Hibernian 1-4 Celtic

553

Celtic eventually overcame Hibernian at Easter Road in the Scottish Communities League Cup quarter final tonight but not until they endured a fraught first half.  The game was 3 minutes old when Ivan Sproule gave the home team the lead off an unfortunate Daniel Majstorovic.  A Hibs corner was not defended at the edge of the six yard box and had to be cleared off the line by Adam Matthews at the near post but Sproule fired the clearance into the six hard box where is ricocheted off Majstorovic and into the net.

Celtic struggled to get into the game but after 19 minutes Beram Kayal broke free on the right and crossed for Gary Hooper, who missed the ball with his leading foot and saw it bounce off his left knee and behind.

The best two chances of the first half for Celtic came within four minutes.  Ki and Hooper combined before Kayal released Stokes on 23 minutes but the Irishman’s shot skimmed the outside of the post.

In a move that would have a more productive second half facsimile, Stokes was unmarked at a Ki corner but missed the ball with his head and saw his shoulder contact go wide.

On 33 minutes Sproule ran half the field and cut inside Ki of the edge of the area before shooting over.    Minutes later Sproule released Agogo, who dispossessed Celtic midfielders throughout the first half, but Forrest saved at the big striker’s feet.

Five minutes from half time Leigh Griffiths should have doubled Hibs lead when Celtic’s scourge in recent times, the long forward ball, returned to haunt them.  Griffiths ran unattended from his own half but Fraser Forster did his best gable end impersonation to narrow the angle inside his box and block the shot.

Things soon picked up.

James Forrest underlined his Most Valuable Player status to Celtic a minute after the break.  Ki played a forward pass to Hooper on the edge of the area, which was nipped onto Forrest by the Celtic striker.  Forrest cut inside, dropped the shoulder and shot home from 17 yards.

It was a remarkably simple goal but the strength of shot by Forrest was particularly noteworthy.  Being able to shoot from the edge of the area is a crucial part of a wingers play.

Beram Kayal was booked on 48 minutes for being kicked in the face by Ivan Sproule, who also saw a yellow card.

Forrest got his second, and best, goal on 57 minutes.  He collected a throw-in on the wing, beat two Hibs players, played a one-two with Stokes and finished with a well-placed left foot shot.

Celtic then went into overdrive as Hibernian faltered.  Forrest skinned his marker and crossed but Ki slipped inside the box when the ball broke to him.  A minute later Anthony Stokes make a good connection with a Ki corner to head Celtic’s third goal from the six yard line.

Gary Hooper was having an off evening but he timed his run onto an Adam Matthews long ball, controlled and scored to finish off the scoring.  Ivan Sproule received his second yellow card 20 minutes from time for kicking Mark Wilson as he ran through on goal.  On this occasion his victim escaped punishment.

  1. Good evening.

James Forest has always stuck me as being a sociopathic windbag. Why make a ‘point’ in a short sentence when several paragraphs of fevered giberish will suffice. (Hi JF! Not a 1st time poster btw, as clearly that would render any comment void).

For the record, I am always an optimist when supporting my team and a pessimist with regards to many other aspects in life. Defiant optimism is the essence of supporting Celtic. Grumbling about plc politics is a staple of this site with the wannabe movers and shakers that abound; side issue: football is still played on the pitch for me.

Great 2nd half tonight; unplayable for the last 30 minutes. Start like that and we will horse all.

By the way, noticing a distinct lack of hyperlinks on the new-fangled site. Anyone ‘tape’ the game? Big Je used to be a saviour for that kind of thing.

Also, hello to Fortunes – had a few good late night chats with you when I posted as Thundertim – or Thundercat as you were prone to calling me….

You are a tit. First time poster or not your first comment was a disgrace and the worst gutter garbage I’ve seen posted here in ages.

You make statements like that and you don’t deserve anything less than a gutter response.

Agree in principle, but it was on our right we were being swamped in the 1st half…it could easily have been the left as well, but Hibs were intent on attacking our right back after watching recent games. So imo not the LB or even the RB prob, it was a tactical issue which Lenny sorted out at half-time…somehow.

But do agree in principle with what you’re saying, although i’m also open to the idea of Lenny seeing this as a squad building period which may be fantasy on my part and complete nonsense…but i like the idea, and can see it working. A deeper level than last season.

I expect the reason there are so many poor ex-servicemen relying on charity, will have nothing to do with tax evasion undermining the resources, required to provide for all the treatment and care they could need, without any need for charity.

I might also dismiss the fact that soldiers went into battle without basic protection because the government couldnt afford it. Making cuts becuase tax evasion has become so common.

I expect the irony is lost.

Whyte holds their “support” in the same contempt that we do, eh? It’s just that he’s not Celtic Minded, more Hun-Minded, so is more inclined to resort to any scummy manoeuvre to get more cash out of his wee bigot clientele. Ugly club, ugly people. Difficult to put anything past them these days….anything at all…:(

i read this quote from sam allarcyce (yes, i know)

he said something along the lines of “if they aren’t good enough, get them fit enough”.

    thats what we need.

    right now.

  13. Going to say this now so I can’t be accused of double standards or revisionism in the future but….cue drum roll, tin hat on ;

I don’t rate James Forrest. The player not our JF by the way.

He obviously has undoubted talent, some of which was on display tonight but more often than not I feel as if there a bandwagon building up pace and I’ve been left behind.

Is it just me? I’ll get all the easy answers out the way first.

He’s only 20…True. I hate how we never give our youth players sustained runs in the first team even when they are playing garbage. It’ll do them no good in the long run, dropping them as soon as they go off the boil so I can’t be hypocritical here.Give him time.

He has pace to burn….Why doesn’t he use it then? How many times has he skinned a full back first time off asking, never to be repeated again?

Can shoot. If I hadn’t seen his first goal tonight with my own eyes I wouldn’t have believed it possible for him to strike a ball as well as he did. The ‘sclaff’ seems to be his default shot.

I don’t want to rain on his parade tonight because he did play well but you have to admit he has largely been given the benefit of the doubt when he has played poorly and made mistakes.

Which is would be great if everybody else in the team was afforded the free pass to criticism that he has.

If Samaras had been blown over by the wind and chased the ref to complain whilst ignoring the ball 3 feet away from him there would be a lynch mob outside Celtic Park demanding he be deported back to Greece.

Basically I think he is an OK player capable of better but in danger of being heralded as some sort of Messi figure. I think McGeady went through the ‘do no wrong’ stage aswell which is natural as he is one of our own but that quickly evaporated and progressed into the ‘no end product’ era.

So if you think wee James is the bee’s knee’s then good, give him your support. I will ‘cos he’ll need it when the bandwagon wheels eventually do come off.

But that won’t matter to you, cause on your side of the screen throw around insults at other posters with the impunity of annonymity.

Your posts are formulaic – and that’s not taking anything away from them. Often they are excellent and crucial for debate. But formulaic in that your initial posts after a game are aggressive…(and tonight we won?)…then you eventually calm down and those that have stuck it out with you become your pals while others may have been scared away and never come back again.

If someone made that comment in the pub it would be taken as a joke because that, presumably, is how it would have been meant, except in the case of someone trying to provoke a response.

His comment was NOT a joke. He was being a cheeky barsteward and he provoked exactly the response he should have expected with a remark like that.

You noticed, then, that I tend to respond well to people who treat others opinions with respect? Which is why I will treat your response in the same way. But do not defend his remark by making him out to be a saint. If he’s going to throw around words like that he should be prepared for a response in proportion to – and in the context of – those words.

If you can’t see I was being ironical I am surprised. Too many people on this site throw around insults like confetti these days.

  23. James Forrest is Lennon on

    saskatim:

A little better. And to you. Listen, that remark of yours was uncalled for, okay? We should be able to treat each other with respect in this place. I responded in an ironical manner, as a reflection of what you suggested in your post.

Believe it or not, I do not value my posts any more important than yours or my opinion as any more important than yours or my contribution as any more important than yours. I never have, and I never will.

What makes this site the best – BY FAR – of all the Celtic sites is the way in which it has ALWAYS been a place for debate, proper debate, as opposed to mindless insults. It has always been better than that, but lately we have fans throwing all manner of offensive insults and innuendos around … and yes, I realise there ARE people here who’s mission is to stir trouble.

But we KNOW who those people are, and for the rest, it would be good if agree or disagree we all showed a little more respect.

And yes, I include myself in that group. Earlier tonight I made a joke, a JOKE, because I had been accused of having “slavish followers” , and when I was challenged by one poster on my response to another I made a remark about him no longer being a slavish follower, and a guy who SHOULD know me better than that took that remark in earnest and I found myself on the defensive AGAIN …

That’s what this site is turning into, and I despair of it on nights like tonight.

  24. Guys

Take a wee minute and have a think.

JF was not being arrogant, he was making a joke.

Saskatim, JF does write a long post now and again, but you were quite cheeky.

I would have loved it if JF had just laughed like the rest of us.

JF, you are in charge of your own emotions, no one can make you do anything.

  25. James Forrest

Urgh, it’s too easy for it to get messy. And yes i see it looks like you’ve been singled out for attack tonight. If i might be so bold, better dealt with graciously. Take the insults on board, respond in kind, and move on. You’re a passionate individual, and have retained it after from what i’ve gathered by what you’ve said more than a few years in passion-killing work.

Keep it calm online. And treat every post with a bit of humour. Granted the hun at their evil best at the moment, but most on here are not huns.

Don’t get me wrong, i’ve got many faults that i probably don’t even see; but you are a valuable contributor and can offer a lot more if you temper your passion, and unleash it at the right time.

We’re all a little bit nippy these days … this is going to be a long, testing season.

It might also be the best one we’ve had in many, many, many, many years. This is why this site HAS to stay a forum for the debates which need to be had. If Rangers really are about to go belly up – and I think that’s as now as near as certain – we are going to face pressure the likes of which we have never seen before … from the SFA, the SPL, from the Scottish goverment, from our own club maybe even.

This site HAS to stay a focus for proper, intelligent debate. Because, frankly, this is the best place for that debate. We have the sharpest minds amongst the support here, real vision, real passion and real leadership. We have guys here I would trust with my life, and I mean it literally. I would actually place my life in the hands of some of these guys.

I am proud of my association with this site. Always have been. Even when I stropped off last year for a while.

The pressure we’re all going to be under will be RELENTLESS. The enemy will try to divide us in every way it can. We can make that job next to impossible if we respect each other. We don’t have to agree for us to be united.
