Green and the interests of Scottish football

789

I’ve read yesterday’s statement from prospective Rangers owner, Charles Green, a few times now, without really understanding what the point was.  When someone issues an unexpected statement the reason is usually obvious.  Not on this occasion.

Published on the official Rangers web site it once and for all confirmed that Duff and Phelps were acting with the approval of Green when they took the SFA to the Court of Session, thereby bringing the entire Scottish game into a potential disrepute situation with Fifa.

Mr Green will now be fully aware of the ramifications of Rangers court action.  They failed in their attempt to have the matter referred back for consideration to the Judicial Panel and, as Paul McConville pointed out yesterday, cannot be ejected from the Scottish Cup.  They are not currently participating in the Scottish Cup, and suspension from a future season’s Cup is not an available punishment.

His legal advice is now likely to conclude that his actions will soon lead to suspension from the Scottish FA.  There is, however, an interesting theme through Green’s short statement that might indicate why his statement was issued:

“I nor my investors wish to see an outcome that would be to the detriment of Scottish Football”.

“….suspension or termination of Rangers Football Club membership of the SFA. That in our view would be a disaster for Scottish football”.

“Expulsion from the Scottish Cup is itself a very serious punishment which would also have a severe impact on Scottish football”.

We are heartened to hear the interests of Scottish football are so core to Mr Green’s heart.  This being the case, he will possibly protect Scottish football by asking the SFA to impose the now-illegal player registration ban on Rangers and beg them not to refer the matter back to the Appellate Panel. The horse has bolted on this one but it’s possibly worth a punt.

No the ‘foam crosses’ was a different game. The reaction of the wee huns support that day was magical, talk about angry :-)))))

I did the WHW last year. We camped behind the Bridge of Orchy Hotel but went in for a few beers after pitching the tent.

I nearly ended up rolling about with guy behind the bar, an absolute diddy of the highest order.

  3. HT (celticwiki) I remember both events, know they were around same era but wasn’t sure if they were same game. Was the one of them the game wee B McLaughlin scored 2 in the 1st half?

Bj mac : American pie game was on standing terracing when we stood at the end hearts have now, so no foam for seats.

  6. Hamiltontim = Bridge of Orchy is the worst. I remember I came down from Ben Dorian and Celtic were playing hibs. Went into the bar and the TV wasnt on. Asked the guy to put it on and he refused. When I asked why he just told me he wasnt putting it on and that was it. So we refused to pay for the pints he had just poured and left.

This isnt an unusual event with that hotel.

Could be wrong but I think the game where the new Jinky (sic) scored twice was the day of the ‘foam crosses’. I’m pretty sure that the American Pie game ended with us getting thumped in the second half despite being ahead at half time.

Prraecepta and NegAnon2 what about the Blue Knights coming up on the inside track. Purchase of Cowdenbeath, gets Donald Finlay’s blessing, buy Ibrox in open sale and start off in SFL 1. At a pinch take a lease on Hampden, They have established themselves with the RFFF and should be able to get a solid season ticket base. Even if they dont get Ibrox at the start they should be able to squeeze the opposition out and get back there eventually. Have they got, can they raise, the money needed to startup?

I’ll let you know as soon as I do mate. You’ll see them as I do.

  11. andycol – I don’t believe they have the cash. They have no more cash than say, Frank Meade at Albion Rovers, who is doing a good job but will never challenge SPL clubs. Whyte has the holding charge on the assets. I think their ST base is about to disappear quicker than Rangers owned Arsenal shares. IMO

  12. A few weeks ago one poster (apologies, cannot remember who) made the link between currant events in Govan, Scotland and the iDarien scheme.

I believe the parallel iss highly relevant. We are in a historical moment, and many talking heads are spinning with disbelief that the unthinkable is occurring. Other more ‘thinking’ heads are equally disorientated by the illogically elaborate vultures feasting on the carcass that the Black Horse left behind. It is a historical moment.

While the Darien Scheme wiped out Scotland’s wealth and popped the bubble of it’s ego, more enlightened, thoughtful and successful modern times were to follow for the country and it’s reputation…

    Hopefully history will repeat itself…

    Well not all of it….

I knew it was that end and over where that met with the hertz fans, however that wee bit was still terracing when they put the seats on top of the terracing for a season or two before the new stand was built.

    Great memories though !

The floating charge on ipox is key (forget Murray Park) – is MBB still the preferred creditor? Has he shifted it through a few layers to the BVI?

Ticketus are pursuing MBB for their £27M advance (assuming he used it as security) = litigation. Collier Bristow are getting sued by D&P for £25M relating to their handling of the takeover. Hector has yet to make a move.

Someone is eventually going to end up with that asset and its going to cost the thick end of £30M + legal fees and a lengthy time in the courts. Who ever gets their hands on it is going to be looking for £3-4M per year rent on a lease back.

I doubt the TBK can muster the lump-sum to buy – what in effect was Lloyds debt (used to buy it) and the balance that the MBB scammed.

New club will be paying rent where ever they wash up and it will be financially crippling. It will be worse for the their season ticket income if they have to pitch tent somewhere other than ipox.

I have been lucky as it happens. I got into BB in a big way, as you know, after I had finished The Shield and The Wire, getting into them just as The Sopranos was finishing up. The wait between Season 3 and Season 4 of Breaking Bad was easy because at the same time as THAT was going on, I was getting into a vast re-watching of the The Wire in an effort to see things I hadn’t seen first time around, and somewhere along the line I stumbled across The Chicago Code (which only had one damned season), Damages, 24 and then, out of nowhere, Heroes, which was every bit as bizarre, but enjoyable, as I’d heard.

The break between Season 4 and Season 5 has absolutely breezed past though, because in between that I’ve discovered Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, True Blood (season 5 of which is about to start … God damn, that is going to be good. Next Sunday night!) and then Homeland, which, if any of you haven’t seen that are in for a genuine, genuine treat.

I am setting up for Boardwalk Empire, which I saw bits of and thought looked electrifying, and Blue Bloods next.

I am a big film fan, and have been for years. I have over 2000 films at home and have recently read Peter Biskind’s two great books about the film business, “Easy Riders & Raging Bulls” and “Down & Dirty Pictures”, which deconstruct all the movies and directors I have come to love over the years.

But as Hollywood has slipped in a big way since the glorious age of film in the 1970’s and early 80’s, and the independents have gone all gory and gruesome and become very derivative, I am amazed to see that television is having a genuine Golden Age, much like it did in the 60’s, which, of course, was the inspiration for the great directors who clambered over the Hollywood walls in the decade which came later. TV, right now, is where it’s at. It’s the genre I personally want to write for now. The movies are so dumbed down that it’s a scandal.

Too many people think Big Brother, reality shows, all that crap, when they think of the garbage being put on television. TV has never been better.

Blue Bloods is good, and I’ve enjoyed it, but it’s very light compared to your others. Although I haven’t seen BB as yet, I do think you’re right about a golden age. Not sure what to put it down to – West Wing maybe set a standard in strength of writing and Sorkin’s Newsroom is on the way.

I make the error of lending them out sometimes and the forgetting where they’ve gone,or the person I’ve lent them to forgets to give them back! And there’s a lot go back and forth between me & my brother…
