God love (and save us from ) Packie Bonner

God love Packie Bonner, spend “£20m to £30m to bring those quality players the fans are desperate for”.

There are two opposing world views: one where people call for unaffordable money [those figures would be]to be spent because fans of a football club are “desperate”, the other where people want football clubs to spend what they can afford.

The latter group remember football’s crash-and-liquidate days – and learned the lessons. The former also remember the crash-and-liquidate days, but they are impervious to lessons.

We can debate what the size of an affordable spend is, but a couple of parameters have to be observed:

If it increases the cost base to such an extent that a reversal on the field would plunge the club into financial disarray, it’s unaffordable.

Players need to be appropriate for the environment – with neighbouring clubs earning £100m each season from TV deals, only players of a certain profile will play for a club with a considerably smaller wage bill (and turnover).

We live in a time when Scots Steven Naismith went for £8.5m (1 goal in 9 starts) and Ross McCormack went for £11m. These are common values for this calibre of player. We all want Celtic to improve, but that will not be achieved by spending unsuitable or unaffordable money. Packie, think back to Valentine’s Day 2012 and add a dose of perspective.

Get better at scouting, get fitter, improve the coaching – and spend everything you can afford, not any more.  That’s the model for Celtic.

3 players at approx £4-5m each, what wage would they demand? What age would they be? What happens if the 3 of them are injured at the same time?

If you fail at Celtic you are effectively worthless. Cannot see how we could accumulate 7+ million on players who are “dross”

  4. The love-in the left in this country has with the Palestinians makes me nauseous.

Fact is the UN proposed a two-state solution after the Mandate was passed to the UN by Britain in 1947 and it was rejected by the Arabs. Note, not the “Palestinians,” they weren’t calling themselves that until the 1960’s.

The League of Nations Palestine mandate given to Britain after WWI included modern day Jordan as well as Israel, and the British gave Transjordan to the Hashemites as a reward for their support against the Ottomans in WWI. So more than half of the Palestine mandate was given to the Arabs before Israel was created.

After the Arabs rejected partition in 1947, the Arabs attacked Israel and failed in their attempt to wipe it out. Gaza was occupied by Egypt and what is now called the West Bank by Jordan. There was no Palestinian movement calling for the Egyptians or the Jordanians to hand them back to the “Palestinians” then.

Fact is, the Arabs wanted to exterminate Israel and that’s what Hamas’ charter still calls for.

I’m not going to say Israel is perfect, no state is. and there are faults on both sides. But it is the only democratic country in the region, surrounded by hostile Islamists, which is what Hamas are.

20% of Israel’s population is Arab Muslim and they have equality under the law, which is more than can be said for minorities in any of the Arab countries that surround them. If you support equality for women, homosexuals and ethnic minorities, you should be supporting Israel, not the Palestinians, who would oppress them all.

By the way, I think the players we had were good enough to beat Malmo, Maribor etc.

It’s the implementation from the first team coach that was lacking.

Try telling that to the Arabs in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, or Ramallah, or Bethlehem…or those Arabs whose lives have been ruined by the settlements. Johansen has over a year on his contract, so we’d get a couple of million. Forrest only has 6 months, Commons a year, so a million between them.

Ambrose and Izaguire, two experienced international defenders so we’d get at least a couple of million the pair of them.

If Bitton is one of our better players then we are fecked!!

  18. eddieinkirkmichael on

All this talk about buying players is great, not convinced myself though as I feel that we need to develops our own and give them a chance if we really want to progress as a club.

The problem with this approach though is the fans who don’t do development. We want to win every game and are not prepared to let any coach truly implement a new ethos. This isn’t just a problem at our club it’s cultural, go down any public park at the weekend and you see it first hand the win at all cost mentality of us Scots.

Change can be a painful process, unfortunately the combination of supporter demands combined with outside influences such as the MSM mean we are unlikely to embrace a real change in our footballing philosophy unfortunately.

  19. ernie lynch on 10th May 2016 1:17 pm

Not against the wishes of all the people who lived there, no. There has been a continuous Jewish presence in Israel for centuries and the Arab population were offered their own state too, which they rejected in favour of a war they lost.

PackIe Bonner nice man not the brightest … That said he has a point in as much as we’ve wAsted £10m+ on failed striker project over the last few years. Within the current bloated squad there is probably at least £10m worth of excess to requirement players. The main team could shed a few players to raise £5m

What Id rather have than ‘projects’ that don’t qualify us for easy Champion’s League £15m is a slimmer squad of better quality.

33 players with a clear no1and 2 and a youth prospect as back up.

Sorry Paul67 this article is another PL PR effort. I reads as Lawwell sounds .. Again.

  24. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

We have had the £3-4m players and they appear to have been signings from specific agents, to a man they were duds, I’m beginning to believe they were used as a”told you so” to use against people who want a bit better. Every player is a gamble and we’re going to prove it. We spent how much on Beaurigter or what ever his name is, that was us being taught a lesson, look what might happen. And then used that to try and discredit anyone who questioned the chosen strategy of downsizing.

  26. The last two leaders on cqn tells you everything you need to know as a Celtic fan.

    1) the board remain convinced they are doing a great job. Hence the arrogance of the G.O.D.

    2) the strategy isn’t changing.little money will be spent and big bonuses will be paid to Peter.

    3) nothing will be said about cheating, corruption, res12 etc.. We are complicit.

No lessons have been learnt and the board are gambling that the lure of racism will be sufficient.

    I appreciate the optimism.

Izzy is an international for Hondouras not Brazil. One of their internationals was papping himself around Scotland before signing for Hibs on a bosman.

I genuinely cannot see anybody paying serious money for Efe, who is more well known for mistakes than anything else. He’s a figure of fun in this country.

I could only see us getting that kind of money from China. Nowhere else.

When the new transfer window opens, Johansen will be starting his final year of contract. I doubt we’d get 2 million for him if he had 3 years left considering how poor he has been.

I don’t think we’d get a penny out of Forrest. 500k for Commons is probably more realistic.

Biton has been excellent until returning from injury. He’s looked lethargic and people have been on his case. I think he’s got real potential to be a key player next season.

By the way, I’m not overly keen about selling Izzy as well. I’d keep him around.

  29. eddieinkirkmichael on

BLANTYRETIM- hopefully a good few of the dead wood will be gone in the summer, I would personally sacrifice new signings if it meant paying some of the imposters off and having a leaner squad made up of a few young players from development squad.

Even without strengthening I still thing with a decent coach we would still win the league and should qualify for CL group stages.

Unless I am wrong Rangers are the only club in the Uk to have been liquidated in the last 5 years or so?

Their liability on taxes killed them. Why are we even comparing present day Celtic to the basket case?

Why are we even considering benchmarks with falsely inflated and over valued English clubs. It’s not even an argument. I don’t see a clamour to spend on your Ross Mccormacks etc. I see a clamour to bring in Celtic players and not 10s of stock piled medium talent. Let’s look elsewhere. Aye very good. Let’s look at the waste of money we have built up and then look at how it should have been spent.

Now that Rangers have returned will we still have a 10 million pound black hole in the budget or has that miraculously fallen?

Celtic is a football club and should be treated as such otherwise those with a business interest lose money on their precious shares. The sooner that is realised the better.

  36. CHAIRBHOY

It’s the gap between the development side being paraded round Celtic Park uneaten all season, and the transition to the first team.

Kieran Tierney is a kind of token tim, fix the gap and you fix Celtic.

You won’t do it with a ‘superior budget’ that gets you a Carlton Cole or a Derk Boeriggter

Most of the bhoys will be freed to look for other clubs.
