God love (and save us from ) Packie Bonner

God love Packie Bonner, spend “£20m to £30m to bring those quality players the fans are desperate for”.

There are two opposing world views: one where people call for unaffordable money [those figures would be]to be spent because fans of a football club are “desperate”, the other where people want football clubs to spend what they can afford.

The latter group remember football’s crash-and-liquidate days – and learned the lessons. The former also remember the crash-and-liquidate days, but they are impervious to lessons.

We can debate what the size of an affordable spend is, but a couple of parameters have to be observed:

If it increases the cost base to such an extent that a reversal on the field would plunge the club into financial disarray, it’s unaffordable.

Players need to be appropriate for the environment – with neighbouring clubs earning £100m each season from TV deals, only players of a certain profile will play for a club with a considerably smaller wage bill (and turnover).

We live in a time when Scots Steven Naismith went for £8.5m (1 goal in 9 starts) and Ross McCormack went for £11m. These are common values for this calibre of player. We all want Celtic to improve, but that will not be achieved by spending unsuitable or unaffordable money. Packie, think back to Valentine’s Day 2012 and add a dose of perspective.

Get better at scouting, get fitter, improve the coaching – and spend everything you can afford, not any more.  That’s the model for Celtic.

Well some will say Paul67 is just a board mouth peace delivering a message in order to lower expectations of our support.Myself I think he is just speaking common sense we must live within our income we cannot go toe to toe in transfer dealings with EPL clubs one club in Glasgow tried that and we know what happened to them. The clubs over the past seasons who have knocked us out of Europe have not spent vast fortunes on players they just had better management and better systems than we had we need to stop our bulk buying policy and buy more prudently while bringing more of our own players from our expensive youth system. H.H.

  2. I thoroughly enjoyed Sundays game up to and around the point were we stopped playing at 3-0.

That game was literally an example of our season as a whole. it couldn’t have been demonstrated any better.

Game aside, the Justice for the 96 display and thank you to the support was awesome and emotional. Good to see a couple of lads I know on the park being afforded the privilege of carrying the banner. Well done for that deserved honour HT.

Great to meet up and catch up with a few of the lhads and lhassies pre game too. That’s the stuff I really miss not attending.

Congrats to Celtic and the bhoys for 5-in-a-row.

Now it’s time to strip the squad of the rubble and employ the quality over quantity approach.

Another year of excusing investment based on a Hun liquidation would be disastrous. It’d be absolute bonkers. the ‘look see wjhat happened to him approach’ does my trumpet in. We supposedly have very intelligent businessmen on our board. Surely these guys can between them come up with a plan that finds a way to change the strategy and invest without it being illegal or taking us anywhere near the precipice that saw the Hun die. If the can’t then they should GTF! Because they are not capable businessmen.

Bitton is one of the best players at the club. It’s clear though that his performances have dropped considerably since he signed his new, lucrative and long-term contract.

The new contract is indicative of the enquiries Celtic have received for him, and the confidence the club has that he’s got what it takes.

A new manager, a new focus, and we’ll see an accomplished player emerge.

You should have a look at the market value of our players on Transfermarkt if you thinks I’m being optimistic!! :-)

    ____

    That website is pretty useless.

The point is, unless we sell to England we cannot get any money for our players. Teams on the continent are only interested in loan deals or negligible fees.

How much did we recoup for Scepovic? Pukki? Balde? Zaluska? Frindjonsson? Boerrigter? Murphy? Rogne? Bangura?

The only non-English transfer I can think of that generated any cash was Tony Watt.

It’s true that China might be interested in offering some cash for our players. It’s a new market. Let’s see.

  6. If you use fees from Celtic Wiki then only Simunovic, Pukki & Boerrigter have cost £3m in last 6 years. No one above that. Two flops and a sicknote!

  7. If all had went to plan Ronny would have been elevated to the manager’s position this summer and Lenny possibly to director of football, but as the wee Ayrshire fornicator and bevvy merchant said “the best laid plans” etc.

However, that idea fell flat on its face when Lenny baled oot on us, why, well not as first aired he saw the budget or he wanted out of the west of Scotland fishbowl as he’s back here living and wants his old job back.

Mibbees he thought the grass was greener down south, no matter what we are again left scrambling for a new manager, which might have happened anyway if the Ronny plan hadn’t panned out, we’ll never know.

Agree completely. KT should have Been broken into the first team last season with last 20-25 min spells given the physical endurance required of this role.

And the burden shared in reverse this season.

I have never seen any evidence that Bitton is an average footballer never mind one of the clubs best.

Have sayed v consistently he is a flatterer.

Our struggles this season were no surprise to me considering the central role he occupies in the team.

I fail to see what a managerial change would add to his potency.

As I’ve previously stated in the first half of 1-1 draw with Ross county I specifically took his stats to see wether I was being harsh on him.

Of 9 forward passes only two were to Celtic players.

The other apps 14 were sideways and backwards.

He was wrong side of his man frequently and twice this created County chances.

He also committed his usual obligatory foul Ito give them a free kick in dangerous area.

That is a snapshot of most of his performances this season.

Is it any wonder we’ve struggled with his central role being pivotal to success?

    The SFA: Fit for SFA

    Posted On 10 May, 2016 – By lostbhoys – With 4 Comments

CWDMIncredibly, this blog isn’t about the recent ‘Anyone but Celtic’ performances of Alan Muir and Bobby Madden. There has been a recent flurry of chatter about corporate governance in the Scottish game particular to the Scottish Football Association role in the EBT inquiry and Resolution 12. Information on Resolution 12 is about to be released by Celtic and The fantastic Res 12 guys who have fought it constantly so let’s have a close look at the SFA in general regarding EBT et al.

Folk who have been following this since 2010/11 won’t have been surprised by the Off Shore Game’s revelations as it as they have been well known in various circles for at least four years now. Similarly, everyone knows Rangers cheated with EBT, everyone knows they did it to gain a sporting advantage and, certainly, everyone who as seen or read The Asterisk Years knows that Lord Nimmo-Smith is one of David Murray’s men.

It’s important to focus on the SFA in all this and, whisper it, this is the one area I take the side of Rangers (IL). The SFA knew from the start that Rangers were doing a tax avoidance scheme. Their first dabble was when they signed Paul Gascoigne was signed in 1995 and he already was having his Lazio wages paid into a tax avoidance scheme in Jersey. Incredibly, it was Craig Whyte who first uncovered this when he saw details of the Italian tax authorities claim against Rangers over the transfer of Gascoigne.

None of this was ever reported. The SFA were fully aware of this. The same SFA who were, at exactly the same time, delaying the transfer of Jorge Cadete.

The EBT went into full swing when the last brick was laid at the new Celtic Park. Rangers knew their debt was spiralling and that their rival was about to start pulling in 12,000 more supporters than they did at home games.

Again, the SFA were fully aware of it.

So it went it on until at one point, 2004/05, they were hundreds of millions in debt and fielding a team entirely of cheats yet still no one batted an eyelid.

So in 2009, when HMRC finally got wind of the Rangers EBT scheme, there was a problem. HMRC took this problem to the SFA who, in the parlance of our times, shat themselves. They immediately went to Rangers and Martin Bain and said “Hey, what have you naughty boys doing with this EBT scheme?” and Bain told them what anyone would “The same thing we have been telling you about for years”

The SFA had just thrown Rangers under the bus.

It also key to note that the SFA informed every member club, through lawyer Rod MacKenzie, of what was happening.

    Except one.

It was March 2012, a full three years after the SFA knew about the HMRC investigation, that Celtic realised they had been kept in the dark about this investigation and it was Eric Riley who stated this at meeting with the SFA, with much fury it has to be said,

It is therefore staggering that Campbell Ogilvie, the man who administered the EBT scheme, would then become President of the SFA. Or is it? Is it really?

I’ve seen mention by various journalists that they can’t touch this because of “legalities” which, not to put t0 fine a point on it, is bollocks. There’s ways to do it, it’s the same way I told all of them who watched The Asterisk Years and it is summed up by one sentence “Ask the question”

Similarly, I do the same to you, are the SFA fit for purpose? Better yet, have they ever been?

    Paul
