Hibernian 0-5 Celtic

677

A five star performance from Celtic extended their lead at the top of the table to an incredible 17 points as Anthony Stokes and Gary Hooper dictated the pace and outcome of the game.   Stokes made sure he got on the end of a Charlie Mulgrew corner on 14 minutes to head the opening goal from inside the six yard box.  Six minutes later it was 0-2 when Hooper collected on the halfway line before playing a forward pass to Stokes.  Stokes advanced into the box before slipping the ball to Hooper, who slipped the ball underneath Graham Stack from 10 yards out.

Hibs first genuine attempt arrived midway through the first half when Adam Matthews failed to deal with a long ball and was robbed by Stevenson but Fraser Forster saved.  Wotherspoon then had a good chance 8 yards out when he met a cross from the left but his attempt went wide.

Celtic should have had a penalty when Anthony Stokes again rushed into the box before cutting back and had his ankles clipped but the referee  waved play-on.

Two minutes after the break Charlie Mulgrew removed any remaining doubt about the result.  Gary Hooper was fouled 23 yards from goal and Mulgrew thundered the resulting free kick into the far corner of the net.

Hooper and Stokes linked again when the former back-heeled for the latter but Graham Stack blocked the shot from 12 yards.  Hooper’s second goal of the game arrived seven minutes into the second half when James Forrest passed to Mulgrew who fed Hooper.  The striker’s shot bobbled over the diving Stack into the net.

A careless back-heel by Kelvin Wilson was collected by Gary O’Connor who crossed for Leigh Griffiths but Forster collected comfortably.  The rout was completed when Stokes fed substitute Kris Commons whose wayward shot struck the knee of Ki and deflected into the net.  Joe Ledley almost made it six when he won a header from a Ki corner but his attempt rebounded off the bar.

  1. On the subject of Journalistic allegiances. Back in the 90s I went to Uni with Jim Traynor’s daugher (a wee darlin as well), and after years of asking her to give me a hint on her dad’s allegiances on the last day of Uni she told me her Dad was actually slightly Celtic minded around the breakfast table. Not so much a fan, but had Celtic sympathies. This is total truth, hard to beleive I know but I often think we do get a bit obsessed by who is for us and against us, but hey I’m in a very forgiving mood at the moment.

The BBC London website Sports/Football section shows the SPL league table with RFC in Administration with 51 points.

Perhaps the BBC London guys could notify their colleagues in Scotland that their SPL league table is out of date.

Some might speuclate as to why, when the whole of Scotland knows that the total number of points for that club is actually 51 points, BBC Scotland insists on knowingly showing a false and misleading SPL table.

It is not as if the recent points deduction is subject to any form of appeal either. Done and dusted, deduct ten points for going into Administration.

Fenlon is a big Celtic Fan

I have met him at Parkhead and on the plane from Dublin over to games I know lads that played with him at St Patricks Athletic and they had stories of home singing Celtic songs before games.

At the time he played for Linfield there was more money up north and thats why he went,I know a few lads that played up there (for Portadown, but thats another story)

I dont playing for Linfied and talking about what a big Celtic fan you are would be a good idea, but professional footballers go where the best money is.

One thing you can be sure of .Pat fenlon is a big Celtic fan

  10. they have never won it and never will on

    Exiled,

You are probably not 100% wrong about his dislike for us, not all sheep hate the buns but most do. He’s not originally from Aberdeen, Highlands somewhere and whilst there’s pockets of Timmery up there I’m guessing he’s more likely to have had Hun tendencies when growing up… I find living up here as I have for 20 years now that the Sheep really do hate both of us but that their hatred for them is just a fair bit greater and tolerate us winning only because it stops them from doing so.

  11. they have never won it and never will on

    antrimkev,

I doubt anyone in their right mind would mention their love for Celtic whilst playing for Linfield! Maybe he thinks he’s safe here in “coming out”…..

Pat Fenlon is a cracking bloke, when he was the Bohs manager he sorted tickets for a few bhoys to go to games at Celtic Park when they were like gold dust, had a few swallys in his company, as good a Tim as you will meet.

  16. Sixteen roads to Golgotha on

NORTHERN IRELAND legend Trevor Anderson knew Pat Fenlon had the bottle for anything when he saw him play a tape of Celtic songs in Belfast’s Shankill LOYALIST stronghold.

Midfield playmaker Fenlon had just won a trophy with Linfield — then bossed by Anderson — and was celebrating with team-mates on an open top bus.

The pint-sized star, poised to be confirmed as Dundee United’s new manager, hadn’t long become one of the first Catholics to play for the previously notorious Protestant club.

Fenlon was quick to win the hearts of the Linfield support as his dazzling skills helped inspire them to title and Cup glory.

Ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland striker Anderson regards him as one of the most gifted players he has ever managed.

And over a decade on he still marvels at the courage Fenlon showed in joining Linfield and facing up to vile abuse from a bigoted element.

Anderson, 58, told SunSport: “It took courage for Pat to sign for Linfield because of his background — especially because he supports Celtic!

“I got wind he was set to sign for Ards and arranged to meet him before anything was finalised. Thankfully, I managed to persuade Pat to come to Linfield. I think he realised he would be joining the best.

“And he proved to be a great signing for me and the club. He was no bother whatsoever.

“The players loved him, including Dessie Gorman who I’d made the first catholic to play for Linfield.

“All I was interested in was a player’s ability — nothing else, as it should be.

“Fortunately, all of that stuff is now firmly in the past.

“Anyway, we won four trophies in one season and were celebrating.

“Now you’ve heard of the Shankill, eh?

“Well, after our success, we had an open top bus to go through Belfast. And Pat actually put a Celtic tape on! It was taken in the best way and everyone laughed.

“Let me tell you that after a few months at the club he started to be known as Billy Fenlon, not Pat.

“That said it all about how well he settled in at Linfield.

“After he left us on freedom of contract he joined Shamrock Rovers, the Celtic of Ireland.

“And would you believe he took dog’s abuse from their supporters — because he’d played for Linfield.

“That’s what it was like back then. Thankfully, it’s all changed.

“Pat has great strength of character and I can’t imagine there’s any challenge that would scare him. He’s from good stock.

“Pat was a great player. He could pass the ball and he could see things.

“He wasn’t exactly the biggest, but he had guts and wouldn’t shirk from anything on the pitch.

“Pat wasn’t frightened to get stuck in.

“He was a playmaker with a bit of dig.

“I always thought he could see passes that no other player in the Irish League could.”

Anderson added: “Pat’s a lovely fella and if he’s confirmed as Dundee United’s new manager then I wish him all the luck in the world. It would be a big step for him.

“He’s a deep thinker and someone who knows the game inside out. He’s studied it closely through the years.

“The fact he knew how to play the game was always going to stand him in good stead.

“I knew straight away that Pat was destined to be a manager and he’s had phenomenal success with Bohemians and Shelbourne.

“Now I hope he gets the chance to go on to bigger things.”

Fenlon, 40, flew back to Dublin yesterday after a Wednesday night flight was cancelled because of the weather.

Irish champions Bohemians are adamant United WILL pay compensation for their manager and are understood to be demanding £240,000.

United have offered less than that and it’s believed the clubs have agreed a 6pm deadline tonight to settle the deal.

Fenlon is also understood to be unwilling to walk away unless compensation can be agreed. If the clubs are still well apart tonight, then Tannadice chief Stephen Thompson could yet call off the deal.

Bohemians honorary secretary Gerry Conway said: “We are entitled to compensation, that’s the bottom line.

“Pat remains our manager without a compensation deal being agreed. He knows that — I have told him that.”

Thompson, meanwhile, said: “Dundee United have acted properly throughout our search for a new manager.

“We approached Bohemians for permission to speak to Pat Fenlon and only did so once they had faxed that permission.

“I would add that when they gave permission for us to speak to him, they did so without any pre-conditions.”

  20. very good weekend, we have a good young team that will get better as they grow together but we dont need to sell and should not be looking to sell. however, we will, i would think, consider any bid of nwetwwen 7-10 million for any player.

by releasing loovens, odea, thompson, wilson, cha and dan and by accepting any half decent offers for mccourt, mcginn, jaurez, murphy and radmussion we should be able to afford a quality young striker who is both strong and powerful as well as, FF and the players signed up in january, which will lead to a better squad than the one that finishes this season.

its up to lenny and co to ensure there is a steady flow of youngsters i.e. 16,17,18,19, 20 coming through the youth system and the front door every season ready to replace the previous generation of players when one moves on. celtic should have a first team squad of no more than 22 players, with youngsters waiting in the wings.

do that and lenny could be in the job for a decade or more and we might just start winning the league again and getting ourselves back into the CL on a regular basis, which will only improve our players value and the quality of young players willing to come to celtic because they will know they will get an opportunity to play.

Obviously he couldnt go to Celtic games when he played for Linfield as both were played on a Satuday ( I mistakenly typed Sunday earlier, league of ireland games were Sunday,Irish League games Saturday as you know)

A lot of season ticket holders dont get to games because of work commitments

    Does that make them huns

He is a Celtic fan and was a regular at parkhead when ever he could go.

So he played for Linfield (boo hoo)

    Get over it

  24. i also remember Billy fenlon and Loughie (Kieran Loughran) getting sent off for going toe to toe in a Reds v blues match at windsor (Linfields home ground because thats where Cliftonville had to play all their home/away/neutral games at – its like Celtic having to play all their home and away games v rangers and every cup match regardless of wether they were drawn at home or not)

and Billy giving the Cliftonville fans the fingers for asking him to bless himself
