Hibernian 1-4 Celtic

553

Celtic eventually overcame Hibernian at Easter Road in the Scottish Communities League Cup quarter final tonight but not until they endured a fraught first half.  The game was 3 minutes old when Ivan Sproule gave the home team the lead off an unfortunate Daniel Majstorovic.  A Hibs corner was not defended at the edge of the six yard box and had to be cleared off the line by Adam Matthews at the near post but Sproule fired the clearance into the six hard box where is ricocheted off Majstorovic and into the net.

Celtic struggled to get into the game but after 19 minutes Beram Kayal broke free on the right and crossed for Gary Hooper, who missed the ball with his leading foot and saw it bounce off his left knee and behind.

The best two chances of the first half for Celtic came within four minutes.  Ki and Hooper combined before Kayal released Stokes on 23 minutes but the Irishman’s shot skimmed the outside of the post.

In a move that would have a more productive second half facsimile, Stokes was unmarked at a Ki corner but missed the ball with his head and saw his shoulder contact go wide.

On 33 minutes Sproule ran half the field and cut inside Ki of the edge of the area before shooting over.    Minutes later Sproule released Agogo, who dispossessed Celtic midfielders throughout the first half, but Forrest saved at the big striker’s feet.

Five minutes from half time Leigh Griffiths should have doubled Hibs lead when Celtic’s scourge in recent times, the long forward ball, returned to haunt them.  Griffiths ran unattended from his own half but Fraser Forster did his best gable end impersonation to narrow the angle inside his box and block the shot.

Things soon picked up.

James Forrest underlined his Most Valuable Player status to Celtic a minute after the break.  Ki played a forward pass to Hooper on the edge of the area, which was nipped onto Forrest by the Celtic striker.  Forrest cut inside, dropped the shoulder and shot home from 17 yards.

It was a remarkably simple goal but the strength of shot by Forrest was particularly noteworthy.  Being able to shoot from the edge of the area is a crucial part of a wingers play.

Beram Kayal was booked on 48 minutes for being kicked in the face by Ivan Sproule, who also saw a yellow card.

Forrest got his second, and best, goal on 57 minutes.  He collected a throw-in on the wing, beat two Hibs players, played a one-two with Stokes and finished with a well-placed left foot shot.

Celtic then went into overdrive as Hibernian faltered.  Forrest skinned his marker and crossed but Ki slipped inside the box when the ball broke to him.  A minute later Anthony Stokes make a good connection with a Ki corner to head Celtic’s third goal from the six yard line.

Gary Hooper was having an off evening but he timed his run onto an Adam Matthews long ball, controlled and scored to finish off the scoring.  Ivan Sproule received his second yellow card 20 minutes from time for kicking Mark Wilson as he ran through on goal.  On this occasion his victim escaped punishment.

Celtic come back from a goal down away from home at a ground we always have difficulty at and what is the order of the day from some.

Celtic have had to endure the most horrific run of injuries imaginable…..key players many of them all out for extended periods.

The team is getting kicked off the Park just about every game we play. When we stand up to it swift justice is being administered by the MIB. No ifs, no buts. Kayal getting booked for being kicked in the face is a classic example.

Neil Lennon has had to endure what none of us will ever have to encounter, ever. Simply because of who what he is and what he stands for. I wonder how I would be under such provocation? How would you be?

We have a young team and a young manager who will get better if they are given the support and are allowed to play football.

When criticism is balanced, objective and accurate and takes in to account all that is going on it is welcomed. When such criticism becomes totally obsessive and self indulgent it is truly tiresome.

Sometimes some people can’t see the trees for the forest. Ahem!

A lot of what you said struck some chords with me :) But i also value the posts of James Forrest – your passion is clear amigo, but you can be too confrontational…although you usually calm down and show respect for those that disagree with you.

I’m only partaking of this wee inside debate as clyde9-1 should be allowed to post his thoughts as well without being retaliated against by 2 people, one of whom has questionable credentials, not naming any name Cultsbhoy..:) Wee smilie keeps it peaceful, no?

I thought Gordon’s time had run it’s course. We staggered over the line the year before after we’d looked dead and buried and we weren’t really anywhere near good in his final season. I thought it was right that he should go.

Tony Mowbray was a disaster. Not a bad man, not even a bad manager, but overwhelmed by the job.

Neil Lennon’s performance last season was miraculous. I will hear no other word and accept no other word. To have come so close, with a points total that would have won other leagues by a mile, was incredible for a rookie, and when once accepts the pressure he laboured under if there were any justice in the land he would have finished it with a treble … and nearly did.

If we play the way we did in that second half in first halfs we will win the treble this year because we will demoralise teams inside the first half hour to the point we simply crush them.

I do have faith in that. And in the fortitude of our manager. But we NEED to learn to do the basics better.

“Ever present in my mind” :) Luv it. You should write for one of the rags. You’re only on my mind when you’re here same time as me. And i don’t mind that. It’d be boring if it was just Celtic Supporters. But i do appreciate how gentle and ingraciating you’ve been recently. Either because you know you were wrong, or you want to make more pals….or because you need to work more on the undercover hun thing.

Been supporting Celtic for 50+ years – seen the good, the bad and sometimes rotten. These young bhoys are a mixture of; talented, good and better than average players – Lenny’s mission is to get them playing consistently as a TEAM!

To paraphrase Big Jock – I recall him saying something along the lines that if any 8 of the team were playing well for the 90 minutes they could carry the other 3 and still win the game.

The Bhoys need to be playing in their natural positions (where possible) with tactics to suit them. Chop and change – ask them to perform a role they are uncomfortable with and the team performance suffers.

You will get mistakes and indecision coupled with moments of individual skill and collective effort – just like tonight.

Team tactics, players in their correct position and collective team effort and performance will win this title!

    H!H!

  10. Clearly we are now cognisant that RFC are Close To The Edge…our Board have known for a number of years about this and in particular circa 6 years ago they recognised the £100 million valuation on Ibrox and surrounds was folly but never challenged. There was a complacent bragging in that time about how wilful and “dodgy” RFC had become. But no use of the media or otherwise to open this up.

I use this as a small example of when your competitor demonstrates weakness …you pursue an end game. Celtic have never set out to challenge nor take on RFC even when they knew they were clearly out of line? Any other business in the real world would have pursued the kill. Unacceptable that may be for the anti- business people on this site.

So my point is that a compliant Celtic are part of the Scottish infrastructure (SFA/SPL) and now PL is part of that infrastructure ..words fail me but he clearly feels the need to be a part of this and is so out of step with pretty much all of the support.

I sit on the business side of the fence and cant abide/ accept that these guys on our Board are not asking the real questions to effect change …..are these characters ..big though they are in their corporate worlds …Tadpoles when it comes to Dermott ..

So at a time when we should be challenging and taking on our adversaries in their weakest hour we are sitting back saying….In Administration this Friday….

In the real world nobody waits for this to happen …when your competitor is that weak you make it happen….

So why so inactive CFC ….because they always have been….no vision..no strategy…no direction…no leadership.. No belief system!!!

Interesting. Lenny seems to work with the opposite thinking imo (which is what you are saying) -injuries and forced changes aside, i did actually wonder if he was trying to educate some of the young lhads buy giving them a shot at different positions to give them a better understanding of how the game plays out overall – is this fair asssumption? If so, it brings up a lot of other questions regarding the longevity of contracts with our young team. But good to read your post….got me thinking a bit more deeply……fire engines already on the way to this address :)

Re my apparent ‘calming down’, to be perfectly honest with you…I haven’t revisited my opinion of Lawwell in the slightest, if anything the current league position sadly vindicates my concerns. So much so I’ve given up any real hope of winning the league this season, so I’m more sanguine as a result. Hope that answers your other questions?

    1 – Forster is a great keeper

2- Ledley needs to play in centre midfield

3- Our manager is capable of inspiring the players to (big) improvement after half time

4- Stokes is our #1 striker

5- Our away support is fantastic

    As for:

“I don’t agree with James F on everything but I respect his views, as I do with most on CQN”,

so what made you jump into attack Clyde9-1?? James Forrest is perfectly capable of defending himself and it was always inevitable they would resolve their differences themselves ?!?

I’ve noticed you posting frequently that you are behind Lenny and against the PL, absolutely fair enough. So why chuck in the towel in October, with 6 months to play.

Am not attacking you, hope it doesn’t seem that way, but, as you have already admitted, you will be flattered to know, i find you…interesting…:)

  18. CultsBhoy @ 01:00

Aye maybe so. It was conjecture, that maybe Lenny sees this young team as the same team playing in a few years, which would then make sense. It brings up a lot of questions as i said to Praecepta, but as it’s only conjecture on my part at the moment, it’s not worth discussing. Interesting though. In an ideal world it would make sense to me, as in a couple of years, this would be a team of players at their peak, and at their best playing with the team they’ve come to know. Good long term strategy, both for football management, and asset management.

  21. RANGERS Football Club and the Rangers Charity Foundation are delighted to be welcoming to Ibrox around 300 armed services personnel and Erskine veterans in honour of Remembrance Day.

To commemorate the 93rd anniversary of the Armistice, representatives from each of the armed forces and a veteran from Erskine will lay a wreath at the John Greig statue and lead the teams onto the pitch ahead of the meeting with Dundee Utd on November 5.

As a tribute to all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty Rangers players will also wear special poppy strips as a mark of respect on the day.

All those present from the armed forces and from Erskine will have the opportunity to go onto the pitch at half-time where they are sure to receive an amazing welcome from the Rangers support.

Erskine is the Foundation’s Community Charity Partner for this season and the Foundation will aim to promote the work of the charity and raise £20,000 to fund projects centred round Erskine’s Glasgow and Bishopton homes.

Erskine cares for 1,000 young and old ex-Service man and women a year, helping them rebuild shattered lives and providing specialist support.

The Rangers Charity Foundation is also hosting a can collection before kick-off in aid of veterans’ charity Poppyscotland, which supports ex-Servicemen and women and their families.

I back Lenny out of loyalty as he has come to our rescue and has literally put his life on the line for Celtic.

PL in my opinion treats fans like numpties and uses CFC as a personsl cash cow. He has let us down (even by his own admission – re failure to sign Fletcher going on his gravestone)

I’m throwing in the towel because statistically it is too big an ask.

We would need a massive reversal of form by a team of players who I feel lack the character or leadership to do it.

We need to win every game including 3 against Huns.

I acknowledge it is possible but at this stage highly unlikely.

    Off to sleep now!

    …injuries and forced changes aside.

Absolutely no doubt that this has aggrevated the results.

Team format should however, remain the principal – the more you alter the template – the greater the risk of breakdown.

I pose the question (example) – keep Mathews at RB (tonight) and play a natural LB from the NextGen squad and Victor (in holding role) – would we have looked so loose and open at times?

In theory the other 9 outfield players would have been in their natural positions – maybe better team performance and less trauma for us viewing supporters – but like all football matches no guaranteed result.

IMHO – if Lenny gets consistent Team performances out of them then we will win this title!

Yep…we scored only once or twice last season with the heid.

Got a few now this season, so good to see that working. We also defended much better against the high balls tonight, and looked less panicky in defence than last month. Some much needed changes have been identified and implemented. Very much a positive week so far :)
