Horrible damage inflicted by requisitioners

641

The actions of the Sevco Requisitioners in undermining Newco Rangers made no sense.   They invoked an almighty schism, one which will forevermore deny the emerging club from a potentially rich seam of support.  An act of such potential vandalism would surely not be undertaken unless they had a plan to deliver the necessary votes?

Turns out they didn’t have a plan after all.  Some Oldco Rangers fans put their money on the table but their face didn’t fit.  As a consequence, another group of Oldco Rangers fans overtly and covertly campaigned against them, but refused to put cash on the table.

Say what you like about the Easdales, they paid their money fair and square (and any debts to society, for those who like to go digging in the past).  The embryonic club will develop in their image, it will stand or fall on their judgement.  After coughing up, they endured incredibly manipulative pressures.  They don’t strike me as natural underdogs but on this occasion they were.  They resisted and I’m pleased for them.  If you want to buy a club, walk in the front door with your cash, don’t try to drive the price down by trashing the club and invoking an insurrection.

Paul Murray deserves a special mention in this whole process.  When Charles Green was pulling a deal together to buy the liquidated assets of Rangers, Murray campaigned against him, and all others who were prepared to put money on the table.  As a consequence, Green was up against it from day one.

Instead of addressing Rangers fans as the man who ensured football would continue at Ibrox, Charlie was painted as a pantomime villain.  Without this act of vandalism, he would have been able to sell 30,000 season tickets at full price.  He could also have chased everyone earning over £50k per annum off the premises, ensuring Newco launched profitably, with a strong fan base.

Today, Newco would have money in the bank and be laying the foundations necessary for top flight football.  No ‘legend’ would have been able to hold them to ransom in return for £800k p.a.  Instead, Green, with £5.5m and untold more from his consortium in the game, was put in a horrible situation.  As a consequence, he overpromised and under-delivered.

Having done all this, Murray turned on the Easdales, still without the money to get the job done.  It is utterly unfathomable.

I’m in danger of being disowned by my fellow Ayrshiremen.

Nearly forty hours since my last swally and another thirty-odd till my next.

    This could ruin my reputation!

How I’m going to enjoy reading about their AGM whilst sober,I don’t know. If ever an event was crying out for a wee celebratory glass or ten, this must shooooorly be it.

Once it’s over,we can concentrate on the big picture.

But one thing is for sure….

    Period.

It would be interesting if the monumental historical question and debate about Scottish Independence was a little more than the emotive notions of Divide & Rule within the media blogs and comment pages populated by trolls.

Why not an issue of celebrity democracy versus a Constitutional Republic? Why not a discussion about civil rights over banker rights? Maybe ecause people are scared versus comfortable, insecure versus secure?

The media sounbites of Thursdays Annual Gurning Mellee will speak volumes about the State of Scottish Civil Society… No different from the rest of the ‘developed’ world. 3. EIDUR GUDJOHNSEN has played at the top level in Holland, England, Spain and France.

And the latest Icelandic export says the former Barcelona ace is the man EVERY player from his country aims to emulate.

Holmbert Fridjonsson can’t kick a ball for Celtic until January 1 following his £150,000 move from Fram Reykjavik.

But the 20-year-old is desperate to kick-off his quest to become as big a star as his boyhood hero.

He said: “I don’t know Eidur well but he is a legend back home — the best Icelandic footballer there’s ever been.

“He was my hero when I was younger because of what he achieved in his career after leaving the country. He was the first Icelandic player who really established himself in Europe.

“A lot of Icelandic players are now doing great in Europe — but he was the first and is the one we all try to emulate when we leave.

“Even in the short space of time I’ve been in Scotland, I’ve seen it’s a big difference from Iceland.

“I realise it will take me time to settle because there’s a huge difference between the level I was at and a club like Celtic.

“In Iceland I wasn’t a professional but now I am and I’ll need time to adjust.

“Since coming here I’m training every day and sometimes twice a day. The tempo is a lot higher than I was used to.

“I haven’t played for a few months because the Icelandic season ended in September but I have been training hard.

“It will take a little while to get my match fitness up but hopefully I’ll be ready to hit the ground running when I’m registered in January.

“It’s my aim to get into the first team — it might take time but that’s my plan.

“I’ve spoken to the manager and I know he has faith in me. He’s given me confidence, which is good.”

Iceland Under-21 international Fridjonsson knows that recent Celtic striker signings have taken time to settle.

Neither Teemu Pukki nor Amido Balde have yet justified their big transfer fees.

But the youngster is hopeful his relatively modest price will help him slip under the radar.

He said: “I’m a striker and I am paid to score goals. That’s my aim.

“I already have set myself targets about what I expect for this season — but I’d prefer to keep them private.

“I’ve seen the other strikers in training and they’re good players. Some of them have just been unlucky at the club.

“Sometimes it takes time to settle in a new place and people don’t see the best of them right away. But it will come down to me. I’m the one who has to deliver on the pitch. I believe in myself and hopefully I can show why in January.

“Hopefully, it will help that I didn’t come with a big transfer fee and there isn’t as much expectation.”

The fresh-faced frontman took a bow before the Celtic Park faithful before last weekend’s 1-0 win against Hibs.

And admits he was nervous just SPEAKING in front of a crowd of more than 46,000.

He laughed: “In Iceland I played in the front of crowds of 1,500.

“It’s a big difference but that’s one of the things I’m excited about.

“Last Saturday I was introduced to the crowd and I was pretty nervous when speaking to them.”

While he has yet to kick a ball for Celtic, Fridjonsson has already been recognised in his new home city.

He said: “I’ve already had a few fans say hello to me, which is nice.

“At the club, everything has been fine. All the players are willing to help and I get a lift to training from Nir Biton. He’s a young guy, he’s new to the club and trying to settle, same as me.

“The matches have been enjoyable. I saw the Motherwell game we won 5-0. It was a really great game, with a lot of good football and good goals.

“It looks like an exciting team for a striker to play for because there were a lot of crosses and balls going into the box. Hopefully that will be really good for me.

“I enjoyed being in the dressing room at Fram and I like a laugh but I haven’t done anything here yet and no one’s played any tricks on me — they’ve been kind so far.

“But I can see that Scott Brown is the big joker at the club.

“I know Celtic fans won’t know much about me but I’m good in the air and I hold up the ball well.

“I can give the team a target to push forward and I’m also very good when I’m in and around the box.

“I will create for the team but hopefully I will score goals as well.”

  5. Celtic boss Neil Lennon has begun his search for new recruits by flying to Holland to run the rule over strike pair Aron Johannsson and Alfred Finnbogason.

And the Parkhead boss will have departed with positive impressions of American international Johannsson in particular after watching him score two goals for Dutch side AZ in Wednesday night’s Amstel Cup victory over Finnbogason’s Heerenveen.

With Lennon planning a rebuilding job on his squad after a disappointing Champions League campaign, he is actively seeking new arrivals in the New Year window.

Impressive audition: American forward Aron Johannsson (right) scored twice in front of Neil Lennon

During Wednesday’s spying mission, he saw 23-year-old Johannsson score in normal and extra time in a 2-2 draw before his team triumphed on penalties in the last-16 cup tie.

Iceland international Finnbogason, 24, was linked with a £5million switch to Glasgow in the summer, while Johannsson – who also has an Icelandic background but has made six appearances for Jurgen Klinsmann’s USA side – has also been linked with the Scottish champions.

While Lennon surveys potential incomers – with a striker and midfielder among his priority positions – there could also be movement out of Parkhead soon.

Off target: Alfred Finnbogason shoots past Zwolle goalkeeper Diederik Boer but misses the goal

On the radar: Finnbogason first aroused interest in Glasgow in the summer

Both Joe Ledley and Georgios Samaras are looking increasingly likely to leave, with Lazio declaring an interest in the Greek international.

Samaras is out of contract in the summer and appears certain to be on his way out after six years in Glasgow.

Like Ledley, the 28-year-old has been asked to take a pay cut to remain, and both Toronto FC and Hull City have been linked with a move for the former Manchester City player.

But the Italians have become the first club to make public their interest.

On their way out? Georgios Samaras (left) and Joe Ledley (right) could be set to leave Celtic

It is believed they had him watched during Celtic’s 6-1 defeat in Barcelona this month, but that European humbling and Samaras’ poor performance has not put them off.

Sporting director Igor Tare said: ‘Samaras is a footballer I really like personally. We were previously interested in him four years ago if I remember correctly, but nothing happened. Next week we will sit down with our manager, Vladimir Petkovic, to determine our movements in the transfer market.’

Lazio currently lie mid-table in Serie A but are still in the Europa League and facie a winnable tie in the next round against Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets. Samaras would be the first Greek to play for them if he were to agree to a move and could team up with German striker Miroslav Klose at the Olympic stadium

I am a bit puzzled by our hero being compared to Wilkins Micawber. I don’t see Craigy boy as someone waiting for something to turn up. Rather I see him as someone who makes things happen.

Like Micawber I suppose in that he will always spend more money than he makes but unlike him Craigy boy doesn’t go to jail for spending his creditor’s money, or failing to meet their demands as with Ticketus.

    He goes to Monaco instead.

  19. Good morning all, don’t post much but do lurk on the site an unhealthy amount of time. For the record there is a real danger to me that the foreseen domination domestically could result in some of our fans especially the younger one’s thinking they just have to turn up and we win the league and that’s it. I grew up during rfc’s (rip possibly not today though he he) tainted 9 and despite me witnessing the uneven balance (understatement of the year award) I grew up learning how to deal with defeat. I learned to savour all moments of joy because I knew just hard it was to achieve and what we had to overcome. Older fans like my dad talked about the history but even having experienced times like Lisbon and regular euro semis and quarters our own beautiful 9 they still didn’t expect continuous victory just because. Every game had to be won. Battering a team from the first minute was the shout then have a wee break and go for it towards the end of the first half. Repeat process for second half. I so wish this was our style now no matter who the opposition is but the key is that competition is respected and up on until now we have seemed to educate our supporters that when we did win and deserved to win it was with style and those moments with style are the moments as a supporter to live for. In stark contrast at the nonDom school I went to the rfc supporters during their bought nine titles the arrogance that grew was hortific, I regularly pointed out the lack of style but no, all that matter to them was feeling they were better than us. It moulded how these around me grew as people, it was pretty ugly even the reasonable non bigoted folk were arrogants and falsely felt elite. Obviously now they’ll have hopefully had a lesson in life with all things sevconian but essentially they expected to win, they believed it was their right and from this they believed ignorantly they were better people for it. Now I know the expected high moral values of the majority of our supporters and our great ways of sharing the old stories and the humble way we educate each other politely (not so much recently I would add!) as well the powerful ability to laugh at ourselves but is there a real danger that with perceived potential domination some of the younger (or older)supporters might get a little arrogant or worse a lot arrogant and fail to respect the Aberdeens and Dundee Utds or any other team? Is this the mind set of the young team? Are they becoming too arrogant ? I’m not saying I want a run of succesives defeats here to teach them a lesson but have the messages of basic grace been lost. Is there a danger in these modern times some of our supporters end up so arrogant, I bloomin’ well hope not. Enjoy good times and success yes yes yes, but play with style and behave with style, that’s the team for me. HH

Ps does anyone have the quote from the sect bill regarding the perceived attendance maybe at a football match bla bla it was posted a couple days ago. Thanks.
