God love (and save us from ) Packie Bonner

God love Packie Bonner, spend “£20m to £30m to bring those quality players the fans are desperate for”.

There are two opposing world views: one where people call for unaffordable money [those figures would be]to be spent because fans of a football club are “desperate”, the other where people want football clubs to spend what they can afford.

The latter group remember football’s crash-and-liquidate days – and learned the lessons. The former also remember the crash-and-liquidate days, but they are impervious to lessons.

We can debate what the size of an affordable spend is, but a couple of parameters have to be observed:

If it increases the cost base to such an extent that a reversal on the field would plunge the club into financial disarray, it’s unaffordable.

Players need to be appropriate for the environment – with neighbouring clubs earning £100m each season from TV deals, only players of a certain profile will play for a club with a considerably smaller wage bill (and turnover).

We live in a time when Scots Steven Naismith went for £8.5m (1 goal in 9 starts) and Ross McCormack went for £11m. These are common values for this calibre of player. We all want Celtic to improve, but that will not be achieved by spending unsuitable or unaffordable money. Packie, think back to Valentine’s Day 2012 and add a dose of perspective.

Get better at scouting, get fitter, improve the coaching – and spend everything you can afford, not any more.  That’s the model for Celtic.

To compare managers on that basis is a bit reductive by not adding any context.

In Roy’s first season with Sunderland he managed to get a 65% win ratio. That obviously dropped in the Premier League.

Keane does appear to be some sort of tough nut. Superb player.

But does being a hard man equate to commanding respect. I believe it takes more that this to motivate and win over players.

Ranieri being the example de jour.

That’s exactly what I call it, and I never said it was not your decision, I just hope you are very disappointed that’s all.

Of all the managers who have been mentioned, Roy Keane would be nearer the bottom of my list than the top.

It wouldn’t surprise me one bit though, if the new manager was not even among the extensive list of those quoted. Could be someone unexpected (but not an unknown like RD).

  6. but then usa was too busy supplying nuclear weapons to them, to be bothered about a few hundred of their own men.

The essential point, the one you are steadfastly choosing to ignore, is that the state of Israel was imposed on people against their will.

You are being obtuse here Ernie.Of course it was against the will of the Palestinian people.Would you have expected anything else?.On the other hand, where was the new state of Israel supposed to be set up?.

  11. coolmore mafia on

Just to add my tarnished 2p to the historical debate, didn’t the Palestinian leader side with Nazis during WW2, living in Berlin, and reject the UN proposed Palestinian state because there was Jewish one next door? Didn’t these guys want to wipe jews off the map, (along with their Nazi mates)? Didn’t these guys try to wipe Israel off the face of the earth in 1967 but lost?

The Jews, known as The Israelites since King David, have worshiped for almost 3000 years in Jerusalem, except when banned by Christians and Muslims. This predates Christianity, and Islam. The Jews’ first battles were with pagans of the Greek and Roman empires.

Sorry to invoke godin’s law. Truth is this conflict is 3000 years old and makes Northern Ireland look like a Yoko Ono love in. I was in the PLO camp, but now am an Israeli sympathiser. Obviously the killing, kidnapping, bulldozing etc disgusts me, but it has to be seen in the context of ancient and modern history, not since 1968.

“Oh and I’m still waiting for that single example of a native population volunteering to be ethnically cleansed from their homes and land, can’t you find one ? Now there’s a surprise”

Just look at the full history of Jerusalem I am sure this should answer your question. There have been many invaders throughout history who have brutally conquered, butchered & expelled the populations of Jerusalem.

While Jews were amongst the first people’s to settle & to build a religious temple on the land they have been targeted through the ages, as have many other denominations. Jerusalem was & I suppose for some is still seen as being at the centre of the Earth & has been fought over many times throughout history. However while Jerusalem fell many times through brutal aggression not once were the Jews responsible for any of this brutality. No the opposite is true, Jews while being amongst the first to have claim to the land have been expelled and to use your description “ethnically cleansed” from it all throughout history. However when the Jewish people have been in control of the holy city it has always been open to all as it is today. Spot the difference?

The point I make is your revisionism of history is imbalanced & frankly disgusting. Jews have lived on the land from the beginning. Their entitlement to the land is not in dispute & just as they have done so throughout history they recognise other faiths also have claims. Can you say the same for others?

In modern times – It is not Israel who calls for the destruction of a people. It is not Israel who restricts woman’s ability to drive and to live as equals. It is not Israel who teaches it’s babies to hate another people based on their faith & to kill the infidel. It is not Israel who oppresses sexuality or religion & it is not Israel who threatens it’s neighbours on a daily basis.

It’s easy to pick & choose your history to suit your own agenda but you do yourself & any opportunity for peace no good whatsoever. You see there is democratic country at this moment called Israel & it is based in the Middle East (the only one) & whether you like it or not it has a right to defend its existence. Again whether you like it or not it is there to stay. Yes you have a right criticise as anyone does of any country but what you don’t have is right to rewrite history to suit yourself.

Your demagoguery is dangerous and it helps no one, least of all the terrible plight of the Palestinian people.

All decent thinking people should be behind a two state solution where both peoples can live in freedom & security. It’s a shame I see none of this being called for here on CQN. Only poison!

Correct. Keane has a lot to

    Prove – I’d support him

If appointed for the reasons outlined earlier but he’s not a football appointment.

McInnes or Neilson have better football management credentials but won’t sell tickets.

    My money is on Lennon.

  15. The Battered Bunnet on

The “Hairdryer” is a somewhat disreputable management approach these days. Players are better informed, better protected and better advised than in the past. It simply doesn’t work on top players – there’s always another club willing to pay the going rate, why put up with that behaviour?

I dare saw even the top boys use anger as a management tool periodically, Mourinho and Van Gaal look like they each have a fuse that can be shortened to suit, but the Drill Sergeant personality is largely a thing of the past.

Looking at Keane in isolation, I was underwhelmed by the prospect 2 years ago. His personality was bigger than his management credentials. It seemed motivated more by box office than dug out.

Having spent the subsequent 2 years as understudy to MON, I think shows some hitherto unseen humility. Fair enough.

    Moyes is the man though.

The appointment of the next Manager will be a marriage of convenience.

No David Moyes or Brendan Rodgers is coming up to take a 75% cut on their last pay deal so let’s not give this SB sales motivated claptrap any oxygen.

Keane would not be highly sought after nor would Lennon in terms of EPL or many Championship clubs.

Both are young enough to bounce back so they are a better fit.. However reservations remain over both. I’d take Lennon any day over Keane for football nous. I’d take Keane over Lenny for balls in standing up to Lawwell. I can tell you this – in the event Keane took the job he’d not be bullied by PL and if he left because PLwas trying his carry on buying players etc. Keane would not be bought off as Lennon was. I think we’d be told why he left.
