Green and the interests of Scottish football

789

I’ve read yesterday’s statement from prospective Rangers owner, Charles Green, a few times now, without really understanding what the point was.  When someone issues an unexpected statement the reason is usually obvious.  Not on this occasion.

Published on the official Rangers web site it once and for all confirmed that Duff and Phelps were acting with the approval of Green when they took the SFA to the Court of Session, thereby bringing the entire Scottish game into a potential disrepute situation with Fifa.

Mr Green will now be fully aware of the ramifications of Rangers court action.  They failed in their attempt to have the matter referred back for consideration to the Judicial Panel and, as Paul McConville pointed out yesterday, cannot be ejected from the Scottish Cup.  They are not currently participating in the Scottish Cup, and suspension from a future season’s Cup is not an available punishment.

His legal advice is now likely to conclude that his actions will soon lead to suspension from the Scottish FA.  There is, however, an interesting theme through Green’s short statement that might indicate why his statement was issued:

“I nor my investors wish to see an outcome that would be to the detriment of Scottish Football”.

“….suspension or termination of Rangers Football Club membership of the SFA. That in our view would be a disaster for Scottish football”.

“Expulsion from the Scottish Cup is itself a very serious punishment which would also have a severe impact on Scottish football”.

We are heartened to hear the interests of Scottish football are so core to Mr Green’s heart.  This being the case, he will possibly protect Scottish football by asking the SFA to impose the now-illegal player registration ban on Rangers and beg them not to refer the matter back to the Appellate Panel. The horse has bolted on this one but it’s possibly worth a punt.

  1. Took my son and the dug out for a wee hike to Carbeth from Milngavie and back again today. Lovely walk and met French, Italians and Germans all doing the first leg of the West Highland Way. One problem though was the signage which was vandalised in places and the way-markers for the WHW were too few and far between and were the same ones that were in place when I did the full trip to Fort William in 1984!

What is it with tourism in this country? We want the foreign coin but treat them with disdain and poor service when they come here. I was a bit embarrassed by the general state of things when one couple asked if the WHW was still open!

  8. Art of war – I am regularly disgusted by what passes for tourist hospitality in Scotland. I do loads of walking and it really is awful. In Skye this weekend and the bloke who serves at the Tiagh Alain pub in Portnalong was just pathetic. Its a shame but there really is a disgusting bad attitude across many of the hostilaries etc.

  9. Iniquitus – I’m just struggling to be negative and unhappy at the moment (cant think why!!!!!)

It is the correct game though. I came down with chickenpox that night and put it down to the crowd. Later found out that there is a incubation time for the disease which took me back to St Pats night (Another story).

Great game from memory, but they went on to win the league, the bassas.

    I agree with your post!

Frankly, I think they are beyond saving – club 1872 Ltd are finished. The last 7 days have all but scuppered any financial rescue deal – the obvious course now is liquidation and new club if feasible.

CVA looks impossible for obvious reasons; SFA ruling (FIFA intervention) – potentially greater sanctions? Creditor settlement – Hector and/or Ticketus + who knows (there will be a few others seriously peeved – Hearts etc). Asset value/ preferred creditor(s) – floating charge and likely litigation to ascertain who holds it – 75% agreement is virtually impossible.

How can Green finance a CVA period? There are no benchmarks for his cashflow projections – how can he define what cash injection is needed for the next 1-3 years? The SFA ruling: will they be playing, where will they be playing, will they have players – no Europe, maybe no TV/ sponsor money, season-ticket sales, etc, etc?

Bottom line – liquidation now looks inevitable and that opens another host of imponderables:

Means new club (will be handicapped by many of the above CVA problems):

The determination of asset values (and ownership) is bound to involve protracted litigation; Hector, Ticketus, Craigy-boy, Collier Bristow, Liberty Capitol, Uncle Tom Cobbley and all…..

Get through the above and there is the small matter of SFA registration (SPL acceptance – which seems highly unlikely) and the new financial constraints that will be applied.

Throw-in; achieving acceptable credit rating – Hector (VAT/ NIC/ PAYEE), transfer dealing, venue (and rental) etc, etc.

That’s the VORTEX they are currently in – the EYE OF THE STORM will be Hector and the EBT’s and all the that follows their verdict:

What Hector chooses to do to extract retribution – cause he ain’t going to get any money and will want a body/ bodies!

Potential criminal investigations? Exposure of complicity (financial/ sporting)?

Corruption within the rules of the game? Potential stripping of titles/ trophies?

And…… I am sure a few other things that escape me just now!

Me – I think there is every likelihood that they (or whatever format their metamorphosis) – they will not kick a ball this coming season. They will be embroiled in litigation for the foreseeable future.

Apart from the knuckle-draggers who are certain to be upset about the trifling loss of history – 2012 Amen – they will spend 12 months raking over the ashes. Other than that – I can’t see anything else that might trouble them!

Hopefully, my views prove to be a mere snapshot of events to come!

  15. NegAnon2 – might be heading to Skye next weekend but just Portree. There are some exceptions in Skye though. I was wanting to do a bit of fishing and asked a barman if there was anywhere in town I could hire a rod. He said hold on and disappeared. 10 minutes later he came back with a rod and reel and said bring it back when you leave. He didn’t know me from Adam. Good guy. Portnalong guy sounds like a plank tho!

Best book I’ve read is Paul McGrath’s biography, Back from the Brink, truly amazing story of an amazing individual

Felt this book should have included a couple of razor blades so you could have commited hari-kari half way through! Never read a more depressing story of a self centred genius whose only ambition in life was to somehow destroy the god given talent he was born with!

Paid £2 for it in a charity shop and felt I was robbed!

Yes that game was a real highlight for us as they went on to win the title, it was the first win for them in several years and marked the beginning of the Souness/Murray period which has now brought them to the edge of extinction.

  20. IMHO the last week’s events have put paid to RFC’s hopes of playing football in this coming season. I cannot see how they can evade the various legal and now administrative issues they face and remain intact.

Their greatest asset – the complicity of Doncaster and pals – they have managed to squander with their scorched earth policy. FIFA and HMRC are now in competition to see who will be the one who deals the fatal blow.

My feeling is that Green will walk, and that RFC will be liquidated. Brian Kennedy will pick up the assets for a song and will establish a club to play in Scotland in season 13-14 (probably in Division 3, although I wouldn’t rule out a move to 2 leagues of 16 or something, just to make their passage back to the top division easier.

The SPL may well be disbanded and I would expect Doncaster and Regan to walk.

Two weeks ago, I would still have put money on them surviving, in some form. But I really believe the decision to go to the CoS has doomed them. This week will be the end, I suspect.

  27. ItaliaBhoy – agree with most of your post bar – “The SPL may well be disbanded and I would expect Doncaster and Regan to walk.”

Donkey aye. Regan will do his `proper’ masters bidding (FIFA) and stay in his post IMO, unless he starts getting death threats etc….. at which point he will probably walk, but under his own steam. SPL will survive in some form.

Agree re: League Reconstruction – it was put on the back-burner just prior to the RFCiA announcement. The Gang of 10 openly discussed a 14 team league following the McLeish Report.

3 x leagues of 14 would cut their time in the wilderness by a year!

The Republic never voted to bring back the monarchy; Spain in hte 70s voted to approve a Constitution whereby the Monarchy was reinstated with democratic government. The two were allied.

Franco appointed Juan Carlos as his successor. A non-monarchical republic was not offered as an option that Franco would allow.

The Spanish Royal Family are a wee bit easier on their public purse, I believe.
