Hibernian 1-4 Celtic

553

Celtic eventually overcame Hibernian at Easter Road in the Scottish Communities League Cup quarter final tonight but not until they endured a fraught first half.  The game was 3 minutes old when Ivan Sproule gave the home team the lead off an unfortunate Daniel Majstorovic.  A Hibs corner was not defended at the edge of the six yard box and had to be cleared off the line by Adam Matthews at the near post but Sproule fired the clearance into the six hard box where is ricocheted off Majstorovic and into the net.

Celtic struggled to get into the game but after 19 minutes Beram Kayal broke free on the right and crossed for Gary Hooper, who missed the ball with his leading foot and saw it bounce off his left knee and behind.

The best two chances of the first half for Celtic came within four minutes.  Ki and Hooper combined before Kayal released Stokes on 23 minutes but the Irishman’s shot skimmed the outside of the post.

In a move that would have a more productive second half facsimile, Stokes was unmarked at a Ki corner but missed the ball with his head and saw his shoulder contact go wide.

On 33 minutes Sproule ran half the field and cut inside Ki of the edge of the area before shooting over.    Minutes later Sproule released Agogo, who dispossessed Celtic midfielders throughout the first half, but Forrest saved at the big striker’s feet.

Five minutes from half time Leigh Griffiths should have doubled Hibs lead when Celtic’s scourge in recent times, the long forward ball, returned to haunt them.  Griffiths ran unattended from his own half but Fraser Forster did his best gable end impersonation to narrow the angle inside his box and block the shot.

Things soon picked up.

James Forrest underlined his Most Valuable Player status to Celtic a minute after the break.  Ki played a forward pass to Hooper on the edge of the area, which was nipped onto Forrest by the Celtic striker.  Forrest cut inside, dropped the shoulder and shot home from 17 yards.

It was a remarkably simple goal but the strength of shot by Forrest was particularly noteworthy.  Being able to shoot from the edge of the area is a crucial part of a wingers play.

Beram Kayal was booked on 48 minutes for being kicked in the face by Ivan Sproule, who also saw a yellow card.

Forrest got his second, and best, goal on 57 minutes.  He collected a throw-in on the wing, beat two Hibs players, played a one-two with Stokes and finished with a well-placed left foot shot.

Celtic then went into overdrive as Hibernian faltered.  Forrest skinned his marker and crossed but Ki slipped inside the box when the ball broke to him.  A minute later Anthony Stokes make a good connection with a Ki corner to head Celtic’s third goal from the six yard line.

Gary Hooper was having an off evening but he timed his run onto an Adam Matthews long ball, controlled and scored to finish off the scoring.  Ivan Sproule received his second yellow card 20 minutes from time for kicking Mark Wilson as he ran through on goal.  On this occasion his victim escaped punishment.

Think you’re the one who needs to catch himself on, mate. I’ve never called for the sacking of Neil Lennon. Never will.

It would be a pretty dull blog if all we did is act as constant cheerleaders. Leave that to Rangers forums, who dish out bans at the slightest hint of dissent.

  3. Re: the Moira Gordon article. When looking for bias, the best test is to ask yourself “If it was Rangers would the journalist write the same article?”. So, the scenario is Rangers have lost an unlucky goal from a corner and then scored 4 goals to win 4 – 1. Would the content and tone of that article be the same? Would it ****!

We do have defensive frailties (although I think lack of cover from midfield brings Mastjorovic and co more criticism than they deserve) but that article is ridiculoulsy negative considering we won the game 4 -1, and the goal we lost was just unlucky.

Just read back on last nights, err, disagreements.

I am probably older than most of the posters on here, who were anything but happy with all things Celtic last night (and this morning) .

I am obviously guessing that this is the case.

Which brings me nicely on to the point I am going to make.

I know the defence in first half was iffy last night, however, we could also have scored 2 or 3 if we had taken our chances in the same period.

We were a different side in the second half and played some superb football coupled with some great individual performances.

I know we have a long list of injuries.

I know some have issues with the management team.

I know some have issues with some of the players.

I know some have issues with the board.

I wonder what you would have thought of the Celtic sides I supported in the fifties and early sixties, apart from a few obvious pearls.

Really ghuys, we aint as bad as you make out. Trust me!

    Happy days comin’ up!

You think Hooper has pace? Really? His wee legs might go like the clappers, but he doesn’t cover much ground. Stokes is the same. The only striker we have with any pace is Sammi, who is also the only one who can make a chance for himself from unpromising positions. Maybe Bangura has some speed, but he hasn’t shown a great deal else.

Agree that Matthews did very well to recover a yard on Griffiths in the 2nd half. Pleased to see it.

Also pleasing was seeing Forrest run away from Sproule. It may be that Sproule has lost a little pace as he’s filled out, but he is still a nippy bugger.

Overall though, outside of Sammi and Forrest, we don’t have anyone who can run away from an opponent in any area of the pitch. Even our ‘wingers’ Commons and McCourt, are from the John Roberston school.

  14. Social network sites may be changing people’s brains as well as their social life, research suggests.

Brain scans show a direct link between the number of Facebook friends a person has and the size of certain parts of their brain.

It’s not clear whether using social networks boosts grey matter or if those with certain brain structures are good at making friends, say researchers.

“We have found some interesting brain regions that seem to link to the number of friends we have – both ‘real’ and ‘virtual’,” said Dr Ryota Kanai, one of the researchers from University College London.

“The exciting question now is whether these structures change over time. This will help us answer the question of whether the internet is changing our brains.”

One region involved is the amygdala, which is associated with memory and emotional responses.

Previous research has shown a link between the volume of grey matter in the amygdala and the size and complexity of real world social networks. Grey matter is the brain tissue where mental processing takes place.

Three other areas of the brain were linked with the size of someone’s online social network but not their tally of real-world friends.

The regions involved have roles in social interaction, memory and autism. The work, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B Biological Sciences, also looked at 3-D brain scans of 125 CQNers and found that mineshafters would be best placed on police ‘watch lists’ while happy clappers were considered docile, albeit annoying.

greenjedi – you can expect individual players to “switch off” at times during games, but the coaches can clearly see whether there’s enough cover for an opposition break up the park.

Hibs were 4 on 2 at one point during the first half FFS!

I could understand if it was 1-0 with 5 minutes to go and we were desperately chasing the game, but it was still the first 45!

I reckon Hooper would beat Sammy over 10 to 20 yards every time, hence the reason he scores goals. Sammy over 30 or 40 or more.

  17. Celtic have been boosted by the news that Sierra Leone international forward Mohamed Bangura will not be a long-term injury loss.

Bangura missed Saturday’s SPL match against Aberdeen and Celtic’s 4-1 win against Hibernian on Wednesday evening with a knee injury. Coaching staff at Celtic had feared the problem could have required surgery, ruling the player out until January.

After visiting a specialist on Wednesday, however, the summer signing from AIK has been told that he will not need to go under the knife and could return to first team action soon.

Neil Lennon said he hoped to be able to consider the player for selection by early November.

“There is good news on Bangura which is a bonus,” he revealed. “Hopefully he will only be out for a couple of weeks.

“The specialist didn’t think he required surgery so he has been put on a programme for the next couple of weeks and hopefully that will settle things down.”

The Celtic manager also said that Kris Commons and Georgios Samaras were nearing full fitness, further expanding his attacking options.

Problems remain in defence though, with Charlie Mulgrew and Glenn Loovens both ruled out of the match at Easter Road with ankle and hamstring injuries respectively.

  26. Philvis, you may not be alone with that Lottery backup plan!

It seems many public sector workers may have to rely on the similar dumb luck.

You’ve probably guessed that the reason I asked about your own pension provision was not sheer nosey-ness, but rather to understand better your remarks about those public sector workers who are in line to benefitt from being in final salary defined benefits pension schemes (funded or not). (Though many other, non-publicly funded pension scheme members are fast finding themselves in the same boat.)

In your own chosen profession (I’m assuming you are in a profession), there are presumably norms around benefits, compensation and reward. Maybe some of those longer-term benefits (or your ability to to have options in this respect) contributed to your own choice of career.

Those same factors will have contributed towards many public sector workers’ choice of career.

Should you and your professional peers be informed (i.e. no consultation, let alone negotiation) many years after emarking on your career that you now have to work longer and pay more for less of your deferred income in retirement, I’m sure you would be justifiably furious. Just as you would be if your SIPP manager informed you, many years into your plan, that the plan’s projections were wildly inaccurate and you now have to take some drastic last-minute measures to obtain anything like the standard of living you had been led to believe you could expect.
