Has this been our most successful transfer window ever?

288

It is not like Celtic to have no one to parade on deadline day, just as it is not like Celtic to have us glowing with contentment at the business they did early in the window.  Reo Hatate (24), Daizen Maeda (24) and Yosuke Ideguchi (25) arrived from Japan, where today Daizen made a 68th minute appearance from the substitutes bench in a World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia.

Matt O’Riley (21) arrived from MK Dons, in the third tier of English football.  Matt has played one year of first team football, clearly a productive one.  His early Celtic performances reinforce the encouraging signs we heard from EFL watchers.  Johnny Kenny (18) arrived from Sligo Rovers as a development prospect.

Maeda scored within minutes of his debut, then watched Hatate steal the show and deservedly grab the Man of the Match award.  Ideguchi came on as a late sub against Hibs before being brutally injured at Alloa.  The early form of all three is encouraging, especially as they cope with living on a new continent, among new coaches and teammates.

We retained all first-choice players, with some on the fringes going out on loan.  The major disappointment was that none of our well-paid bench sitters left.  Has this been our most successful transfer window ever?  Stay tuned to find out.

All the noise in town yesterday came from across the city, where Newco acquired a midfielder who has made seven 90-minute league appearances since August 2017 (only one since going to Italy in 2019).   A friend suggested this was a classic Hail Mary move, although I’m sure that is not how they look at it at Ibrox.  Not all intercessions happen.

Later this month we face Raith Rovers in a Scottish Cup tie.  As things stand, they will field David Goodwillie, whom they signed last night.  Goodwillie was found to have raped a woman at a civil trial in 2017.  Fair play to Rovers fans for their overwhelming opposition to the signing.  They have a fight on their hands for the character of their club.

The Japan – Saudi Arabia game is due to finish around 12:10 UK time.  Hopefully by the time you finish reading this Daizen is in a taxi on his way to the airport.  There will be a good hour in his legs tomorrow night.

  1. Bada,

Very little comment at the weekend about the reaction of Jordan White after scoring against Sevco.

    He looked distraught.

Compare and contrast with elbow swinging thuggery against Celtic.

    Football on BBC1 just now.

What does it say about football’s morality …

….. that a convicted, drug dealing, money laundering felon

….. having wreaked absolute misery on communities with his wretched trade

.. can be found “fit and proper” by the SFA?

re write off of covid contracts,no claw back then eh,all those Billions going to embed in the next generation of the British caste/class system,oh we will have enquiry after enquiry but it won’t matter, the poor will pay as you say

jeez how I wish I bid for and got a covid contract, with no company set up yet just like wee Michelle money, most of the cabinets friends did,and what a lucrative business covid has been for them.

They have had their eyes on various pension pots for years, inspired by the likes of Maxwell, then the ex bhs owner who saw his staffs pension pot as his play thing and when his company went down a wee transfer of ownership to his Mrs meant millions went away.

Spivery of the highest order but when the bills settle it is a transfer of wealth as you refer to from poor to rich.

Maybe this is what Liz(of the 500k plane flight) Truss meant when she said “we” have to pay for covid.yeh have a party and we all pay for them

Thanks for the spelling correction but you may have noticed I got there first. My ASN teacher checked it for me – just as well.

Had I spotted your correction I would not have commented.

You don’t realise this but you are no longer able to view this dispassionately. You are too invested. That’s why you use the very recent admin/ liquidation laws to dismiss the good old “bankrupt” Hibs. Same thing and you know it is.

    ————————————

I love it when someone else tells me what I don’t realise, as in how the feck would they know?

The narrative I point to is totally supported by evidence and the result of hard work keeping track of it.

Don’t you realise the difference between fact and fiction?

Did Hibs in 1893 put the rest of Scottish football in peril when going insolvent?

Did Gretna a few years ago?

    Spot the difference.

I missed this bit of misinformation.

” The 5 way agreement is a standard process which allows a reincarnation of an old club to proceed as long as no football debts are left unsettled. It happens under FIFA guidance all over the world. The only difference in our backwater is we set up tribal sides – same club/new club – and anyone questioning that – reincarnation of an old club – is a hun or fenian. Depends who you talk to!! ”

FIFA treats insolvency of a club on a case by case basis.

UEFA treat it according to a set of rules applied to all clubs in Europe the result of which meant when Rangers went into liquidation their SFA membership lapsed in 2012 and Sevco (renamed Rangers) as a new club were ineligible to apply for a UEFA licence until they had been member of the SFA for 3 years.

After 3 years they became eligible and could apply submitting the new clubs latest accounts to SFA to obtain a licence.

It was on the basis that Rangers FC PlC in liquidation no longer existed as a club as UEFA define one that allowed Traverso to justify not investigation events in 2011 i.e no club left to apply football sanctions to.

You are on the wind up, you have to be or are just ignorant as in you don’t know what you are talking about.

  9. BACK TO BASICS @ 11:17

Excuse my ignorance-I don’t get the BBC – who are we talking about?

    Thanks.

“However I cant think of a single recent “box office” transfer/loan thats ended happily in Scotland . We have had our share Juniniho, Lunbreg, Bellamy, Keane (both).”

Robbie Keane and Bellamy made good contributions I’d say. But they hadn’t been out injured for long periods nor were their careers grinding to a halt and needing rebuilding. Joe Hart could fall into the “box office” category and that’s turning out pretty satisfactorily. But in general I’d agree with you.

  11. Everthing av read says Putin will hold off till after the Olympics…then will hav to back down…massive economic sanctions will bankrupt Russia…who are close to it already…his stance on Ukraine is posturing that he can’t afford to back up

  12. Am I nervous for tonights game…no, not really…and that scares me ;-))

3 nil and top of the league after 90 mins

    H.H.

  13. I am amazed that the Res 12 is still churning away on the blog.

I have followed it over the years and believed that some of those who invested time and effort were genuine and honourable in their intentions. Of course there was no shortage of ‘barrackroom lawyers’ – some are still practising.

However I have to say that the subject now bores me and after ten years surely enough is enough. In my opinion it rumbles on merely as a convenient vehicle to carry those who wish to batter the Celtic board and anyone else who goes through the door of Celtic Park wearing a ‘suit’.

Celtic were right to stay well out of the farce that engulfed Ibrox. It would have been splattered and soiled in the ongoing sh**-storm had it not. There was no immediate, nor, long-lasting damage to our club, we wouldn’t have been parachuted into the CL that season in any case. In fact from 2012 on we proceeded to enjoy the second-most successful period in the history of Celtic.

Although the handing out of formal punishment by the football authorities against Rangers FC was ridiculously light, the consequences of the wrongdoing was not – it was deep, far-reaching and fully deserved. That might not have been the case had Celtic, on its own, decided to get down into the hole that Rangers were digging and pick a fight on certain issues, either with a disintegrating Ibrox, or, the SFA & League. Public opinion and the attitude of other clubs in Scotland played in big part in the fiasco & Rangers were treated as a pariah by most. That may not have been the case with overt & targeted Celtic involvement. In such a scenario the press/media would have had the opportunity to work the ‘Old Firm’ angle and other clubs may have had second thoughts.

In the wider football world we would have been recognised and remembered as the world-renowned club that kicked its greatest rival when it was down…..we didn’t because we are bigger than that. Those running Celtic would have been acutely aware of this.

The lasting lesson must be that we are more vigilant, and so hopefully in future will not have to rely on the English Police to uncover corruption in Scottish football.
