Guidetti the exceptional talent

1003

We’ve had a few free kick experts in modern times.  Lubo was first.  He could hit them, and score with them, with either foot.  The man was a menace to opponents on many levels.  He also taught us that hitting the ball as hard as possible into an opponent’s body, standard fare for Celtic in the 80s and early 90s, was a poor return from a dead ball situation.

Lubo clearly influenced Shaun but it wasn’t until Naka arrived that Shaun really found his grove.  With right footed Maloney and left footed Nakamura lining up behind the ball keepers were forced to leave a vulnerable space at any centrally-located free kick.

I don’t remember any player scoring with three consecutive free kicks, an absolutely exceptional feat.  John Guidetti is proving to be an exceptional player.  From what I hear he’s also enjoying being a Celtic player, there’s been a meeting of minds on what is expected and what’s on offer.

This is a young player who has already learned a few lessons on football clubs and career management.  He has the makings of a Celtic legend.

Those of you who weren’t there last night, make sure you see the goals.  Four of them were exceptional.

Many thanks to everyone who has big on our auction for two debenture seats for the Inverness game on Saturday, courtesy of Celtic sponsor, Magners.  Funds raised go towards building our forth kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi, specifically for the 909 children who attend Chibwata Primary School in Dowa, which currently doesn’t have a kitchen.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, but………  things are improving.  93% of your money raised is getting to the projects on the ground, Mary’s Meals are now feeding hundreds of thousands of kids there each day, over 2000 of them in kitchens CQN readers have already built.

Kids who are fed at school there are able to attend instead of having to work for food – primary school attendance is up 30% after Mary’s Meals build a kitchen.  As a result they all get a basic education, some of them are set on a road to a higher education and all have better chances in life.

The auction closes tomorrow. You will do nothing better today than get involved with this one, which you can do here.

  1. The SFA are using the balance of probability in coming to their decision, which in the serious nature of the allegation and it’s repercussions is dangerous.

Can the panel say without fear Tonev said the words, no they can’t.

That is the facts of the matter, no one can argue against it.

    Ayrshire is Green and White

  2. Doesn’t this just show the need for corroboration before any action can be taken against an individual? One person’s word – however honest – should never be enough to convict.

Now do those who supported the SNP government’s proposal to remove corroboration from criminal trials understand why many of us opposed it?

  3. Not sure what to make of the Tonev situation was there any witnesses to what he said ? However if he did racially abuse Shay Logan he should be sent back to Villa as soon as.

Our fullback was having a hard time with the other teams winger

After a while he shouted “mind your back elbow”

The winger(a black guy) went mad, accusing our guy of racial abuse

It kicked off until his team mates told him that the guy never said “black elbow”

  5. I think you’re all being a bit harsh on the SFA. They have an excellent track record of kicking anti-Irish racism out of Scottish football over the years.

  7. I agree Stringer Bell with your assessment. Hopefully on appeal the SFA will see sense. First Legia Warsaw then Tonev- we have been dragged through the mud a bit recently have we not?

Uncollaborated evidence does leave the game open to abuse. What is to stop any player suddenly feigning outrage at a non existent remark to unsettle a player or disrupt a game?

I remember watching ac milan I think it was, walking off the pitch after receiving racist abuse during a friendly. I was sitting there thinking, if this is repeated, fans will soon pitch up in the opposition fan end making monkey noises trying to get the game abandoned and a 3-0 victory awarded.

I am close friends with an pakistani family. Their daughter was first racially abused in the street in front of her mum at the age of three.

It has been used as such. The question is whether it is sufficient. I’m guessing the SFA must have heard other cases and established this (one man’s word against another’s) as their standard of proof. What were those other cases?

  12. The Battered Bunnet on

Let’s allow that Logan is being truthful. He believes Tonev abused him using racist terms.

He has reported it to the ref at the time, and maintained his belief since.

Tonev accepts that he spoke to Logan, but denies using racial terms.

Both positions, while apparently contradictory, can be true. The issue is not actually what Tonev said. It’s what Logan believes he heard.

The SFA, as I understand it, took 5 hours to hear the matter and come to the view, based on the balance of probabilities, that Tonev used the terms Logan believes he heard.

    There are tow intesting aspects:

Firstly, that the SFA in the first instance felt compelled to come to a binary decision.

I would be interested to better understand, given the competing versions of events, neither of which can be proven, why the panel elected not to use the customary ‘not proven’ route.

And secondly, their decision, in the absence of direct corroboration, to take one player’s word over the other. That sets a very uncomfortable precedent. Notwithstanding that Tonev’s reputation is considerably impacted, it opens the door to all manner of subsequent bother.

  15. Re Tonev decision.

If we had Super Ally as manager he would demand that the SFA panel be identified. Then we could all debate why there are no women or visible minorities on the panel ! It’s good that Celtic are dignified.

Bob Kelly (faults and all) would have sorted out the SFA a long time ago.

You’re going full pedant here (which I heartily applaud). I think most people would assume the commenter meant it wasn’t conclusive evidence.

That said, I actually think in this kind of debate it’s important to state things totally clearly so that assumptions cannot or do not need to be made.

A very good point. SFA apparently regulate all football leagues in Scotland. Where are all the women and minorities in their ranks? Should public money be given to such an organisation? Somone should start an online campaign…

  19. What will be interesting to see if it ever comes out post appeal is the input of the Referee in his report. Someone who not that long ago had a dreadful performance and the NL incident which led to post match fallout that ended with Madden being sent to lower leagues. Potential for some payback here.

No doubt SL believed what AT has been accused of saying but word recognition can totally alter interpretation. I recall Willie McStay on SSB explaining away a view which included a reference to ‘country’ but the delay in him speaking let everyone think they hear him say C*** which even he said at the time.

No-one is disputing Logan’s reaction, but that’s hardly a high standard of proof for such a clear-cut decision. It suffers the same criticisms as the one man’s word against another’s argument – see TBB’s post at 10:49.

“The term “racial discrimination” shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction, or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin that has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life”

Any other crimes where this is used other than sexual? where I believe corroboration is often non existent.

If that is the line the SFA are going down, everyone is guilty…

  25. What Tonev actually said was…..

“I say old chap would you be so kind as to remove your hands from me, thank you so much”.

  26. Oh I forgot.

If Tonev takes the spfl to court do Celtic get a doing from UEFA?

    Or sumfin’?

  27. Ah so it’s all about the reaction.

So when there’s a hard but fair challenge in a game now and someonetakes exception and goes berserk the ref should always send the guy off who made the challenge.

  28. This is the self same FA who absolutely hammered Andy Goram for calling PVH a Black B****** then confirming it in print, the same Andy Goram photographed with UVF ‘friends’

Hammered, as in, inviting him to draw teams for a cup comp live on TV.

    Not quite.

First you should report your concerns to the referee.

Then you should report your concerns to your team mates.

Then you should report your concern to your manager.
