainers to sign up.  I’m doing the 10k, so will be out running tonight…….

“aint his great gramps Greek . makes sense ta me.”

    He’s German.

The ole Greek myth was created because he was busy with Lizzy so soon after the war.

  2. If Gary Hooper does not sign an extension to his contract then he MUST be sold before the end of the transfer window. The Celtic Board would be failing in their duty to manage the club properly if they did not.

If the asking price is now set then let the other interested parties come to the table.

I’m surprised that a team like West Ham have not come in for Gary. He is tailor made for them. He is a bit Tony Cottee like in that his name is Gary Hooper and he comes with a guarantee of goals. He will be more prolific than that perpetually injured Andy Carroll. Has been before will be again.

I’ve liked the boy since he arrived but if he isn’t in it for the long haul then time to rearrange the squad.

Thanks for the goals Gary and Best Wishes….hope you get your dream of playing for Ingerlund but hope yeeze get gubbed every time.

  3. George, disappointing, I thought they might have shown some initiative with his future title in mind and called him ‘Kong’.

Don’t you think PL has a boss?

So he’ll be sacked if we don’t make it to the CL group stages because if he’s harming the club by making poor decisions on transfers in then his “boss” will have no other option.

Will he be sacked if we fail and if not why not?

  5. TET

Agree PL will get the blame (even if we sign a £5M striker + a £5M midfielder) and we don’t qualify.

Likewise if we qualify – it will probably be ‘Pistol Pete’ the poker player (lucky bassa).

He is in a ‘Nae win/ Nae win’ situation and he will get to do it all over again at the next transfer window!

  6. By the way we still have our biggest European goal machine ready and raring to go in Sami! He is the one any opposition will be wary of IMO

DD will not bother his tash about the day to day running of the club, PL will have a remit, and he is going about it the way he sees fit.

I, nor anyone else have to agree with his every decision, in this instance, I do believe he is taking a massive gamble.

If we fail to make the group stages, I very much doubt DD will sack him, but he will still be to blame imo.

I am not advocating spending cash we don’t have, all I and many others are asking for is to replace who we are losing, our top scorer and our best midfielder.

I suppose for board lovers that’s too much to ask for.

Gary you’ll never be a Jimmy McGrory.

  11. Who is to blame for our unsuccessful signings in recent years?

PL or whatever manager asked him to purchase those players, and that includes NFL?

PL is on a loser every time in the eyes of certain sections of the support.

PL is gambling that we make the groups without spending.

If it works, aye, he is a hero, it’s just no a gamble I would take, especially when there is no need, we can well afford to replace those who are departing.

That is without the wages saved on all the others already gone this window.

As I said, I hope his gamble pays off.

  14. EDB

PL has a crap job, he is the one who has to please everybody…the manager, his boss, the players, the staff, and most of all the supporters, he is well paid for it mind you, but he has a thankless task, I just wish at times he wouldn’t gamble so much when there is no need to.

He could give the team a much better chance of the CL riches, without throwing away millions, just reinvest some of what we have made on say Vic.all the rest can sit in the bank and look good at the AGM.

  18. Steinreignedsupreme………..Gary Hooper going to QPR is a shock to me and returning to the Championship from which he came to Celtic. No more fancy trips to the continent to face the cream of Europe – you could be heading to Sweden in a couple of weeks Gary. Hoops has ambitions to play for England and if he achieves this playing for QPR then pigs will fly – unless of course Harry The Red becomes England manager. Let’s face facts, it’s only teams like ROI, Scotland and Wales that pick players from the Champioship and lower.

Gary was not a big player for us in the Champions League, it was Georgios the Greek and thankfully he is still in our gang. I like Gary, he’s a good player and would love to see him play in the important games we have in the next month, perhaps Harry The Red might do us a favour in this respect before he heads for QPR.

  19. TET

I do understand what you say but there’s hardly a long line of quality players prepared to come to our shores and particularly at this time with no CL involvement guaranteed.

I think we have interest in good players but those players and their agents are calling the shots as to where they end up.

  20. sorry to see hooper go – hope to God my son turns out to be a good footballer – I could retire early on his loose change

  21. Bye, bye Gary Hooper.

We plucked you from the Championship, and now you plonked yourself right back in it.

Money wins over ambition, but at least we can be clear. Banging in some CL goals tihs season on a 2 year deal would have catapulted him into top-half EPL sights for sure.

When the QPR gravy train rumbles into the buffers around Christmas we may just get him back at cut-price next year.

    If we want/need him…

  22. EDB

Sadly I have to agree that we are not the top choice when it comes to where players want to be.

It was considered insensitive … and more importantly a risk for Liz to be openly marrying a German so soon after the war.

None of Phil’s sisters were invited to the wedding because people might have asked ‘how come they are German and he isn’t?’

The British state will always look after the establishment and the Royal Family exist on web of lies.

They celebrate a traditional German Christmas – presents on Christmas Eve and stuff, even to this day.

I have no problem with Germans incidentally – but I don’t like parasites.

Phil’s background will come out eventually, probably in one of those 50- year rule on information being released.

  27. Gary obviously puts money before career if he goes to QPR.

More chance of playing for England at Celtic in the Champions League than QPR in the championship, a league he left to come to us!!!

I suppose we can expect no loyalty these days, however , no matter where he goes , he will never grace a stage better than Paradise.

I am grateful for his performances in the Hoops but he didn’t deliver and let me down many times.

In no way is he in the same class of previous talents who have left ( Dalglish, Nicholas, Collins,McLair et al )

In a couple of weeks he will be a distant memory and we will ( hopefully)have replaced him with another hero!!

Ps Was dozing on the chair there and saw the Beast sitting with Neil Doncaster and John Collins commenting on the new SPFL.

  28. I propose new rules for putative signing discussions:

    1) Name the player. OK Celtic have got a scouting dept not us but aimless exhortations to spend are hardly worth discussing.

    2) Name how much you think they would cost and the sort of wages they would expect any team to pay them.

    3) Give an opinion as to how likely the players club is to release them at this point in their contract or reasons why they want to sell now (i.e other club just bought Falcao, they are in year 4 of their contract). Are they really available right now?

    4) Do they have or would they have other offers? For the same wages would they choose Celtic? (i.e. they want to play in CL and current club is not in Europe).

    5) Finally are they better than what we have?

I’m sure if we all stick to this simple plan we can have a far more productive exchange of views…

If Hooper leaves for £5m, this may not be the great piece of business being hailed by so many.

    There is another theory.

We earned c£20million from last years CL.

Hooper staying with Celtic enhances our chances of qualification for the group stages, and access to this pot of cash, 4 times higher than any fee QPR or another club will pay for Gary.

Hooper should stay, we should sell on 31st Aug if we dont qualify – we would need to be prepared to gamble part of the £5m to achieve a £20m reward.

Good theory? I like it. I think it could work.

Wish it was my own theory. It isnt. Paul Brennan takes the credit. Something seems to have changed his mind since he posted it though?…..

Hooper was a big player for us in the Champions League – he buried two half-chances in the games against Spartak Moscow … very important goals.

Samaras was also a big player for us. I like them both.

They are completely different types of player and both vital to our success in the past couple of years.
