God love (and save us from ) Packie Bonner

God love Packie Bonner, spend “£20m to £30m to bring those quality players the fans are desperate for”.

There are two opposing world views: one where people call for unaffordable money [those figures would be]to be spent because fans of a football club are “desperate”, the other where people want football clubs to spend what they can afford.

The latter group remember football’s crash-and-liquidate days – and learned the lessons. The former also remember the crash-and-liquidate days, but they are impervious to lessons.

We can debate what the size of an affordable spend is, but a couple of parameters have to be observed:

If it increases the cost base to such an extent that a reversal on the field would plunge the club into financial disarray, it’s unaffordable.

Players need to be appropriate for the environment – with neighbouring clubs earning £100m each season from TV deals, only players of a certain profile will play for a club with a considerably smaller wage bill (and turnover).

We live in a time when Scots Steven Naismith went for £8.5m (1 goal in 9 starts) and Ross McCormack went for £11m. These are common values for this calibre of player. We all want Celtic to improve, but that will not be achieved by spending unsuitable or unaffordable money. Packie, think back to Valentine’s Day 2012 and add a dose of perspective.

Get better at scouting, get fitter, improve the coaching – and spend everything you can afford, not any more.  That’s the model for Celtic.

STV understood that the SFA applied their own criteria for playing in the domestic game. This report was from April 2012 and refers to their application post going into admin and pre liquidation.

The SFA will have applied their criteria in March 2011 and in 2012. The question is what happened in June 2011? Did they have a recheck of their own criteria and pass Rangers?

Can I just clarify, Celtic have not taken Res 12 to UEFA — they will be involved in that process but they have not done anything of the sort ……. yet!

I am disappointed to see that Peter Lawwell gave an exclusive interview to the SUN. If it was a snub to the Record then he could just as easily have gone to The Herald, The Evening Times or another paper.

The Sun is a toxic brand in my opinion especially when it comes to football and football fans. I perosnally have no time for it and to be honest I boycott all Murdoch related media as much as I can. Anyone associated with Murdoch media or who seeks their endorsement is automatically selling their soul to the devil in my eyes.

    So, very disappointed in that.

Now, Peter Lawwell is the CEO of Celtic Football Club. He is also a man, a father, a husband, an uncle, a friend to many and an acquaintance of some. He is unknown to most of us.

He has corporate job to do and is very well paid for it. Personally, I don’t necessarily agree with certain elements of his stewardship and I don’t agree with certain management policies which have been adopted by the club in the recent past. But that is dead easy for me to say because I can only give my point of view and perspective standing on the outside looking in.

As a matter of principle and good governance practice I think that too many people have been in charge of Celtic for too long, In that regard I believe that fresh thinking is required at board level and that Peter should move on for his sake and for the sake of the club. He would still be a Celtic fan in another job. But that is only my view.

However, I do believe that Peter Lawwell is a Celtic fan and is a man, like any other, who should not have to put up with personal abuse. I think he is badly advised at times — the Sun interview being an example.

Had he said anything about Res 12 I would have been disappointed because it has already been agreed when something will be said.

Re Res 12 — I read with interest the rejoinder from some guys on the Rangers media.

Apart from making reference to Auldheid as some kind of Gers hater ( I wonder if they know anything about his family and the different teams they support? ) their argument in response to the Off Shore Game report is reasoned, well thought through and backed up with both fact and an interpretation of the rules.

I like that. That is a reasonable and concise argument where you can cut to the chase and get away from misdirection and scattergun argument.

I believe the rejoinder to be wrong in a couple of material facts and circumstances though.

For example, as Auldheid pointed out last night the licence was properly granted as at 31st March by the SFA – the Res 12 team have never said anythng different.

What the TOG report highlighted was that it may well have been the case that as that date the SFA were told that there was a potential liability as opposed to being told there was a real liability which has not crystalised yet and which was not overdue.

That difference between real liability and a potential one is crucial.

In actual fact a real liability, including a sum and a settlement mechanism was discussed between HMRC and Mike McGill acting on behalf of Rangers on 10th February 2011 and a formal offer to agree payment was put in writing by HMRC on 23rd February. So by 31st March there was no potential liability the bill was very real indeed.

Another discussion was had between HMRC and Donald McIntyre of Rangers on 4th May and at this meeting the tax bill was actually agreed both in terms of amount and when it should be paid. To be blunt, Craig Whyte would be paying it on takeover. This was then set out in writing by HMRC on 5th May.

By 16th May no payment had been received and HMRC wrote again saying they were going to enforce which they did by letter on 20th May. This letter is acknowledged by MCR on behalf of Rangers on 6th June and all they do in that letter is set out where the club is, what finances they have, what debts they have, their available cashflow and so on.

They don’t accept any of the previous agreements reached with HMRC nor do they actually offer to pay the bill. Yet the Rangers guys argue that this is sufficient proof that “they were awaiting a schedule of payments from HMRC” which somehow justifies the argument that they had an agreement with HMRC on how the bill should be treated and how it would be paid.

What is not mentioned in the rejoinder is that Rangers were so desperately playing for time that on 23rd August they wrote to HMRC saying that they had never seen any formal demand of 20th May and that no one in the building (Ibrox) knew anything about it.

Interesting since a detailed reply had been sent on June 6th which specifically refers to the letter of 20th May and acknowledges all that it sets out and says.

As the Rangers guys say, it is not fatal to have an outstanding bill as at 30th June, but as Barcabhoy points out all the SFA had to do with that is point out that the bill had been declared and that UEFA had granted an exemption in terms of annex vii of the rules because there was written evidence which showed that HMRC and Rangers had reached an agreement on payment. That would have been the end of that.

Except that they didn’t and there wasn’t. By September Craig Whyte was still saying they were in discussions with HMRC — well his idea of discussions and HMRC’s are entirely different – and in any event discussions don’t amount to a written agreement.

The CFCB rules say that they are meant to bring transparency and clarity to the licensing process and procedures. I agree, the rules appear clear and in that same year dozens of cubs were kicked out of Europe or were sanctioned because they could not comply with the rules.

Res 12 only seeks a clear and transparent explanation as to what actually happened in this case because that is wholly unclear and there is a deep suspicion that not everything was properly declared.

Bear in mind that so far, Rangers have been convicted of not declaring side letters to HMRC, failing to provide full contracts of employment to the SFA for registration purposes and one of their directors at the material time failed to disclose that he had been banned from being a director. So it could be argued that there is a culture of failing to disclose.

Anyway, the argument is a good un, and we ait to see what UEFA make of it.

  20. This post is based on pure conjecture and is purely fictional.

    It has no factual basis.

The characters involved are made up and the story is one of pure fantasy.

Once upon a time there was an Irish Don.

    His name was Don Desmondo.

He was a very wealthy Don .

He socialised and was befriended by other mega rich wealthy Irish Dons.

They liked the sport of kings, the gowf ,and the fitba.

These sports were their way of showing off their wealth ,and could be utilised as a form of recreational therapy.

They all liked a wee punt .

They would sometimes be referred to as The Coolmore mafia.

Now the other Dons invested in English fitba clubs.

Some in the biggest club in the world in Manchester.

They could brag of being associated with the biggest club ,playing in the biggest league in the world.

You see a Don needs to fill his ego.

Now Don Desmondo ,he needed to fill his ego.

So he invested in and controlled a sleeping Giant in Celtica.

A club of great Irish association ,known throughout the world.

When he first invested he loved his new toy.

He pumped lots of money into it.

It played well and the great name of Celtica was reinvigorated in Europa.

You see .Don Desmondo had a cunning plan.

He would get his friends of political and business influence to help Celtica get into The English premier league.

All his money spent would be returned to a handsome profit when this happened.

But sadly this plan failed .

He had to punt more money into Celtica ,and his appetite for his toy regressed.

He had a puppy that needed fed and looked after ,but he no longer had the appetite to do this personally.

So he passed the daily chores on to his trusted consigliere Pietro.

    Peitro was his fall guy.

Peitro would do all that he commanded.

Peitro personally suffered ,but was always loyal to Don Desmondo.

Peitro was told .Run Celtic as Macawber would.

Now there was a rival gang who had a Toy in the land of Celtica .

    This Toy was the Rangurs.

Whilst the Rangurs competed with the Celtica all was good.

There was interest in their battles.

But there was a problem .The Rangurs toy was broken.

    It was damaged beyond repair.

So a new toy was made .The Sevco.

But Don Desmondo made it clear to Pietro.

If the Sevco die ,eventually the Celtica will die.

You must ensure that the Sevco survive.

Pietro was under pressure ,he had to find a way for the Sevco to survive and not be seen to be complicit in its survival.

He was vilified and hated by many Celtica supporters.

But he believed that Don Desmondo was right .

If Sevco disappear ,in the fullness of time Celtica would wither to.

A weakened Sevco meant that it was viewed by many that there was no real competition for Celtica .

    Interest in Celtica dropped.

The coffers fell empty and Don Desmondo was mad.

He ordered Pietro to come up with a new plan.

Pietro called together all his Capos and a new plan was formed .

Celtica is known throughout the world ,we will sell her in Europa ,in Asia , In Australia and in the Americas.

Don Desmondo watched the movie The Godfather.

    He watched wanted out .

He followed the plan of Michael .

Like Tom Hagan Pietro was not a war time consigliere.

So a new one would be found.

Like Don Corleone he would pass on his power to a trusted relative.

  26. It is a small irony that, following my complaint to The Telegraph about last week’s allegations about Hillsborough insensitivity, I got a first stage fobbing off reply (don’t worry, I am still pursuing it). Peter’s cosy chat with The Sun undermines my motivation a little but I will try to rise above it because the issue is bigger than him.

The Telegraph reply was as follows:-

    “Dear Mr *******,

Celtic’s confirmation over standing areas ‘very insensitive’, saysHillsboroughcampaigner, 5 May 2016

Thank you for contacting us about this article.

The article does not ‘use a quote by the Celtic CEO, Mr Peter Lawwell’, as you say. There is no mention in it of Mr Lawwell, nor does it contain any suggestion that he announced anything – which was the erroneous information corrected by the Daily Record.

Our article correctly states that the introduction of the new rail seats was confirmed in Celtic’s season-ticket renewal information, and it was this that was put to Margaret Aspinall by the article’s writer. Further, the article states that Celtic was granted permission to install the standing areas in June last year. It is therefore unclear how it could be inaccurate or misleading.

I trust that this is of assistance.

  29. Nothing particularly wrong with the Lawwell interview apart from the Publication. Problem stems from having your hopes raised and then dashed again.

Reading Winning Captains last night it seemed to me he was saying tomorrow is the day, now I would have to scroll back & re read his stuff to see if I am wronging him but that is the distinct impression I had logging off last night.

Today he is saying nothing was ever scheduled for today, I have always been supportive of Winning Captains but all this teasing and cryptic clues have me really pissed off.

That way if the CEO wanted to communicate with the fans he could do it directly rather than having to rely on whatever element of the MSM that could be bothered to print an interview.

Who knows, maybe in time there could even be a website?
