Hibernian 1-4 Celtic

553

Celtic eventually overcame Hibernian at Easter Road in the Scottish Communities League Cup quarter final tonight but not until they endured a fraught first half.  The game was 3 minutes old when Ivan Sproule gave the home team the lead off an unfortunate Daniel Majstorovic.  A Hibs corner was not defended at the edge of the six yard box and had to be cleared off the line by Adam Matthews at the near post but Sproule fired the clearance into the six hard box where is ricocheted off Majstorovic and into the net.

Celtic struggled to get into the game but after 19 minutes Beram Kayal broke free on the right and crossed for Gary Hooper, who missed the ball with his leading foot and saw it bounce off his left knee and behind.

The best two chances of the first half for Celtic came within four minutes.  Ki and Hooper combined before Kayal released Stokes on 23 minutes but the Irishman’s shot skimmed the outside of the post.

In a move that would have a more productive second half facsimile, Stokes was unmarked at a Ki corner but missed the ball with his head and saw his shoulder contact go wide.

On 33 minutes Sproule ran half the field and cut inside Ki of the edge of the area before shooting over.    Minutes later Sproule released Agogo, who dispossessed Celtic midfielders throughout the first half, but Forrest saved at the big striker’s feet.

Five minutes from half time Leigh Griffiths should have doubled Hibs lead when Celtic’s scourge in recent times, the long forward ball, returned to haunt them.  Griffiths ran unattended from his own half but Fraser Forster did his best gable end impersonation to narrow the angle inside his box and block the shot.

Things soon picked up.

James Forrest underlined his Most Valuable Player status to Celtic a minute after the break.  Ki played a forward pass to Hooper on the edge of the area, which was nipped onto Forrest by the Celtic striker.  Forrest cut inside, dropped the shoulder and shot home from 17 yards.

It was a remarkably simple goal but the strength of shot by Forrest was particularly noteworthy.  Being able to shoot from the edge of the area is a crucial part of a wingers play.

Beram Kayal was booked on 48 minutes for being kicked in the face by Ivan Sproule, who also saw a yellow card.

Forrest got his second, and best, goal on 57 minutes.  He collected a throw-in on the wing, beat two Hibs players, played a one-two with Stokes and finished with a well-placed left foot shot.

Celtic then went into overdrive as Hibernian faltered.  Forrest skinned his marker and crossed but Ki slipped inside the box when the ball broke to him.  A minute later Anthony Stokes make a good connection with a Ki corner to head Celtic’s third goal from the six yard line.

Gary Hooper was having an off evening but he timed his run onto an Adam Matthews long ball, controlled and scored to finish off the scoring.  Ivan Sproule received his second yellow card 20 minutes from time for kicking Mark Wilson as he ran through on goal.  On this occasion his victim escaped punishment.

Defence is sh—, we know that. Injuries haven’t helped. Doesnt stop us being Celtic supporters or does it?

Lenny plays an expansive style. Matthews looks great coming forward but defensively…?

Cant understand why our manager persists with Kayal/Ki combo because they are both erratic and we need a touch of solidity in midfield. But Lenny is the manager and I am not so I will live with it and continue to support my team.

The way we set up, we will continue to be more vulnerable to leaking goals so we need to score more! (stating the flipping obvious!)

Whatever happens, I will be backing Lenny at least until the end of the season. It’s easy to have a go…and Lenny shouldn’t be immune to criticism but stop jumping on the hun band wagons and, at least, be constructive!

One example of the hun agenda. BBC Scotland last night! Prior to the game, this impartial broadcaster, fearlessly pursuing justice against our dodgy rivals, showed 2 hun goals against us (it may have been more as I fast forwarded through it), 4 Gary O’Connor goals for the hibees and one solitary Aiden McGeady penalty against der hun last time we won the mini cup. They couldn’t wait to talk about Lenny being one bad result away from the boot.

They are always the same. We are supposed to be different so stop proving me wrong!

  8. This may sound pessimistic but delighted as I am with the outcome of last night’s game, I really feel that the second half performance is just painting over the cracks of a shambolic defensive unit and a team without confidence or strong leadership. Let’s face it, first half we were just woeful. Get your CB to punt a long high ball up the field and most teams will have a player heading it clear. However, to beat Celtic, teams simply have to punt it up and get the ball bouncing on the ground, and after that first bounce all panic ensues.

I really think this assault and verdict has taken it’s toll on Lenny, on the touchline he isn’t as vibrant as he once was an as a consequence the players aren’t feeding off his energy and desire. I was bricking it every time the ball was near our back four, our two centre mids were MIA as frequently occurs with Ki and Kayal when the chips are down. Ledley is wasted out left and should start every game in the middle. I’m sure most will agree that our best midfield four are commons-ledlely-kayal-brown. Lets face it, we had a 20 year old to bail us out last night. Much as I’m beginning to doubt Lenny and his management team, he certainly shows he still has it in him to boot the arses of players and get a response at half time but waiting for his half time blasts will not win us the league. Had we been playing a team who were better than 9th place in the SPL we may well have been 2-3 goals down at half time.

On a positive note to end things, brilliant second half performance, wee Forrest was electric and was happy to see Paddy come on. IMO he should have been on earlier due to the attacking nature of Hibs line up but I that first half still sticks in my mind. I fear it won’t be the last time we play that poorly this season, but we’ll be punished for it. We still have the class, drive and ability to do well as the second half showed but our frailties are worrying and obvious. Let’s just hope we can get a run together and start playing with confidence and panache that we’re capable of. Cure the injured, settle the back 4 and let’s win this league! HH

  10. Folly Folly – We’re all having to work harder for a bit less, that’s just the way of the world at the moment.

I’m aware that, traditionally, the public sector paid relatively poor salaries and relatively good pensions and perquisites, and this informed many career decisions to pursue a life in the public services.

That isn’t true anymore. There was massive growth in both public sector salaries and public sector recruitment under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

As a result the six million people we now employ in the public sector are mostly significantly better off in terms of both salary and pensions than their private sector counterparts. Public sector employees earn more per hour than most equivalent private sector jobs, they take more sick days, they have more holidays, they enjoy greater job security, and their pensions are on better terms.

The government is trillions in the red, we are already spending tens of billions of pounds a year simply servicing the national debt, and the medium term fiscal prognosis is bleak. So, something has to give. The belt-tightening cannot be borne by the private sector alone.

So, while I can understand annoyance at the situation, I don’t think asking public sector employees to contribute 3.4 percent towards their own retirement provision is the awful, cruel, heartless, brutal assault on workers that it is being portrayed. If they decide to go on strike as a result of this, I doubt they will find much sympathy among people who make their living in the private sector. (thumbsup)

“We’re all having to work a bit harder” and

“I’m on the side of the hardworking”

Hmmm …. so when do you actually get round to doing a bit of work? :)

  12. I was pleased with the performance last night. We saw all we needed to know – i.e what works and what doesn’t work.

Basically the defence will not cope if we play open attacking football, but fail to press and play at a high tempo. In the SPL we should use our superiority and squad to press at all times. Indeed this really is the best attacking tactic of all, squeeze the other team back and apply relentless pressure on the ball. That’s how our team wins.

Kayal didn’t start playing well last night, but he did start chasing and pressing. If we’re turning over the other team and playing at tempo then nobody in the SPL will cope with the pace and movement of our forwards. If we don’t press the ball in the middle and let the other team turnover our possession cheaply (which is a flaw that will come and go, no matter what we hope for) then we’re in trouble.

Forrest – there’s a way to go for that lad, but boy does he have something a bit special about him. He’s not afraid to win.

Forster – another good performance in my opinion. Pleased to see a few opinions being turned. We’re way, way too harsh on that lad. His shot stopping is becoming a real bonus for us, and the flapping is minimal, isn’t costing us and will improve with the support of the fans.

I like Wanyama – he moves the ball well. And I thought Rogne defended his situations well, although his distribution isn’t great… at least he doesn’t take risks.

  13. Oh, yeah, and I wanted to say a little about Craig Whyte.

In the current climate his behaviour is exactly the kind of stuff that creates distrust for the financial services sector and undermines the economy. Notwithstanding all the mystery of his takeover, if he’s struck off and obligated to report this, then doesn’t… and get’s away with it. How can anyone take the markets seriously.

THe market relies on trust. Investors, you and I, will look at AIM or PLUS listings and try to work out whether that punt is good or bad based upon things like; are any of the directors criminals, struck off, serial bankrupcy merchants… I don’t suppose it affects Rangers investors the same, but it’s really high time these kind of things stopped and were treated as seriously as any other kind of fraud.

Mind your own business. If we want to strike to defend our previously agreed terms and conditions, what has that to do with you?

BTW, try comparing like with like! Public sector workers are better qualified than private sector workers (compared as a whole although the only reason for wanting to do this (taking into account the incredible diversity of jobs in both sectors ) would be to create an artificial competitiveness between the two factions-ie to suit a right wing agenda) which explains the pay differences.

Stick to the jokes as it is that aspect of your personality (rather than your politics) that makes you appealing and worth reading. IMO of course!

  16. Well done Celtic.

Having flown back from Spain for the game, and missed the first 20 minutes as a result of traffic,I can honestly say it was ideal, missed the bad bits, seen all the good bits.

Lets not forget we have 6 or 7 players missing, the majority of whom would be in or around the first 11.

  17. Everything about their goal was a fluke. Poorly taken corner manages to get to near corner unexpectedly, resulting in rushed clearance (which perhaps if I was being harsh might have been better), ball battered across goal hits an unfortunate DM, had he been two inches to the left or right it would not have been a goal.

I think even you would concede there is much more to this pension dispute business than you make out: I would aver that most workers (public sector or not; those contributing to a final salary pension scheme or not) would admit that in these straightened times we should all expect less by way of overall incomes. However, I would strongly argue that pensions are a special case: as we seem to agree, pensions are deferred income; for most this involves an actual and on-going deduction in income while in gainful employment; usually (though not always) with the prospect of additional employer contributions, plus tax and NI reductions. Likewise, I would imagine that most people who contribute to such schemes would accept that they may need to pay more, for the foreseeable future.

When one is asked not only to pay more but to pay longer and for less reward then, in my view, one has a justifiable grievance. Especially when there is such (growing) division between the haves and have-nots in our society; between those who have the resources to make significant choices in these matters and those who don’t.

Furthermore, I would also argue that to downgrade pensions in the ways being proposed are likely to have adverse longer-term costs for society as a whole, both in terms of social cohesion and general welfare.

In addition, these disputes about pensions are not solely to do with public sector, unfunded schemes. Many of those feeling aggrieved will be (or have been) members of schemes or plans which their employers have unilaterally reduced or withdrawn, without offering suitable alternatives; with employers themselves sometimes seeing significant savings in the process of reducing this vital benefit.

Not all those in employment are as financially savvy as you in these matters, nor as confident about making long-term, critical investment decisions. Employer-administered pension schemes are core benefits to workers and their families. The very least employers should do is engage in meaningful dialogue with those most affected by these proposed changes …

So far, this has been sorely lacking.
