Green and the interests of Scottish football

789

I’ve read yesterday’s statement from prospective Rangers owner, Charles Green, a few times now, without really understanding what the point was.  When someone issues an unexpected statement the reason is usually obvious.  Not on this occasion.

Published on the official Rangers web site it once and for all confirmed that Duff and Phelps were acting with the approval of Green when they took the SFA to the Court of Session, thereby bringing the entire Scottish game into a potential disrepute situation with Fifa.

Mr Green will now be fully aware of the ramifications of Rangers court action.  They failed in their attempt to have the matter referred back for consideration to the Judicial Panel and, as Paul McConville pointed out yesterday, cannot be ejected from the Scottish Cup.  They are not currently participating in the Scottish Cup, and suspension from a future season’s Cup is not an available punishment.

His legal advice is now likely to conclude that his actions will soon lead to suspension from the Scottish FA.  There is, however, an interesting theme through Green’s short statement that might indicate why his statement was issued:

“I nor my investors wish to see an outcome that would be to the detriment of Scottish Football”.

“….suspension or termination of Rangers Football Club membership of the SFA. That in our view would be a disaster for Scottish football”.

“Expulsion from the Scottish Cup is itself a very serious punishment which would also have a severe impact on Scottish football”.

We are heartened to hear the interests of Scottish football are so core to Mr Green’s heart.  This being the case, he will possibly protect Scottish football by asking the SFA to impose the now-illegal player registration ban on Rangers and beg them not to refer the matter back to the Appellate Panel. The horse has bolted on this one but it’s possibly worth a punt.

Sorry to hear news re Thommo, he leaves some great memories behind – if there was a Top 10 of Hunskelpers compiled he would be pretty near the top.

  2. “Mr” Green’s statement last night has received much less attention than it deserves.

IMHO, this is the football equivalent of a distress signal – he is absolutely rooked and is reduced to simply begging the SFA to do something – anything – to save RFC: “in the interests of Scottish football”, of course…

The very fact he is raising suspension or expulsion is a clear indication that he acknowledges both are definite possibilities, indeed, perhaps even the 2 only likely outcomes.

But the swiftness of the SFA’s response, slapping him down, indicates that the SFA is speaking with the barrel of a gun in its back. FIFA simply will not allow its monopoly over football organisation and disciplinary issues to be eroded. If this means the end of a club with a history of abuse of the rules of the game, so be it.

Green is now the presumptive owner of a business with 130 million pounds of debt, which is facing the very real possibility of not being able to trade meaningfully for at least 12 months. I doubt his “investors” will be impressed with that…

No wonder he sounds a little panicked.

  4. oh i if you come on here and say what you think about celtic and the players and coaching staff ,you are indeed classed as a hun ,i know i have been called a hun and other things on here ,as for alan thomson we will find out that he has had a few warnings about his lifstyle.

  5. Long shot favour but here goes…..

My nephew and his pal are going to Poland to support Ireland in the Euros. I’m saying “support” but they don’t have tickets for any of the games – their main reason for going is for the craic and all round experience with the football fan zones etc……. but even getting to 1 game would be a result….black market tickets prices are going through the roof.

They are only there for the Croatia & Spain games.

They also had major problems getting fixed up with accommodation at a reasonable price, and working out best travel options to get to Poznan from Cracow.

Our good friend and CQN legend Zbyszek sorted all the travel & accommodation problems and has been an absolute colossus over the past couple of weeks (thanks again Z, you’re a star).

Even he is struggling to get tickets for any of the games at a reasonable cost.

Any advice or contacts gratefully received. Running out door now but will be back on around 8pm to check out any responses.

    Thanks,

  7. Good to see Murray winning the second set against a partisan crowd.

Does anyone know if there is any football on the box tonight.

    No to Newclub

  10. Very very sad to see Thomo leave. He is, in my estimation, a Celtic legend. Along with Henke, Sutton, BBJ, Stan Petrov, Lambert and Lubo, Thomo will always be up there amongst the Celtic Legends of that golden era in our history.

You will never walk alone Thomo. All the best mate.

  16. Rangers still astound me at times: they say “yes we should be punished” but when anyone dares suggest a punishment they go mental! We Arra Peepil indeed. They need to be destroyed for the good of the game now, not saved.

Saw the Alan Thompson news this morning, very sad, I hope it was an amicable split. One of my favourite players growing up and a hunskelper to boot! All the best Alan wherever you go!

  17. The last item on the ITV news was the terrible plane crash in Nigeria and then the newscaster says…’and now back to our main story, Prince Philip has a bladder infection’. Oh dear.

Been very rudely interrupted to MAKE dinner. Some women just cannot get the priorities right. I was forced to feed her good self, not that she needs much forcing. No Maize Prison, this house – D.I.V.O.R.C.E.! Oops, hope no MSM scribblers are looking in.

To business, my friend. I did return to the previous article first and saw your reply. However, I am glad you added it here too as I was bothered that you might not return to the other one thus missing my response. I could not agree with you more re A.T. Great contribution as a player and though I have no idea what exactly he did as coach, he certainly seemed to have a positive influence on Lennie. I would also concur that practically all the posters on CQN are taking a very pragmatic view. On some of the other sites, though, Celtic fans have been sabre rattling against Lennie and the board all because of that phone call which the Celtic statement has now clearly explained. If A.T. has done nothing to warrant dismissal, I will be the first to shout, loud and long! I am just not going to be sucked in by the jibberish of those ‘reporters’ whose journalistic history has exposed their established agendas and shown them to be the least reliable sources of truthful reporting. Strange how they have major difficulties finding anything untoward about our competitors but can immediately provide an in depth diagnosis of the troubles at Celtic Park. Of course, if nothing else, they may have learned from their many years dodging bullets that diversionary tactics can prove very productive.

    Heads high and marching on!

Is it possible Alan Thompson’s removal is the first step in the Celtic downsizing exercise for life after Rangers removal from the SPL? Actually perhaps not the first step if you consider O’Dea, Juarez and Murphy all exiting already. ….

Breeny, Do you really have so little faith in Celtic that you are moved to make such a suggestion ?

Celtic is not the much maligned ‘Bored’.

    Celtic is YOU.

    Celtic is ME.

Celtic is every single person who was ever moved to become a part of CELTIC.

If you are so fearful of what the current custodians of the club will do which might harm Celtic, then you don’t really understand why this club passes so passionately & effectively from one generation to the next.

    WE control Celtic.

WE will dictate what Celtic do.

If the ‘Bored’ were to do anything other than push Celtic forward, then WE would be the people who would call them to account.

The guys on the ‘Bored’ are you & me.

They are where they are BECAUSE they are Celtic men.

Have a bit of FAITH in yourself & in the guys lucky enough to be temporarily making the decisions on OUR behalf.

    WE are all Celtic.
