Hibernian 1-4 Celtic

553

Celtic eventually overcame Hibernian at Easter Road in the Scottish Communities League Cup quarter final tonight but not until they endured a fraught first half.  The game was 3 minutes old when Ivan Sproule gave the home team the lead off an unfortunate Daniel Majstorovic.  A Hibs corner was not defended at the edge of the six yard box and had to be cleared off the line by Adam Matthews at the near post but Sproule fired the clearance into the six hard box where is ricocheted off Majstorovic and into the net.

Celtic struggled to get into the game but after 19 minutes Beram Kayal broke free on the right and crossed for Gary Hooper, who missed the ball with his leading foot and saw it bounce off his left knee and behind.

The best two chances of the first half for Celtic came within four minutes.  Ki and Hooper combined before Kayal released Stokes on 23 minutes but the Irishman’s shot skimmed the outside of the post.

In a move that would have a more productive second half facsimile, Stokes was unmarked at a Ki corner but missed the ball with his head and saw his shoulder contact go wide.

On 33 minutes Sproule ran half the field and cut inside Ki of the edge of the area before shooting over.    Minutes later Sproule released Agogo, who dispossessed Celtic midfielders throughout the first half, but Forrest saved at the big striker’s feet.

Five minutes from half time Leigh Griffiths should have doubled Hibs lead when Celtic’s scourge in recent times, the long forward ball, returned to haunt them.  Griffiths ran unattended from his own half but Fraser Forster did his best gable end impersonation to narrow the angle inside his box and block the shot.

Things soon picked up.

James Forrest underlined his Most Valuable Player status to Celtic a minute after the break.  Ki played a forward pass to Hooper on the edge of the area, which was nipped onto Forrest by the Celtic striker.  Forrest cut inside, dropped the shoulder and shot home from 17 yards.

It was a remarkably simple goal but the strength of shot by Forrest was particularly noteworthy.  Being able to shoot from the edge of the area is a crucial part of a wingers play.

Beram Kayal was booked on 48 minutes for being kicked in the face by Ivan Sproule, who also saw a yellow card.

Forrest got his second, and best, goal on 57 minutes.  He collected a throw-in on the wing, beat two Hibs players, played a one-two with Stokes and finished with a well-placed left foot shot.

Celtic then went into overdrive as Hibernian faltered.  Forrest skinned his marker and crossed but Ki slipped inside the box when the ball broke to him.  A minute later Anthony Stokes make a good connection with a Ki corner to head Celtic’s third goal from the six yard line.

Gary Hooper was having an off evening but he timed his run onto an Adam Matthews long ball, controlled and scored to finish off the scoring.  Ivan Sproule received his second yellow card 20 minutes from time for kicking Mark Wilson as he ran through on goal.  On this occasion his victim escaped punishment.

Yeah mate, a sobering thought. I didn’t know about that incident with you – heavy stuff fella. My old man actively hates going to Swinecastle now and has sat out two trips in two seasons, which for him is virtually unheard of. He says the atmosphere is more poisonous than Ibrox, and let’s face it, Lenny’s attack was the most shocking thing witnessed in a Scottish stadium in decades.

That club growing to become a New Rangers is something I hadn’t considered, and with heavy-duty impossibly deep pockets …

Brrrr. Yes, that’s a frightning thought alright …

  2. Sell Tynecastle and a quick flit to Murrayfield to cope with rising demand.

    Jobs a good un.

  3. Just read Paul67’s report.

    Well done the bhoys.

After Rennes and the dons it sounds like we may have turned a corner.

I notice a long injury list for us and the hun tiny squad is soldiering on. Kayal booked for being kicked in the face. This is the sort of information that archaeologists will cobble together in 2000 years from now and conclude that it was near November and the huns were about to go bust.

Delighted for Neil Lennon. I suspect the knives were being sharpened for him by our own Judases. He is all we have got.

I am off to cost a garden party in Thailand. The wife says I can use her friends as substitute tic fans. Hey hoh way to go.

Treble still on and I bet Sally is being hailed as a tactical genius.

Scorpion can’t swim and wants to cross river. He sees frog in river and asks him for a backie across river. Frog tells him to GTF as he will sting him with his fatal venom. Why kill us both protests scorpion. Frog agrees. Half way across scorpion stings frog. As they are dying drowning frog asks why kill us both ? Animal instinct I suppose says scorpion.

    Standing up for Neil Lennon

Delighted with the victory tonight, sickened reading back over some of the earlier posts though.

Most of us avoid the likes of the DR,for obvious reasons. But reading some the comments on this site, from alleged Celtic “supporters” is becoming tiresome in the extreme. You are depressing me.I would like to ask you this – What is your agenda, and why do you feel the need to try to undermine our club and our manager?

I do not know who you are,but i know this – You are not Celtic supporters.Maybe some of you are huns, incognito, that’s fair enough,i can accept that.Try yer worst William. As for the others – You are weak-minded individuals, you are not what we need, and we do not want you.And our away support will tell you the very same thing – You are either with us,or against us.

Also we lost two of our very best this week, two Champions: Joseph O’Neill and HT’s oul lad.REAL Celtic Supporters. What would they think, reading back over that diatribe, seriously? Maybe that result was for them.

Apologies for the rant, but some things have to be said. And fair play to all those that kept the faith earlier on,when we were losing – one legend in particular predicted that we would win 1-4,when we were 1-0 behind! :)

    8 PLAYERS OUT INJURED – 4 TROPHIES,STILL IN..!

    NLF/18 – KTF.

  6. We are a support that is over reactive. Always have been, particularly the younger ones.

Unfortunately the web records our initial knee jerk reactions to a win, loss, draw, bad tackle bad pass etc.

Positions then become entrenched and need to be defended.

Like my grandd kids after a wee spat, we’ll all be friends once we have slept on it.

I think that we are rollin’ Margaret McGill,a told P67 the same thing.Lenny is building something special here.Look at that wee team earlier, when they clicked – Total football it was, exquisite. Some clients on here will tell me that i am wrong, what i seen with my own eyes was not real,we lost a goal – So what? Clowns. What planet are these “supporters” inhabiting? Have they ever even played football, even went to a game? Seriously hink a lot of them are FIFA 2012 and Pro-Evolution on the PS3 and X-Box fs.

Thinking of buying that psychedelic Beattles cd,SGT.Pepper’s lonely Heart’s Club, think the name of it is? – that Yellow Submirine song put me off it a wee bit,but i may have judged it wrong. Not much decent music about these days.

Is it any good?(and obviously i will download it,just keeping myself right with the copyright)

    Apologies to the artists.

Good Morning from sunny Dubai and good to post positively about last night. It was a bad start for sure but recovery was encouraging. I read today James Forrest was told to change boots at half time. Why wait till half time and why make the mistake (of wrong boots) in first place.

Small margins of error make the difference and I hope we learn from this for future.

On subject of small differences, I also hope we are analysing (independently) why our injury list is much worse than others. Some say it is teams tackling us harder but I’m not sure about that (Bangura for example was training). for sure we can’t afford 100k of wages a week in the treatment room per week!

Injuries are costing Celtic millions of pounds. In sport, a main cause of injuries is training methods (overtraining) and i just wonder if that is a factor taking account of fact we have many games and less need for strenous training to maintain fitness.

A further pumping of Hibs (this weekend) may well just boost us up for a festive season drive – 60 days until XMAS!!!!

  17. Still too early to say what sort of morning it is but after last night’s result it is a good one, whatever the weather.

I see that Whyte is making news in the latest issue of Private Eye, Oct 28. Apparently he should have declared that he had been disqualified and banned as a director for 7-years. Perhaps this just slipped his mind? Article reads:-

    “PLANET FOOTBALL –RANGERS

EVEN those companies listed on the lighter regulated PLUS market, such as the Glasgow club, are required to provide the following regarding the company’s directors: “Details of any official public incrimination or sanction of such person by statutory or regulatory authorities (including designated professional bodies) and whether such person has ever been disqualified by a court from acting in the management or conduct of the affairs of a company.”

So how is it, therefore, that the circular issued by Rangers in June announcing that Craig Whyte had acquired control of the club and joined the board did not report that he had been disqualified, as reported last week by BBC Scotland Investigates! The programme revealed that Whyte had been banned in 2000 for seven years following an investigation by the Insolvency Service into one of several companies with which the supposed billionaire was involved in the 90s.

As the source for the disqualification information was the head of investigations at the Insolvency Service, it would seem there is some explaining to be done. Especially as Whyte is also associated with two FSA-regulated entities, Pritchard Stockbrokers and Merchant House group.”

  18. Good morning from MK where we’re forecast to have heavy rain today, seems its our turn today.

Last night’s performance was heartening in the respect that we saw a Celtic team wrestle control of a game and then proceeded to play football with confidence and a smile.

Confidence is still a little fragile but that is no surprise when considering the changes of personnel but there are definitely signs the momentum is building.

On an entirely different matter….Now that the Greeks have had their debt halved I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before the Republic get the same deal…..hmmmm

  19. Morning

Will Whyte sue Private Eye now?

Tomorrow’s payday, for me and the Huns apparently. Pretty sure my pay will be in the bank.
