There are two opposing world views: one where people call for unaffordable money [those figures would be]to be spent because fans of a football club are “desperate”, the other where people want football clubs to spend what they can afford.
The latter group remember football’s crash-and-liquidate days – and learned the lessons. The former also remember the crash-and-liquidate days, but they are impervious to lessons.
We can debate what the size of an affordable spend is, but a couple of parameters have to be observed:
If it increases the cost base to such an extent that a reversal on the field would plunge the club into financial disarray, it’s unaffordable.
Players need to be appropriate for the environment – with neighbouring clubs earning £100m each season from TV deals, only players of a certain profile will play for a club with a considerably smaller wage bill (and turnover).
We live in a time when Scots Steven Naismith went for £8.5m (1 goal in 9 starts) and Ross McCormack went for £11m. These are common values for this calibre of player. We all want Celtic to improve, but that will not be achieved by spending unsuitable or unaffordable money. Packie, think back to Valentine’s Day 2012 and add a dose of perspective.
Get better at scouting, get fitter, improve the coaching – and spend everything you can afford, not any more. That’s the model for Celtic.

Interesting that you mention scouting Paul. We have seen with Leicester what can be achieved when recruitment is spot on. My own view is that it’s time for Donald Park to move on and to completely overhaul that department. Hopefully this will come hand in hand with our new Manager, who will settle for nothing less.

Fact is, Celtic has considerable cash to use currently. Considerable cash.
Question is: Will we use it?
Like many others, I’m pretty much done with the “just enough” approach. We need to use the resources we have (and no more) or we will lose what we’ve accumulated.
You might coin the phrase “Accumulate to speculate” to this end.
Time for Celtic to embark upon a new project. The previous one has diminished us, both in terms of our status as a Football Club, and in terms of the scale of the busness enterprise.
Use the dough, we might lose some of it, that’s true. And we might not. That’s the inherent risk in business.
Don’t use it, and it’ll be lost backfilling a trading deficit. There’s nothing more certain.
Key to it is the judgement of the fellow who is appointed as the next Manager.
Buy well, buy once.

Is there any precedent for a Club being allowed to participate in a league outwith its Home Association territory on the basis that it is so vastly superior to all the other home clubs as to meaningful competition impossible?
I agree we can’t and shouldn’t spend that kind of money. However, it’s depressing and transparent that the strategy of the club (Deila, Collins and now this blog) is managing down expectations in this way. After the season we’ve just had the response from the club seems to be more of the same.
Who would buy an expensive season ticket to watch players below the calibre of Ross McCormack and an ageing Steven Naismith? That’s a pretty underwhelming sales pitch.
It also begs the question why we need to be paying our CEO top dollar when we’re such a (permanent) footballing backwater. Why not remunerate the CEO in proportion to the rest of the club?
Is he an an exception because of his remarkable record of success? Appointing Tony Mowbray andRonny Deila, whilst taking a desperate and lucky punting Neil Lennon? Bean counter/ Director of Football extraordinaire? Contriving to build a football operation that can lose to a bankrupt and garbage Sevco? Sits on his hands in response to a blatantly rigged game in this country?
If we’re downsizing let’s apply it consistently across the club, not just in the bits the fans actually care about.

I’ll agree with you that we must improve our scouting. And “perhaps” that of the person who directs it.
But if you seriously think that we do not have to take a one or two season hit on transfer fees,I wonder which planet you are on.

SOT @ 11.46…I spent some time in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank and in all of these places you will always find the good, the bad and the downright ugly. However, what mostly struck me was the level of poverty and deprivation in Gaza…also, in Jerusalem, the city born and bred Arab truly is a 3rd class citizen…

I would be happy for celtic to provide and deliver my £7k-£10k a year for my groceries. Add to that my car, house and life insurance. And mortgage (if it’s value). I know they’ve dipped their toe in the water with ‘celtic’ credit cards in the past, but its been very poorly rolled out.
the lack of imagination at celtic is appalling, despite the FTSE100 wages being flung at PL.
The big supermarkets will encroach on everything they can. Started with groceries, then takes the market from newsagents, sandwich shops, key cutters, card shops, flower shops, pizza takeaways, clothes shops, banking, insurance……..etc
Celtic could do this to the supermarkets; it has the capital and customer base. I could see scenarios where 20,000 fans are spending an extra £10k per year through the club, if the club allows them. Everyone would begin doing it, but it would dilute the TV money advantage other leagues have.
If we are ever going to become great again, in european terms, we have to multiply our income ten fold. Not go back to the 80s.

Well, that’s a great plan, yet it was supposed to be the plan when Ronny took over twas it not?
We need to get better at implementation, we’ve had many good strategies over the last decade. These have either failed or been partially successful.
Let’s face it, there a some great things going on but overall we are failing to deliver. I’d like the new Manager to have a holistic view of the Club.
Which to me means as well as sorting our first team oot (in time for UCL qualification, obviously:), we have a total restructure of Lennoxtown.

The essential point, the one you are steadfastly choosing to ignore, is that the state of Israel was imposed on people against their will.
I don’t feel there is much wrong in saying we don’t need to spend £30m on players to enable us to beat teams already with a fraction of our budget who often get the better of us.
