Guidetti the exceptional talent

1003

We’ve had a few free kick experts in modern times.  Lubo was first.  He could hit them, and score with them, with either foot.  The man was a menace to opponents on many levels.  He also taught us that hitting the ball as hard as possible into an opponent’s body, standard fare for Celtic in the 80s and early 90s, was a poor return from a dead ball situation.

Lubo clearly influenced Shaun but it wasn’t until Naka arrived that Shaun really found his grove.  With right footed Maloney and left footed Nakamura lining up behind the ball keepers were forced to leave a vulnerable space at any centrally-located free kick.

I don’t remember any player scoring with three consecutive free kicks, an absolutely exceptional feat.  John Guidetti is proving to be an exceptional player.  From what I hear he’s also enjoying being a Celtic player, there’s been a meeting of minds on what is expected and what’s on offer.

This is a young player who has already learned a few lessons on football clubs and career management.  He has the makings of a Celtic legend.

Those of you who weren’t there last night, make sure you see the goals.  Four of them were exceptional.

Many thanks to everyone who has big on our auction for two debenture seats for the Inverness game on Saturday, courtesy of Celtic sponsor, Magners.  Funds raised go towards building our forth kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi, specifically for the 909 children who attend Chibwata Primary School in Dowa, which currently doesn’t have a kitchen.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, but………  things are improving.  93% of your money raised is getting to the projects on the ground, Mary’s Meals are now feeding hundreds of thousands of kids there each day, over 2000 of them in kitchens CQN readers have already built.

Kids who are fed at school there are able to attend instead of having to work for food – primary school attendance is up 30% after Mary’s Meals build a kitchen.  As a result they all get a basic education, some of them are set on a road to a higher education and all have better chances in life.

The auction closes tomorrow. You will do nothing better today than get involved with this one, which you can do here.

The problem with the veracity of what was alleged to have been said is that I don’t think Tonev would be able to say ” Get your hands off me”. I have had advanced students who’d struggle to come up with that and get it right grammatically. So if that was misheard then there is every chance the rest was.

A few folk mentioned Dallas. Why should Celtic have commented? It had nothing to do with us.

I understand this which is why it would have been a good idea to have cleared this up at the time. There should have been no need for a disciplinary hearing to establish what had actually been said. If Celtic had brought the parties together as most businesses would have done so. Then perhaps Logan would have accepted Tonev’s word and any misunderstanding could or should have been retracted on the day.

A man should not have his reputation tarnished and employment opportunities restricted without sufficient evidence to show that he made racist remarks.

Unfortunately we have an eager ‘anti racism’ industry which feeds witchhunts.

  12. From the 14th Oct 2014.

The Football Association is investigating a claim by Norwich striker Cameron Jerome that he was racially abused by Leeds defender Giuseppe Bellusci on Tuesday.

The pair clashed in the 1-1 draw at Carrow Roadwhen Jerome, 28, reacted angrily to something the Italian said.

“Cameron has alleged that a racist remark was made,” said Canaries boss Neil Adams after the game.

“I don’t think he’d have reacted in the way he did if it hadn’t happened.”

Leeds owner Massimo Cellino has given his full backing to former Italy Under-21 international Bellusci.

He told the Yorkshire Evening Post:(external) “Bellusci is no racist. I spoke with him and he said ‘you must be joking, I said nothing like this to him (Jerome)’. He is surprised by this. He is shocked.

“I don’t allow racists at this club and I won’t allow racists at this club ever. If one of my players is a racist I’ll kick him out before the FA has a chance.”

Adams added that referee Mark Clattenburg, who stopped play to discuss Jerome’s claims with him and Leeds manager Darko Milanic, has taken post-match statements from both players.

Giuseppe Bellusci had only played in Italy prior to his summer move to Leeds

The 39-year-old official gave a warning to Bellusci, who joined Leeds from Serie B side Catania in the summer, following the incident. Moments later he booked Jerome when he clattered into the Leeds defender.

“Mark came over to explain to myself and Darko exactly what had happened to put everybody in the picture, which I think was the right thing to do,” added Adams.

“He spoke to the players and representatives from each club at half-time and he’ll be taking statements from the players involved.

“Mark will submit a report to the relevant authorities and it will be dealt with from there. He didn’t take any action at the time. He merely relayed what Cameron had said. It must now go through the proper channels.

“Yes, Bellusci is the player who has been alleged to have made the remark. My concern was to speak to Cameron at the break to make sure his head was right.”

Adams added: “We back our player. I’m sure Leeds will back their player, but other than that we can’t comment any further because there is now going to be an investigation I would expect.”

In his post-match interview, Leeds boss Milanic said he had not spoken to 25-year-old Bellusci about the allegations.

“It is difficult for me to comment because I didn’t hear anything,” he added.

You have a point, but we don’t know how Celtic and Aberdeen played this. Each club might have wanted to settle things but the player might have wanted to take it further, as is his right if he believed he had been racially abused.

  15. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Oscar Knox, MacKenzie Furniss and anyone else who fights Neuroblastoma on

INTRODUCING YOMPA & THE MOULDY OLD DOUGH

    Good Morning.

Let me tell you a story as Max Bygraves used to say.

The earth measures approximately 25,000 miles in circumference. Did you know that?

That is a long way round.

A few years ago we had never heard of Neuroblastoma, or at least I hadn’t, and then along came the request to try and raise some funds for a wee girl called Vanessa Riddle who was dying from the disease and who needed to find the outrageous sum of £500,000 for treatment that might — just might– save her life.

    Amazingly Vanessa raised that money.

Even more amazingly, despite having only a 14% chance of survival even if she received the treatment — VANESSA LIVED.

Since then, we have heard of campaigns for many children including Niamh Curry and our own wee hero Oscar Knox, both of whom sadly did not make it.

Others like Vanessa and Mackenzie Furness made it through.

However, in the course of campaigning for those kids, many really strong friendships were made and the awareness of this terrible disease, the ability to treat it, and the ridiculous cost of treating it was heightened.

However, perhaps the greatest of legacies or consequences of these campaigns has been the emergence of some truly fantastic people — amazing people who I for one hold in complete and utter awe.

So let me tell you about Yompa!

Of course Yompa is not his real name – he is really called Steve Taylor and he lives in Stewarton. Steve is 61 – almost 62 — and he has always done some pretty mad things like walking the odd mile or maybe 160 miles to raise money for charity.

Steve, for his sins, is a fan on Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC – no one is perfect right enough.

However, Steve also has a soft spot for the fans of Celtic Football Club and perhaps for the football club itself, what it stands for and what it does.

As a result of the Vanessa Riddle campaign then the Oscar campaign, Steve decided to take on a challenge for the NCCA fundraising team and decided that over a four year period he would cycle the equivalent of the circumference of the globe — yes just the 25,000 miles!

All for charity, in all weathers, in all terrains — in his early 60’s.

Why would you do such a thing?

    Because your mad? Certainly?

Because you are a good guy? Certainly

But most importantly — BECAUSE VANESSA LIVED!

If you look at the Neuroblastoma fund raising pages there are many campaigns where you will see pictures of children , like Oscar and Niamh who didn’t make it.

Then there are pictures of tots in cots, kids in cribs who are all fighting this disease now.

Their parents, like Stephen and Leona Knox, like Chris and Connie Riddle will go to bed each night worried, fearful, anxious, tired and at times very very down.

However, I would hope that the last thing that enters their head each night is that VANESSA LIVED!

Vanessa Riddle is a remarkable young woman now. Strong. Brave. Knowledgeable.

She knows that she has been in a battle and that somehow, by some miracle, her genes and her chemical make up was such that with the treatment she survived.

It is important to remember that VANESSA LIVED not just for Vanessa and her parents but for all the other kids and parents who have faced, are facing and who will face Neuroblastoma in the face.

We on CQN played a part in the Vanessa story.

Now Steve Taylor — a mad sexagenarian who goes by the nickname Yompa — is cycling the equivalent of going round the globe for all the Vanessa’s , Oscar’s, Niamh’s, Mackenzie’s and others — because VANESSA LIVED.

Vanessa herself had spent a couple of years in Yorkhill Sick Children’s Hospital and just happened to be there where a group of Celtic players came round one day and was still there when they appeared a year later.

It was those PLAYERS who decided to make a fuss of Vanessa and made her a Celtic fan.

Think about that — THE PLAYERS.

Not you, not me — THE PLAYERS IN THE GREEN AND WHITE STRIPS AND TRACKSUITS.

Most of them were or are Millionaires but still they decided to take the time to fuss over this wee girl facing the most uphill of struggles.

    And VANESSA LIVED.

The Vanessa campaign absolutely inspired others up and down the country. If Vanessa could do it so could others.

I remember the flurry of activity from many on here who came from Ayrshire just like Vanessa but the one that comes to mind instantly is Angel Gabriel organising bucket collections in football pubs and just handing in the money — buckets of it.

There were many stories like that and the CQN donations on the just giving pages were huge.

Don’t get me wrong, there were many from other Celtic boards like The Huddleboard, Kerrydale Street, Mailey’s Boys, E-tims, and oh so many more.

Supermarket collections, primary schools, churches, offices, factories all started to root for Vanessa.

It is that movement and that feeling of togetherness that unites us as human beings. Forget our differences and concentrate on what we have in common, what we feel in common, and most importantly what we can do when acting as one.

Crazy Steve is not alone in his quest for raising funds for the NCCA.

Our own Mouldy67 is one of the “Cycling Santa’s” who will cover the journey from London to Belfast as Santa Clause this Christmas in aid of the NCCA.

Mouldy — Paul Muldoon — proudly boasts on twitter that he is a Celtic fan and rides under the banner TEAMOSCARFOREVER.

He too believes in raising the money against this horrible but beatable disease.

The involvement of Celtic fans in these campaigns has led the Celtic Charity Foundation to become actively involved in helping the NCCA to raise funds and the charity is one which is supported by the club.

THIS IS BEING RECOGNISED ON SATURDAY WHEN AT HALF TIME TONY HAMILTON WILL WELCOME STEVE TAYLOR FROM THE RANKS OF THE INVERNESS FANS IN THE VISITORS SECTION AND MAKE A PRESENTATION TO HIM.

Steve Taylor — otherwise known a s Yompa — The Inverness Caley fan inspired by Celtic fans receiving acclaim at Celtic Park — who would have thought it?

And standing beside Tony Hamilton for that we ceremony will be…. VANESSA RIDDLE!

    Because you see VANESSA LIVED

And there are families up and down the country who cling to that thought every night.

one man’s word against another. That is not evidence. A reaction means nothing and more importantly proves nothing. Anyway, that’s all from me on the matter.

  26. I have no doubt shay Logan has acted honestly in all of this. His manager, team mates and friends all believe him. They have no reason not to.

    Why make it up?

Alex Tonev also has the support of his manager and team mates (presumably). He maintains he said nothing racist and will appeal.

If it wasn’t a Cetlic player involved, would we be more likely to believe Logan? If it happened in Ayr Utd Vs Alloa would i believe the accusor instead of the accused? I probably would. I would have little concern for the details and make a decision based on the headlines. That is reality of our modern world.

The one thing missing however, is proof. Logan’s reactions prove he thought he was racially abused. The don’t prove that this abuse actually happened.

The ban will be overturned on appeal. There can be no other outcome, based on the lack of proof.

Exactly, we don’t know how both clubs played this and it’s a good point you make in relation to Logan. However I think if Celtic or Aberdeen had requested and immediate meeting then both players would have had no option but to attend.

Looking at this not solely as a football club but as a business, you’d want to do everything possible to get to the truth and as quickly as possible. Waiting for a corrupt body like The SFA should have not been the preferred option for either club. Perhaps lessons should be learned here for any future flash points.
