Saint Ambrose and Saint Pat’s Dumbarton were the only two teams better than our Saint Tams team in late 70s early 80s. Non denom schools hated our success. Holyrood soothside had a great team too.

Never played Saint Augustines Coatbridge. Only one I played was Milton.

    ———————————-

Are you sure. I think St Mungo’s was still the best football team. In fact I think St Mungo’s were the most successful Scottish school for football.

And if you really want a debate on it then St Mungo’s were the first Scottish school representing the UK at the world parliamentary debates . Incidentally they were placed first.

    HH pedantic ccs.

A fair few members of this site attended St Mungo’s. Including the much-missed THEBARCAMOLE.

    Also,another much-missed poster,MIKI67-his father,I believe,taught History there.

  12. According to the Scottish Schools site, the Senior Shield winners top team in each decade was :-

    50’s- Bellahouston Acad- won twice

60’s – Liberton Acad- won twice

70’s- Holy Cross- won 3 times

    80’s- Holyrood- won 3 times

90’s- won by a different school each year- a different Lanarkshire school won 4 of them though

2000’s- OLHS M/well and Knightswood Acad- both won twice

This decade- a different school in each of the 8 years so far

It might be a fairer test, because of school leaving drop-outs, to look at the U-17 and U-16 winners to see if a different picture emerges.

    Under 17’s are:-

1970’s- started in 1974- No school won more than one- 1 Glasgow school, 3 lanarkshire (2 Coatbridge) an embra team and a Falkirk one

1980’s- a different team each year- 4 from Glasgow

1990’s- ran to 97 with a different winner each year (4 Lanarkshire schools- 2 of them from Coatbridge)

    Under 16’s-

    1950’s- St. Gerard’s Glasgow won 2x

1960’s- Camphill , Paisley won 1 time and were joint winners on another occasion

    1970’s- Different winners- 4 Lanarkshire , 2 Glasgow

1980’s- St. Ambrose- 2x. An RC school won 8 out of 10 years

1990’s- Cardinal Newman, Bellshill (2x) 6 Lanarkshire schools won and 8 RC schools

2000’s- Different school each year- 2 from Glasgow and 2 from Lanarkshire

this decade- Holyrood (2x) 3 Glasgow, 2 Lanarkshire, 5 out of 8 were RC shools

Lanarkshire schools seem to come out on top. Holyrood may have the best overall record though.

    SFTB.

The winners in 2008 were OLHS Cumbernauld.

    Not OLHS Motherwell.

Hopefully that doesn’t come across as too pedantic, but it’s the only time OLHS Cumbernauld have won it and indeed only time they have been in the final. They beat another of our esteemed posters moniker Cults 2.1 in the final.

    Hail Hail

  14. SFTB

    Good link that.

I think DD must be thinking of other competitions as the only decent school teams to come out of the west Glasgow/Dumbartonshire areas have been , St Andrews Clydebank in early 80s and St Pats ,Dumbarton late 80s.

In recent time St Peters the Apostles had a good team …but that was almost a decade ago now. 2010

  15. The late much loved Tommy Burns went to St Mungo’s.

Has any school provided more Celtic players ?

  16. When we played against All Saints Barmulloch (70’s), the full team consisted of Celtic Boys Club players as they wore the Celtic shorts and socks.

  17. Guys a good debate about School football.

My own kids are up and left School now, but is School Football not heavily in decline due to budget cutbacks. From primary to secondary school. I think this is one of the reasons that our national team and clubs are not producing the talent of yesteryear.

All IMO of course and I could be wrong.

  18. My friends in Celtic,

My thoughts on the game yesterday: Three points but hard to watch again.. At least I was watching it in a nice warm boozer.

    Where is the entertainment?

    Where is Moussa ?

A curate’s egg,as I said around midnight. I was trying to change the subject from the golf, onwhich one poster wasn’t doing well(!)

I’m very concerned about Moussa. We have a player-and-a-half there. But not at the moment. One-on-one,or three yards out, makes no difference at the moment.

It’s a horrible place to play football,so I’ll take the three points. But I feel so sorry for people who paid for it.

  20. I’m not too concerned about Moussa tbh. More concerned about the pedestrian nature of our play and the low tempo we seem to adopt to every game these days. And yet, if there was ever a Celtic team I would bet on upping it’s game domestically at the right time, then it’s this one.

Sunday will take care of itself, one way or another.

    I’m with ya,brother!!!

I always expect us to win. Every game. Once I put my Celtic heid on.

  22. BMCUW & SAN LUIS.

Yes I agree next Sunday will take care of itself.

But do our players only raise their game against the Huns. ? The answer to that question could raise more unpalatable questions.

I think BR is the ideal fit for Celtic and I hope he is with us for a very long time. However we are not entertaining to watch and I agree, the pedestrian nature of our game is concerning.

We only won it late on against the huns last month, but nearly every time we had the ball,we played it to a player on the move.

First touch takes you past your opponent, the enthusiasm and confidence flows, players are playing how they like to play.

    Since?

    Blinkin’ flip.

  24. Not too worried about the cup semi.

Lustig, Rogic, Armstrong and Forrest all back and well rested. Mibbe see Leigh on from the start, so there is half an outfield team to make a difference.

Hopefully the pitch hasn’t cut up too much the day before.

I will settle for any 5-0 doing of the mankies any day.
