God love (and save us from ) Packie Bonner

God love Packie Bonner, spend “£20m to £30m to bring those quality players the fans are desperate for”.

There are two opposing world views: one where people call for unaffordable money [those figures would be]to be spent because fans of a football club are “desperate”, the other where people want football clubs to spend what they can afford.

The latter group remember football’s crash-and-liquidate days – and learned the lessons. The former also remember the crash-and-liquidate days, but they are impervious to lessons.

We can debate what the size of an affordable spend is, but a couple of parameters have to be observed:

If it increases the cost base to such an extent that a reversal on the field would plunge the club into financial disarray, it’s unaffordable.

Players need to be appropriate for the environment – with neighbouring clubs earning £100m each season from TV deals, only players of a certain profile will play for a club with a considerably smaller wage bill (and turnover).

We live in a time when Scots Steven Naismith went for £8.5m (1 goal in 9 starts) and Ross McCormack went for £11m. These are common values for this calibre of player. We all want Celtic to improve, but that will not be achieved by spending unsuitable or unaffordable money. Packie, think back to Valentine’s Day 2012 and add a dose of perspective.

Get better at scouting, get fitter, improve the coaching – and spend everything you can afford, not any more.  That’s the model for Celtic.

No matter what newspaper PL gave an interview it wouldent have made any difference he is on to a doing anyway, he’ll never please every one, no one can.

And as you say your standing on the outside looking in, but many think they know it all, and what’s going on, but like you, them, and me they don’t, it’s a job he does well and should be well paid for it.

PL should move on? That I don’t get, but that’s your opinion, but I’m sure PL will take your opinion on board, have a think about it and stay, but that’s just my opinion.

Had he said something about res12 you would have been disappointed because it has already been agreed when something will be said? So yourself and Auldheid can go into detail on the matter (as you’ve done this AM) but PL and the board can say nothing? Or am I reading it wrong?

“More underwhelmed by the fact that PL is sticking to his guns and I find the outrage at what he is saying a bit sham.”

It’s not what he said that has caused “outrage” but more what he didn’t say.

We all understand the league we play in causes budget constraints. That much has been rammed down our throats over and over again. Going to The Sun or any newspaper to regurgitate the same old same old is utterly pointless. Especially when there is so much more he could & should have said. If this interview was designed to sell season tickets? Then I don’t often agree with radar Jackson but he’s right in what he says. This was indeed a massive own goal.

  4. When, oh when, oh when……will Celtic’s paying customers realize that,….the Celtic hierarchy have to be removed ??????

Not 1 Celtic supporter among them all.

Lawwell was ‘correctly’ described by the huns as – Liewwell – imho.

He is a B#STARD who has to be removed.

Desmond isny any better and, when was the last time he put money into the club ?

When was the last time he took any money out of the club ?

See all these accounts that are presented by the club – who believes them ?

    A rudderless-ship at all levels.

    Keiran Tierney

    Leigh Griffiths

    The Green Brigade

….are the only semblances of – Celticness to be found in the entire club.

But,…..having said all of that, I think that things will have to get worse….before the,

paying Celtic supporters realize that action needs taken.

As it stands just now, the huns will win the league next season.

Is that what it will take to wake the sleeping Celtic supporters from they’re slumber ?

Celtic FC have just won the league title for the 5th year in a row and yet, apart from a

handful of games…Celtic Park is half empty!

I’m not too sure that justice will be done re: all the Res : 12 stuff.

If there’s a trap-door to escape from the heat, Celtic’s hierarchy will already have found it.

    SFA

    R*ngers FC

    Scottish Footballing Establishment

    SMSM

…have all cheated Celtic FC for 128 years.

That the ‘snowmen’ who run Celtic didny know what was going on is P#SH!!!

    …imho.

The biggest cheats of the Celtic supporters are, the Celtic-PLC-Hierarchy.

Sort them, then go for the rest of them.

Celtic FC needs restructured into a, Celtic FC that fights back.

To get that, fans will need to financially starve out the, present kowtowing

hierarchy who will….if given the chance, throw you to the devil-dogs of the

    establishment.

So, it’s simple….give the hierarchy yer money – ye deserve to be cheated.

    Simple as that.

Btw….see this, 5 way agreement thingy…does it contain a bit where it is stipulated that,

if R*ngers look like being relegated – the leagues will be restructured ?

    ……zzzzzzzzzzzzzz…….

After the expectation levels on here last night, I went to bed, with hope in my heart, that I would wake up this morning and read about Celtic making a powerful statement in one of the written media’s outlets (I refuse to say it’s name) and blow the top of Scottish Football by taking Resolution 12 to UEFA.

Instead, I find that he has reiterated the same old stuff that we have been fed/told on several previous occasions. Peter Lawwell has seriously misjudged how this will go down with the fans, in my opinion. If, as it appears, he has given this interview to that vile rag alone, in the wake of the Hillsborough judgement then that is the first major error. I was prepared to overlook that if he had announced that the club was taking Resolution 12 to UEFA.

This interview will not appease disgruntled fans and persuade them to renew or to buy a Season Ticket. It is more likely to entrench the feelings of the dissenters. Again, I would advise ST holders to keep their cash in their pockets until we see the calibration of manager who will be appointed/foisted upon us.

    Seriously underwhelmed SadiesBhoy.

TD — my reason for saying that Peter should move on is because I honestly think that the company should have a new approach and because there are guielines and studies into the effectiveness of a CEO after a period of time.

Most CEO’s stay between no more than 5 and 7 years. Harvard Business School will recommend that it should certainly be no longer than 9.

Further there is considerable evidence to suggest that no matter how good a guy your CEO might be, the second half of their tenure will more than likely priduce poorer results than the first half because in that first half the whole company is challenged and inspired by the new person at the helm.

Many CEO’s move on after 5 years for the good of the company and themselves because once “established” their efficiency is to a certain extent weakened in the workplace and revealingly they lose touch with the customers because they are less inclined to dig into the core purpose of the business and they have an automatically entrenched view of how the business should be run with or without them.

That view may well be at odds with the customer and so company performance drops.

Does any of that sound familiar.

Here is a quote from a recent article on the subject.

“The reason why CEOs tend to have a five-year peak is revealing. The strength of the employee relationship continues to improve the longer the CEO stays around. But as the CEO becomes more established, he or she relies increasingly on their colleagues for insight and market intelligence and so the ties with customers weaken. The consequence is a drop-off in performance.”

So, when I say that Peter should move on, I genuinely believe that it is in the best interests of Celtic and himself that he should do so. He is obviously a Celtic fan and will always be so but the science of business suggests that he cannot be as effective for the club as he once was.

The same shpuld apply to our Directors and Non Execs.

With regard to the Res 12 statement — both Auldheid and I have come to clarify what was said in response to the TOG report.

I have made no mention of when anything is going to UEFA or how or who to or what we want done etc etc.

As you will know, this detail has been discussed with Celtic and will be the subject of an announcement shortly.

When others speculate that there will be some kind of announcement, as happened on twitter, they are not in possession of the facts and so it would have been disappointing if something had appeared in today’s Sun of all papers when whatever is to be announced is not yet ready to go.

My point was that had Peter departed from that line, which he hasn’t, I would have been disappointed in that.

Just read the Lawwell article on another Celtic website…

I’m giving him credit for one thing – he’s laid out his stall. He effectively admits he is incapable of speculation / managed Risk. That for me is the most concerning part of the interview.

The strategy is not a growth strategy. We know that the rest of the football world is growing. Ergo we are officially downsizing. Where will it stop.

The new Rangers are a growing club with ambition. It is inevitable they will over take us if we stick with downsizing and they pursue a growth strategy. Depressing.

I’ve never met a single Celtic fan whose love for the club was based on who was in the boardroom at any given time.

That said we have another PR disaster on our hands and if the interview was with the media as a whole and not exclusively with the Sun, the club could limit the damage by confirming this asap.

PS. Did anyone honestly expect a statement on an issue as important as Res 12 to be made during an interview with a tabloid newspaper?

Many sources have told us there will be a joint statement from Celtic and the Resolutioners imminently – but we have been hearing that now for two weeks. What is the hold up?

Why the Sun ? Probably because its got the biggest circulation in Scotland and that his measage will get to the biggest audience possible. Many Celtic fans read the Sun : fact.

More Celtic fans will read the Sun compared to the combined totals of the Hearald, Glasgow Evening Times, The Guardian, The Scotsman and the Times.

I also wonder how many Celtic fans on here recently endorsed the Suns electoral opinion and voted for Nicola. I do admit, they make good bedfellows.

  32. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

For what it’s worth, I don’t think we need to spend a fortune on new players. We have plenty of good ones already. We need to bring in a reliable centre back, a quality midfield enforcer and a decent striker to play alongside Griffiths or to replace Griffiths in the event of injury.

I liked the suggestion by a couple of posters last night that a transfer budget could be used to buy out the contracts of some of the players we already have to bring our squad down to a reasonable and manageable size where players won’t become disgruntled and troublesome because they are not getting game time.

  33. I think the fact we have 5 or 6 no. 10s (Commons, Rogic, Armstrong, Christie, Allen and arguably Macgregor) and no defensive midfield player, shows our signing strategy is all over the place.

Only really Griffiths upfront and we sign Carlton Cole….

We have greater resources that Malmo, Maribor, Molde & Sevco…just badly deployed.

We don’t need £30m to fix it. Let our manager manage and sign players that improve the team.
