Hayes, Koki Mizuno and the right-mid gap

1491

You and I have been doing this long enough to remember this place in meltdown at the prospect of Celtic signing a player from another SPL club. Domestically sourced talent was regarded as unimaginative, cheap, even. Contrast this with the utter joy when we signed Koki Mizuno, who was full-on exotic, but built for finer things then competitive football.

At 29, Aberdeen’s Irish international midfielder, Jonny Hayes is certainly unimaginative, and may be comparatively cheap, but he’s also a low-risk option for Celtic, who will know what they could get (and what they will not get) from the player.

With Patrick Roberts due to report to Manchester City on his return from holiday, Celtic are short of options for right-mid, with the first Champions League qualifier only five weeks away. The manager will view this gap in his squad as an unnecessary risk to next season’s objectives.

What a lot of complete and utter drivel being spouted on the rumoured arrival of Jonny Hayes.

It’s as if people are suggesting that Rodgers doesn’t know what he’s doing and has to scramble around looking for someone to bring in before the window “slams shut”!

If he wants the player, then he has a specific role that he wants him to fulfil.

He doesn’t have to tell us what it is.

The one dimensional football experts on here are beyond parody.

For what it’s worth, any time I have watched us versus Aberdeen, Hayes is the player I feared most.

So settle down and wait and see what transpires.

Anyway, haven’t you intellectuals got an Election to argue over!!

This season has shown the value of having good back up and if Hayes comes he will add some strength to our squad.

As TET pointed out Sinclair could probably have benefitted from a break to recharge the batteries a little but kept playing and might have been able to take that break at times with Hayes stepping in.

Lustig struggles to play too many games so we were able to bring Gamboa in to give him a break, but when our strongest team was called for, Lustig was back in.

Teirney gets a bad injury and we can call upon Izzy to hold that position and maintain that unbeaten run until Keiran returns.

Simonuvic, Sviatchenko and Boyatta have shared the starting berths as have Roberts and Forrest and Moussa and Griff.

Its good to have good cover and although Hayes may not be the exciting signing we would love to see, id say he will be as valuable to the squad next season IF he signs, as some of the players who were not immediate starters have done this year.

  5. Not been on for awhile, so salutations to all. Was sent this today and thought it was too good not to share on a Friday afto……

A duck walks into a bar in Dublin one day and orders a pint of Guinness and a ham sandwich.

The barman looks at him and says, “Here just hang on der! You’re a duck.”

“I see your eyes are working,” replies the duck.

“And you can talk!” exclaims the barman.

“I see your ears are working, too,” Says the duck.

“Now if you don’t mind, can I have my beer and my sandwich please?”

“Aye, aye. Right you are, sir. Sorry aboot dat,” says the barman as he pulls the duck’s pint.”It’s just we don’t get many ducks in dis pub.. What are yeez doing round dis way?”

“I’m a plasterer working on the new building across the road,” Explains the duck.

The flabbergasted barman cannot believe the duck and wants to learn more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out a newspaper from his bag and proceeds to read it.

So, the duck reads his paper, drinks his beer, eats his sandwich, bids the barman good day and leaves.

The same thing happens for the next two weeks.

Then one day the circus comes to town.

Eventually, the ringmaster comes into the bar for a pint and the barman says to him “Yeez are wit da circus, aren’t yeez? Well, I know a duck that could be just brilliant in yer circus. He talks, drinks beer, eats sandwiches, reads the newspaper an everyting!”

“Sounds marvellous, “says the ringmaster, handing over his business card. “Get him to give me a call.”

So the next day when the duck comes in, the barman says, “Here Mr. Duck, Oi reckon Oi can line ye up wi a top job, paying really good money.”

“I’m always looking for the next job,” Says the duck. “Where is it?”

“At de circus,” Says the barman.

    “The circus?” Repeats the duck.

    “Dat’s right,” Replies the barman.

“The circus?” The duck asks again. With the big tent?”

“Aye, dat’s de one,” the barman replies.

“With all the animals who live in cages, and performers who live in caravans?” says the duck.

    “Of course,” the barman replies.

“And the tent has canvas sides and a big canvas roof with a hole in the middle?” persists the duck.

    “Dat’s roit!” says the barman.

The duck shakes his head in amazement, and says ………………………………………

“What, in the name of feck, would they want with a plasterer??!”

Aberdeen based take on Jack and Hayes..

    ==================================

What the hell do you think you’re doing bringing some informed and considered opinion into this afternoon’s bedlamites’ barney?

Also, brilliantly, we are informed Johnny Hayes is/was/could be a member of Dublin and Wicklow LOL, a right sash-bashing wee Tangoman.

This is going to be an epic weekend on CQN freneticism, akin to the Witchsmeller trials on Blackadder Season 1. The hair proves it!

In other news, JF informed me I’ve only a single brain cell.

As that is one more than the average Hun, I’m actually feeling quite chuffed at the compliment and will now treta myself to a Costa cap, medium, probably the Colombian blend for 90s clubbing sentimental reasons…

  8. I was just thinking if Pedro signs any more Portuguese, Mexicans, etc he might end up with a team of fenians. How is he going to (will he want to) stop themselves blessing themselves on the park?

Wee Jimmy Bell-end will be apoplectic. Could they become the 21st century Pope’s Eleven :-))

  9. From KDS

Aberdeen want £1m plus Christie. Celtic want to keep Christie and do a cash only deal. Likelihood is it will happen.

  10. Would it sit better with some if we signed JH’s foreign cousin with the more exotic-sounding surmane?

    Sandman…

That’s why I rarely post nowadays I don’t want to disturb the natural order more than is necessary.

It was a bit of ‘I told you so-ism’ on my part. The lad is AFC best player. A big loss to them. And at least a small gain for us.

  12. If “ifs” and “ands” were pots and pans we’d aw be tinkers.

Mind you if it wasn’t for making things up to then argue about, then it would be a quiet blog :)

    Couple of things.

CL qualification is a series of cup ties. In any cup tie you can get knocked out or the player who will “guarantee” * a place in the next round might be injured.

The seeding for qualifying rounds, if like last year, will present similar challenges, which I think we overcame against the odds. New manager, new players, new system of playing, lack of match fitness. Those odds are not what they were last year. Churn and lack of match fitness is the biggest risk to CL qualification. The match fitness might still be there but Celtic were a very fit side this season ended so it might not be a factor in early round.

Id love us to sign Paddy Roberts, top entertainment value, but if he is not willing to stay any replacement would cost at least what he was not prepared to accept.

He is a basket that we cannot put all our eggs in.

Signing Hayes only means what each of us want it to mean.

I think he is not capable of producing Roberts level of entertainment, but I think he is good enough to help an already settled side qualify.

I certainly had him as the one guy at Aberdeen who could hurt us and we are a team who qualified for the CL groups last year and were invincible in Scotland, so he is hardly going to be out of his depth.

  13. WITS. – the only surviving original Dubliner in John Sheehan I think. Like Kelly was reputed to be a good fitba player, not so sure about Sheehan – great musician but not sure what he’d bring to the wide right position in our team;)

  14. CultsBhoy - Believes in Brendan on

    Auld Heid..

I think Hayes showed how out of his depth he was when he ghosted in at back post to ram a goal. In and give us the jitters.

He would t be our best player but won’t be our worst and he will feature in our team regularly. He’s not a squad player.

  15. Back in the good ole days CQN transfers would be about who we weren’t signing.

‘We might do something, we’ll try and do something, we’ll do our best to do something’

  16. bmcuw just scrolled back bobby and seen your piece about voting thanks also thanks to ernie lynch who sent me some info by the way would be nice to have a gab about my old stomping ground the air ballon near you

  17. When all said and done, Paddy was a luxury, we were never in the hunt for him in reality so we did the next best thing and got him for 18 months on loan, a great bit of buniness imo.

I can’t see Brendan blowing whatever it will take to sign him permenantly, just can’t see it, I could if we were guaranteed to make the groups but we still have a minefield to navigate.

  18. I wonder how many would be complaining about signing Willie Wallace had the blog existed in the 60’s. I trust Brendan Rodgers #Invincibles. Anyhoos we go through this Sh!te every close season and nobody seems to learn. When the Club announce a signing then it will be kosher.

  19. mike in toronto on

    Hello lads..

I see the CQN shia/sunni debate is in full swing …. its a blog (which, by its nature, means its not important) about football (its just a game) …. now, if we were debating our Board, that’s different ….:)

    I noticed this in A Stor’s post at 1:16 pm…

“Findlay: common sense tells you no-one can guarantee the result of a game of football, “you cannot just buy success”

Is he taking the piss, or do implied promises of career advancement and/or a lucrative career on the dinner speaking circuit, in return for a dodgy penalty or two when the zomibes are trailing constitute buying success? and then, of course, there is the little thing called the Big Tax Case….

bloody lawyers… cant trust a word that comes out of their mouths!

  20. Scrolling back I see I’m on the same page as Donald Findlay with regards to guarantees in football.

” Findlay: common sense tells you no-one can guarantee the result of a game of football, “you cannot just buy success”

    Should I be worried?

  21. This stuff about people moaning cause it’s a Scottish based player … it’s just bollocks.

Armstrong was hailed as a great signing. Most were in favour of signing Leigh. No-one would have the slightest objection to us going out and buying John McGinn of Hibs – indeed, I hope that’s a deal we’re working on and can close quickly. He is a kid with enormous potential.

This issue – the ONLY issue – is that if this is the replacement for Roberts it’s not that great.

Not because Hayes is not a decent player … but because Roberts was an exceptional one. Is Jonny Hayes the Champions League type player we have every reason to expect? Is anyone going to even try and make that argument? Of course not.

Honestly, I struggle to see which part of that is hard to comprehend for people.

Are fans not allowed to act legitimate questions?

Think I will wait to see who we actually sign before hitting meltdown, James.

Now, for my summer sport does anyone else think the video of Tiger Woods that have been released are imo simply to humiliate him? I thought it was shocking.

He needs support not public humiliation

That stuff should not be available to the public, it’s between Woods, his lawyers, and the police.HH

  23. !!BADA BING!!

I’ve heard about this video. If it’s what you and others have suggested then it’s outrageous that it’s out in the public view. That has to be an invasion of privacy.

Auld heid … you and I also seem to be on the same page…. not sure if that is more or less worriying than Findlay for you!

a lot of what is filed in criminal proceedings in many US states is publicly available … in fact, some states even post mug shots online! Not joking…

but like you guys, I struggle to see the enjoyment that some people seem to derive from seeing these sorts of things …

  26. Hayes out before he comes in :) not that it matters but i just dont think Hayes is good enough for Celtic we are going down 5 notches from Paddy if we sign him
