How Stein managed big game weeks

1113

I asked Archie Macpherson to speak about Jock Stein at CQN11, to mark the 50th anniversary of Jock’s appointment as Celtic manager, and then stayed quiet as he spoke.  One of the points he made was that Jock would have a news plan ahead of a big game.

Good news would be held back until a few days before the game, giving fans and players a lift, to ensure maximum impact.  Bad news could break at any time, but it would have to fight for column inches.  As an operator, he is still worth studying.  Celtic should plan to dominate this week’s news accordingly.

Apart from that horrible game away to Legia, Ronny Deila has not been to a sell-out Celtic game in a large stadium, and even that was only 30,000.  It’s possible he’s never even played before a large sell-out crowd, so you can be sure he’ll not be short of people telling him what to expect, and how to prepare for Hampden on Sunday.

There are some obvious pitfalls for him to avoid, in particular to ensure his players are not provoked into retaliation, but taking too much advice would be a mistake (will not stop us offering plenty advice).  He’s spent all season playing and preparing one way, anything which gets in the way of this will only put him off his game.  The manager needs to employ a filter this week, tell everyone he’s got the situation covered and get on with the game.

Loving the way recipients of Rangers EBT loans have been asked about an advert dealing with the consequences of their loans, but are not actually asked about the loans themselves. These guys only agree speak on the understanding they are not asked about their loans, none of which are or will be repaid.

I accept that if the loan recipient is being asked about yesterday’s charity match, or some other football game, there’s no place to ask him about his loan, but these guys are regularly commenting on the consequences of their loans, without ever having to deal with the awkward question.

  1. There are now only 51 Inter Milan seats left in the upper tier. And 1 (one) in the lower ;-)

  2. Just read Phils piece and surely sevco will be ok for payroll this month with the league cup semi ticket money in their bank account

I am surprised that more players like KC, don’t have a go from distance, when they set up 6 & 4, mind you thats how we beat the Catalans right.

He was predicting good times ahead for Thems, aided and abetted by Glib and shameless the Three Bears and those 500,000,000 fans. With the latter being milked ……..oops, meant buying shares in the club on it’s way out………..

That’d bring a new meaning to the Three Bears……….all holding share certificates in Rangers Then, Rangers Now and Rangers Future

I have watched the Sevco keeper a few times this season and he holds nothing. I’m hoping KC batters shots at that goalie from the first minute.

Sorry PJ not calling you a “B”, hit the post button by mistake.

Not having a pop at goal is frustrating, it really bugs me when a player in a reasonable position to shoot, opts to try a pass or beat a man…….

    SFA

The SFA have caved into the demands of Mike Ashley and will stage tomorrow’s hearing into the Sports Direct chief’s growing control of Sevco by conference call.

Stupid headline from a Celtic Blog I quite like.To say the SFA are in a climbdown is ridiculous. Most of the worlds business is now done by conference calls.I myself have been involved in quite a few.To imagine MA and his legal team have nothing else to do but be at Hampden is ridiculous.I like this blog, but you dont have to make up things,to denigrate a ruling body, who have not ruled yet.Wait until the outcome.

  14. Cheers again guys for all the help. Signing off for the night now as my shift has finished….amazing how quick time goes when your not doing any work and just looking at CQN.

  20. Can I join a clique, it’s awfy lonely in my wee corner – wats the application/membership criteria?

Am absolutely astonished ( not really ) that there has been no forensic analysis of the statement, and the issues it raises re the governance of our game, by the main stream meeja. The tired/old hackneyed response just goes to show that investigative journalism in this country is dead – ” this statement is provocative in its timing” ” this statement is divisive ” – Jesus H Christ is this the best response they can come up with. If as WC suggests, that the statement is the first salvo – great, because for the good of the game in this country, the truth is always worth pursuing.

Well done Bhoys for all your efforts – and for SFTB’s great post which countered all the negative arguments before the statement was even published – spooky ;-))

We will be in the League Cup Final after Sunday of that i have no doubt – whether it be 3-0 or 6-1 – it doesn’t matter, our opponents on the day will be disposed of easily – Celtic just have too much class ( they better or you’ll look like an ahole…..ed!! )

For all of you going to support the team on Sunday, enjoy & keep safe ;-))

  21. The Times (not the Comic one printed in Glasgow)….says police braced for violence after Celtic fans bait rivals…..9 policemen were injured during an attack at the ROWALLAN bar in THORNLIEBANK after celtic beat rangers 3-0 in Feb. 2011……..300 arrests after the match…….March 2012 police dealt with 119 domestic violent cases……….wonder what the stats will be this time……the celtic fans were too busy celebrating to get involved……same again please

  22. Just before I sign off,I would like to remind those of a weak heart, that we have witnessed this Hun team being taken apart by Hearts, twice,Hibs twice,QOTS,and be outplayed in most of their games, eventually winning because their part time opponents tired near the end.

This is not a one season thing. They have toiled against teams in the 3rd,and 2nd divisions. The last horror show for them was Alloa.Ateam of part timers ran them ragged with passing and move..They had no answer. The majority of wins for the Huns have been,1-0,2-1 against part timers. Some, are saying we should be wary.
