God love (and save us from ) Packie Bonner

God love Packie Bonner, spend “£20m to £30m to bring those quality players the fans are desperate for”.

There are two opposing world views: one where people call for unaffordable money [those figures would be]to be spent because fans of a football club are “desperate”, the other where people want football clubs to spend what they can afford.

The latter group remember football’s crash-and-liquidate days – and learned the lessons. The former also remember the crash-and-liquidate days, but they are impervious to lessons.

We can debate what the size of an affordable spend is, but a couple of parameters have to be observed:

If it increases the cost base to such an extent that a reversal on the field would plunge the club into financial disarray, it’s unaffordable.

Players need to be appropriate for the environment – with neighbouring clubs earning £100m each season from TV deals, only players of a certain profile will play for a club with a considerably smaller wage bill (and turnover).

We live in a time when Scots Steven Naismith went for £8.5m (1 goal in 9 starts) and Ross McCormack went for £11m. These are common values for this calibre of player. We all want Celtic to improve, but that will not be achieved by spending unsuitable or unaffordable money. Packie, think back to Valentine’s Day 2012 and add a dose of perspective.

Get better at scouting, get fitter, improve the coaching – and spend everything you can afford, not any more.  That’s the model for Celtic.

That’s my point though if he get’s to the stage that PL has, or is clearly getting to, he’s no longer good for the business.

Thats a judgement call that the board has to make, would they be able to get in someone new who would be as good as or better for the business, in the present conditions would they be faced with the same problems with the new man or woman sooner rather than later, is there a real possibility that the dissatisfaction can be turned around and the lost revenues regained?

I don’t know, as I said a new voice, even with the same message could make some difference.

To be totally successful they’d need may need to make some other changes too. Give manager more control over signings etc – even under same budget constraints. Doing that would allow PL to leave without him having to back down and admit his plan was ‘wrong’.

Wow. Some scary views being expressed on here about our lack of qualification to judge the performance of the CEO/PLC. Leaving aside the fact that some of us run operations significantly larger in scale, turnover and public accountability than PL, just substitute some of the logic to read….

“We aren’t qualified to judge how well David Cameron/ (heaven forfend) Donald Trump are doing their jobs. How can we possibly comprehend the complexity of leading a major European nation/ being the leader of the free world? What do we know about the complexities of macro-economic management, foreign policy, European integration, the military, the justice system, housing policy, the health and care system…. etc, etc? We aren’t remotely qualified to judge these guys at all. They cannot reasonably be held to account by our meek and unqualified selves…”

Great news if Res12 has finally made it to EUFA.

But not sure that EUFA is itself corruption free and may have a Sandy Bryson in its midst.

Wonder if BBC et al will mention it or spend time discussing whether the rainfall in Dingwall is different to that in Stranraer or other such matters of the moment. HH

Any moaners as I’v said please don’t include all Celtic supporters, well me anyway, I’m a positive guy on the club, it’s my opinion, and only mine, and I never come away with the “all Celtic supporters” thingie, every individual is allowed his/her opinion, but should never give the “all Celtic supporters” BS it’s not on and false.

  11. A wee note of caution….

When will some folk learn that, anything that the Celtic hierarchy are involved in

is likely to – fluk-up – at the vital moment.

I smell another smoke-screen being spun on the back of Res : 12 which is, thee

    burning issue in Timdom.

Wait till ye see Celtic’s attempts at seeking justice, hitting a brick wall just after

    season book renewal deadline day.

I’ve said all along, even though I’m scooby-do! when it comes to Res : 12…..that,

the best way to get this stuff over the line would be to, park the ‘entire’ Res : 12

bus outside the main entrance at Celtic Park with a note pinned on the windscreen

saying – “For the hierarchy of Celtic FC, you’ll find included here, the entire contents

of all the, corruption, cheating etc re: R*ngers FC / SFA etc…get it done and,…we’ll

    renew our season books!”

    So, so simple.

    What’s the hold-up ?

You don’t ‘ever’ trust the Celtic hierarchy – you sack them!

Keep the high balls low – CSC

The Rogic thing is a bit awkward. He entered the second last of his contract having hardly kicked a ball for us.

Once he proved himself he had about 18 months left and had his head turned.

If you ask me, we let him run it down and keep him. Why sell for cut price? You never know he might renew next season if we show sign of progress.

What else did anyone else expect, “get your snake oil”. Same ole same ole, but a sly attack on the Celtic Support (par for the course)

I do always admire TD’s optimism but to compare PL to Paul McStay is beyond the pale.

Nothing PL says or that is found in written print surprises me, although i would dearly love for someone to replace him, there is too much distrust amongst a fair few of the support.

I think it has actually gone beyond distrust now. There is anger, disconnect and even hatred for what some see as his role in the shambles we have become.

First to admit I’m no fan of his-haven’t been since he cost us c£10m over Bobo-but even I am surprised at the vitriol.

The fact that it seems so widespread-and let’s face it,those empty seats are making plenty of noise-suggests his position is untenable.

PL is more or less telling you what you see is what you get, and PL is what’s on the tin, club in the black, five league championships in a row, season ticket prices frozen, safe standing area for the fans, 11 championships in the 21st century, a glorious new spectacular facade at Celtic Park, and as he sais, he goes, all you’ll get is another PL, careful what you wish for and what the level5 group post in CQN.
