God love (and save us from ) Packie Bonner

God love Packie Bonner, spend “£20m to £30m to bring those quality players the fans are desperate for”.

There are two opposing world views: one where people call for unaffordable money [those figures would be]to be spent because fans of a football club are “desperate”, the other where people want football clubs to spend what they can afford.

The latter group remember football’s crash-and-liquidate days – and learned the lessons. The former also remember the crash-and-liquidate days, but they are impervious to lessons.

We can debate what the size of an affordable spend is, but a couple of parameters have to be observed:

If it increases the cost base to such an extent that a reversal on the field would plunge the club into financial disarray, it’s unaffordable.

Players need to be appropriate for the environment – with neighbouring clubs earning £100m each season from TV deals, only players of a certain profile will play for a club with a considerably smaller wage bill (and turnover).

We live in a time when Scots Steven Naismith went for £8.5m (1 goal in 9 starts) and Ross McCormack went for £11m. These are common values for this calibre of player. We all want Celtic to improve, but that will not be achieved by spending unsuitable or unaffordable money. Packie, think back to Valentine’s Day 2012 and add a dose of perspective.

Get better at scouting, get fitter, improve the coaching – and spend everything you can afford, not any more.  That’s the model for Celtic.

TRAD88. The bookies are assuming Celtic have been talking to Roy Keane and that the talks are going well they had him at 4/1 before suspending betting. However we will have to wait and see. H.H.

    =======

Yeah – assuming being the operative word ;)

However, they must have taken a significant amount of cash on Keane to suspend betting rather than just put him up to 1/3 fav or likewise

    Keane’s record isnae that bad

He got Sunderland promoted after picking them up in the bottom three. He kept them up in his first season.

When he got the Ipswich job, they were skint and he is the first one to admit they were a bad fit for him.

He ain’t the messiah but I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Keane the manager yet. He hasn’t found the right club.

You could argue with us having more last 16s post MON than during his time, we did kick on.

The generation of last 16’s you envisage simply would not have happened, and hasn’t happened for any team outside of the absolute elite. If you truly think we could be kicking it with Barca, Bayern, Chelsea, Man U etc all while being stuck in little old Scotland, then I’m sorry but I don’t really think you have a grasp on the reality of modern European football.

Money talks and those boys all get 10s of millions from domestic football media, in addition to the 10s of millions from CL. We get c£2M from domestic media.

In a very, very good year we turnover c£70m. Man Utd’s turnover for 2015 = £433M. Real £460M. Even Everton at 20th in the Deloitte money list for 2015 were doing £120M.

For me, Peter Lawwell came back in September 2003. MoN left in May 2005. The job was handed to WGS. When Strachan left we had Mowbray, NFL (who did well but was an emergency appointment). We then moved on to RD.

All of this goes back to Lawwell’s appointment in 2003. Whether he’s just been implementing policy or whatever.IMO

As Paul67 indicates, get better at scouting, fitness and coaching. It doesn’t make any mention of the executive functions at Celtic. At least we have that 100% correct??

Who’s ultimately responsible for the scouting and coach recruitment in our current model?

    TBB,

Going on signings of “Celtic first team players”, I’d say developing them has been more successful considering how far standards have fallen, they simply prefer foreign low quality to home grown.

I agree, and I think the true testament to how good the academy is is the number of players we’ve trained that are doing well at other teams.

We’re producing lots of SPL class players, but we need just a little bit more.

  9. Daily Record story eh?

Are they usually right? No they aren’t.

If there’s a photo-finish in the race, unless both crossing the line neck and neck are disqualified then there’s no chance.

Best not to have wagered before they suspended betting, then.

Long overdue “Good news” on its way on other matters. It frankly looks unstoppable now. Pity I couldn’t have got a fiver on Karma.

And it’s not the betting that is in danger of being suspended.

I think Roy Keane would get a certain amount of respect from the players and there would be a wee bit of fear of him which in my opinion would be no bad thing.A a player he was very very successful and in management he has yet to really cut it .He must have learned a fair amount as Alex Fergusons captain and should know a player when he sees one.He would not be my first pick but we could do worse and im sure the journalists would be wary of him. The only thing that would annoy me about Keane was how he treated Celtic the last time round.

We signed him while he was recovering from a serious injury. We got him back up to speed but as soon as he did, he decided it wasn’t for him and promptly retired.

We got a few good performances out of him but in balance the whole thing was probably a waste of time

  20. What size of a bet would it take to close the book on a manager being installed ?

Would it take 1 sizable bet or a number of hundred of smaller bets?

Celtic need a manager. Celtic don’t do their business in the public eye. So how would the bookies know?

Would Peter gladly place a bet sizeable enough close to SB renewal time in order to bring in the customers. A small investment for long term personal bonus collecting.

  21. Contact has been made with Bert who compiled the UEFA Ranking of 3.460 – 3.960 for the cup winners of scotland instead of using the old Rangers co-efficient of 4.960.

“I see from your Europa League Seedings section that the remaining qualification for Scotland for the Cup winners you have a provisional ranking between 3.460 – 3.960.

3.960 is the coefficient points ranking for Hibernian

3.460 is the country coefficient for Scotland.

My understanding is that the country co-efficient only is used if the team qualifying has not played in Europe in the previous five seasons. In this case the other finalist in the cup Rangers did play in Europe in season 2011/12 and have a co-efficient point ranking of 4.960.

Therefore some may have been expecting your website to show the last Scottish qualifier for EL to be between the following ranking range :- 3.960 – 4.960

Has Rangers co-efficient points not been counted as the club went into liquidation and now have a different company registration number after being formed as a Newco in 2012? Is this why you have treated them like a club that have not been in Europe in last five season and used the Country Co-efficient as opposed to the Team Ranking of Ranges of 4.960.

I would appreciate if you would clarify the reasons for thr above.”

No Keane’s biggest fan but there’s not a player in that dressing room who won’t know him or what he has done so he will command total respect.

I doubt very much he will allow any other voice or put up with dissent from anyone in the dressing room, I think he will attract players.

Dissenting supporters could be dissuaded by asking them to tell it to his face :)

Betting not suspended with PP, he is second favourite. Feel free to pile in, however bear in mind how many favourites there are for every job before someone is appointed :-)
